    Hi Southern Living! Mochi is not traditionally filled with ice cream. It's "traditionally" filled with Adzuki, sweetened red bean paste, if anything at all. Thanks!

      Was just about to comment this. The ice cream filling is 100% american made, It's nice and all but honestly did they even look this up before making the video? These are from Trader Joe's for goodness' sake.

      Carmel Gold-Fanning Dairy products aren't traditionally used in a lot of Asian food. Adding ice cream is definitely an American thing

    • @achanwahn
      @achanwahn 6 лет назад +18

      I agree, mochi isn't necessarily filled with anything. Mochi is just the sticky, glutinous result of pounded Japonica rice. It can be served as plain, with savory or with sweet.
      Hope that helps to clarify a bit better.

    To be honest, I'm not surprised. A lot of more common old southern snack foods and condiments ended up becoming popular in Japan after the 40's I think.... They had fun with them and combined them with stuff so it makes sense if the Japanese of that time liked Southern foods, Southern Grandmother's would like Japanese snack foods. XD

    This is a cute video. The only thing which lets me down with all of the "_____ try Japanese foods!" is that most of the "Japanese food" in those videos are not really Japanese, for example "mochi" in Japan simply refers to plain pounded rice paste and usually eaten with red bean paste or sweet soy powder with brown sugar "mitsu" or syrup. Some can be dyed pink with sakura blossoms and eaten with a cherry leaf, others use yomogi (mugwort) plant so its green. Some mochi can be eaten grilled with soy sauce and seaweed too (isobemaki).....but not with ice cream and food coloring....

    OMFG 1:48. also, just wanted to point out, as I'm sure others have, that this is not tradition mochi, but is an american variety that's filled with ice cream. traditional mochi is by itself or with incorporated flavors. it's quite soft and very very stretchy when fresh (so much so that it's well known that it can be a choking hazard to children and older folks). mochi can be served plain, toasted with soy sauce, sweetened, etc. homecooked mochi is the best and there are now machines that can make it for you at home, which are sort of popular (tho expensive) in the countryside of japan.
