    The ending with you asking about your shirt was awesome lol. It shows how you are just "one of us." Idk, I think the more you show how ordinary you are, the more attainable a "good boy" dog is for the rest of us. I have been working with my Great Dane for several months. When I got him, he was scared to even eat out of a dog dish. He has come a long way and has a long way to go, but it feels doable when I watch these videos.

    Spot on. These devices are excellent and offer an (almost) instant solution to lead issues. My young GSP wants to do everything at 100 miles per hour. He was a horror on the lead. On the first two occasions he tried to get it off, but he soon came to associate it with having fun.
    He now walks to the park to play with his ball very well. No pulling.

    Got a gentle leader a week ago. "Conditioned" my 9 month old 42 pound chocolate lab at home with wearing it for a few minutes a few times a day and giving treats. Walked around a few times in the house.. walked around a few times in the back yard. My 'sled dog' went from sled dog pulling, to loose leash walking in one walk session around the neighbohood. She does constantly try and rub her face in the snow to take it off, but other than that it's been AMAZING.

    Here's my comment for the algorithm without stating anything specific about my dog because I'm so tired of people in the comments of dog training videos trying to tell me how to train my dog without ever seeing him. That said, *thank you* for always mentioning that you wouldn't use the same approach with different dogs when you give a demonstration.
    I never had trouble teaching my dog not to pull on the leash, but your loose leash method was also a great tool in teaching him to ask me for a permission before crossing a street. I don't have to give him a verbal "stop!" anymore!

My dog goes from being slightly in front with a few pulls to walking right beside me and no pulling after only one self correction. Best thing ever made.
    Decided to add that I also got a gentle leader for my brother's new husky pup, (7 months) and she went from pulling like he was a sled to walking beside with a few pulls here and there. My brother couldn't be happier.

I have a five year old aussie and we just introduced a puppy into the mix (same breed) and she has shown signs of guarding. For the most part, I just discourage the behavior when I see it with the shock method. But lately I’ve been taking the toy from the puppy and giving it to the older dog to show her that her bad behavior isn’t going to get her anywhere, in fact, quite the opposite. Is this a bad idea? Will this create a problem between the 2 of them in the long run?

    When I see people walking dogs around my suburb, quite often they avoid crossing paths on the sidewalk because of reactivity. The ones that do meet on leash is pretty much a toin coss if it turns into a huge lunge, bite, jump, release of energy, etc. If i have a young dog on leash, will they learn to become reactive on leash if surrounded by lots of other dogs reactive on leash? Or am I best to continue to "cross paths" let them smell on loose leash - but prepared to correct my dog, or save my dog by pulling it away from the aggressive dog? This turns what should be, normal relaxing family walks into a more stressful experience, even if I am exuding a calm + confident demeanor with my dog. Thanks for any replies =)

    My dog is a chihuahua with a short face so there isn't any gentle leader her size, and she sniffs the ground like crazy. I can't seem to get her attention when we're outside. What should I do? Also, I'm afraid the normal collar would hurt her fragile throat.

    My parents have a lab mix that pulls like crazy. She has a gentle lead, but she's absolutely anal about spending the entire walk trying to rip it off her face. It's such a shame that my parents won't commit to REALLY leash training her - she walks so much better on the gentle lead, but it's "such a hassle" for them to use. -.- 'Not my circus, not my monkey', but I would really love to be able to walk her when I visit my parents 😔

    Should I use a gentle leader on s super reactive 15 month old chihuahua/ pit bull terrier mix 11 pounds .
    She’s very small . I’ve tried a bunch of different collars / harnesses ! Still dealing with leash reactivity and being a maniac when she sees people or dogs on the street 75% of the time
    I’m at my wits end

    • @gwengayhart4505

      Try it. It probably won’t fix the reactivity (especially if it’s at that level), you might want to also try 5 min “training walks” inside the house where you make it clear how you expect her to act without the distractions of other dogs & people. Also, make sure to follow Joel’s advice on making sure your dog is “with you” before you even open the door to walk. Put them on leader. Open door. If they start walking through the door, stand your ground, lead them back in. Shut the door and start over. Repeat until the dog no longer starts walking with the door wide open. Then go outside. Walk a few steps. As soon as the dog starts to get out in front of you, stop. Go back inside & close the door. Start again. They have to know you mean business and aren’t going to let them get away with ignoring you, ever. No oh but she needs a walk! Or “oh that’s confusing to her.” It most certainly isn’t, it’s actually sending a VERY clear message. And that method is EXCELLENT training, engages their brain and body, even if they don’t get a full walk for days or more til they get it. Think of it like a doggie video game: you can’t go to the next level til you win this one. When your dog waits for you to go out the door, she didn’t win the entire game (or earn a whole walk). She just won one level (or a few more steps). If your dog is not “with you,” watching, checking, stopping when you stop, turning when you turn, etc, that dog will not be “with you” or listen in the face of distractions like people and other dogs.

    Joel, has anyone ever asked about grabbing a dog's cheek to get its attention and correct it? Someone told me that that is what a mother dog does, & that a dog remembers its mother correcting it that way, & the dog readily submits. (Unless it's learned to be mean & aggressive - not including that dog in this question.) Have you ever done that? What do you think about it?
    I did have an Old English Sheepdog from puppyhood for 14 years, and I corrected him that way less than a handful of times in his youth. He accepted my correction, I never hurt him but he couldn't get away from me, and he became that special dog in your life that obeyed commands immediately without a leash, treats or anything. He just lived to please & was my shadow. He was awesome.

      A Dam or any acquainted older dog with a puppy will often bare teeth as a forewarning, and grab the scruff(loose skin) or will air snap next to a puppies face, at worst they'll face snap + get on top of a puppy going for scruff until the puppy submits or calms down being very loud and threatening. Dogs do not actually like excitement in a household regularly, it makes it very hard to predict things or get a read on what's happening, that why excited dogs and puppies often get attacked by other dogs. Dogs expect certain manners just like people and will call each other out for being rude or disrespectful from a experienced dog owner and past breeder of multiple species.

    my hungarian mudi (a tall one for the breed), 16 mo neutered male, is a very friendly, I would say well socialized, have multiple best dog friends, but fence reactive (from the inside if our yard) & insaaanely reactive to a german shephard (3-4 yo) a few houses down, we can't even go that direction anymore coz they both go bonkers, mine whines & barks & growls all the same time & despite his small/mid frame, pulls like a big dog 😩 so after observing your videos, gaining confidence, I bought a gentle leader.. my dog walks like a dream in it, but there, at the gsd fence.. the gentle leader cut into his skin from him "correcting himself" repeatedly :/// I lost all hope, is there a situation that we should just let go, like this?

    • @UNDERDOGMMA
      @UNDERDOGMMA Год назад +1

      The main thing to remember is that corrections go to the side, not backward. Joel will get a dog conditioned on a gentle leader in minutes, then the dog just checks in and looks at where he is going the whole time. So essentially, if you use it properly, it’s like it’s not even there. If the dog is not trained properly and the owner just yanks at the out of control dog, it won’t be great.

      Our border collie doesn’t seem to mind. Our heeler isn’t fond of it, but I don’t really care. He won’t get a walk otherwise. I’ve found if I just keep walking, it keeps their brains busy (so necessary for the herders), but you might try doing short training “walks” in the house - like 5 min at a time - with the leader. Usually easier without the distractions.

    • @gwengayhart4505
      @gwengayhart4505 10 месяцев назад

      Also, they’re not designed to be restrictive to the dog’s panting or anything. They’re just meant so you have better control and the dog learns from natural consequences what they don’t want to happen (where the head goes, the body will follow).

    I think I may have introduced the gentle leader too early (3 months) as my puppy could care less about his head turning. It definitely makes walks easier and alleviates pain for me when he hits the end of the leash, but conditioning staying close and not doing that is terrible. He could care less if he has to stay near me to go anywhere he is so scent focused and throws tantrums if I try to get him to stop (with how young he is idk if thats okay to restrict yet either) He is only 4 months old now so I don’t know if I just have unrealistic expectations or he is just a headstrong poodle.

      @@harleysauceda5401 I've had quite a few dogs to be honest (currently have 7😅) I find if a puppy doesn't want to be obedient under 6 months old just put them in a harness and let them do what they will as long as it's not dangerous, just generally safer and easier on their bodies, I will get a harness with a handle so I can bodily hold them if they get too crazy. Then basic obedience and positive reinforcement with added harsh discipline and seriousness when misbehaving past 6 months to start getting the manners to click. Best to let puppies do as they will other than greeting other dogs(most dogs hate puppies) as desensitization and socializing is key on a confident calm dog. A cinch lead, head halter or springer can be used once older with just as much effectiveness as long as you are training good basic obedience and communication. As long as it's not a hound breed at least lol.
