I know someone will talk about my non OSHA approved ladder rig. Let me just say it was safe for me. I jumped up and down on it. Apparently no companies make a tool for your ladder like this because it is not approved by OSHA. In the real world, I just get the job done. If anyone wants to skip the build and go straight to the install click 13:30
It was perfectly executed. Funny thing is that once I stacked 5 pallets to paint the top edge of stairway. Wife thought I was crazy when she woke up found me about 12 feet in the air. My response was "you wanted me to paint" Lol
dfw crown Hey brother. Nice job. Check this tool out provisiontools.com/collections/tools/products/pivit-laddertool. We use this tool for the ladder on steps and for other things. Keep the vids coming.
I'm in my first couple months of seriously working in the carpentry business and have to build window casings for the first time this week. Your videos have been helping me tremendously and I'm very appreciative. I finally wake up looking forward to going to work and your videos have assisted me in enjoying my job even more by having the knowledge needed to preform the best I possibly can.
Jake Nestor I try to read about these things but I feel like the books try to get to fancy with all types of lingo only furniture makers understand. Watching has always been the best method of learning for me and now I’m progressing and learning so much more since I come home and watch trade videos all night long after work.
@@carsongoodman5581 100%. I use the videos to gain knowledge before I go do a job. Makes it a lot easier to understand and saves a lot of time on the jobsite not having to mess around figuring out things on my own. Higher production rate = more money. So spending an hour of my time watching videos on my own time makes me more money. Plus I enjoy viewing them
Thanks friend for your expertise. I, as a 61 yr old, enjoy finish carpentry but I only do it occasionally and it's usually for family, friends and as a ministry. God knows I'd starve to death if I had to do it for a living. I've learned so much from you, especially a higher level of confidence. As a teacher, you inspire others. I pray that God blesses you and your family greatly.
As a finish carpenter myself I really appreciate your craftsmanship and attention to detail. I thoroughly enjoy doing trim work especially crown molding and wainscoting, you'd be surprised how poorly I've seen trim installed in million dollar homes it seems as if the previous workers took no pride or care in their work. I've seen some work that did not even have the joints /seams sanded or caulked lol oh well more repair work for me!
Fantastic job, never easy working at a height. We'd love to do this in our house to hide the window installations. Our house is brick built without gypsum board inside. Would you recommend using packers to space timber away from the surface of the reveal - i'm worried about moisture getting trapped behind. Is it worth sealing the hidden faces of the timber? Appreciate your advice, keep up the great work!
I’m a wallcovering guy and since learning great tips from your videos, I’ve incorporated some basic trim work into my projects! More profitable!💪😎 Keep up the great work!
Awesome step by step explanation. Sure its much more efficient to frame then put it up. Nice to see a sincerely honest contractor care about their finished product.
Appreciate your efforts at making these videos. I appreciate you sharing not only what you are doing but why you are doing specific things. Keep up the good work.
I used to work for the ‘piano man’ doing finish carpentry. He was the piano man because every miter, paint grade or not , was perfect. Class act love your work!
I had a bunch of 4x6 windows and this is exactly what I did. I built and molded all the frames centered them with shims and presto! fastest install ever with minimum caulking. Great video.
Little giant has a stair adaptor for its ladder. Love your content, I think it's awesome that you share your skill. Your work is top of the mark. Thank you!
So I love your videos. You remind me of a kid that work for me at Euro Design Cabinets. He was always helpful and wanted to better himself always. This framed trim idea is great also for folks who have windows installed to their home that was single pain from back when. The installers only add caulk to seal in the mew ones. This would make for more air tight and better sealed. Love it. The Grumpy Gunny.
Hello I'm doing dyi window trims and I like the way you did yours with 3 pieces instead of molding trims. Thank you for sharing your own creations you're very talented yes you should charge for it.
I love that, man. Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to show us that! If I can add to an already great idea- if the job was going to include paint work, you could fill and paint the unit before putting it up so all you'd need to do is fill your final nail holes at that height
Hello fellow craftsman. Done a lot of trim and I have always used a sharp utility blade to mark my cuts.. ( need sharp eyes, used to have them, lol) No guessing on which side of the line to cut, no sharpening pencils.. Great vids. Nice to know that there are still craftsman out there.. Feel like we are a dying breed.. Keep it up!
Hey man! I really like your videos. I live in Vancouver BC. I'm a carpenter who has worked his way to the top working for prime contractors building buildings. I'm now a CSO / Site super. I have always been in commercial construction. I have been doing side jobs on weekends via craigslist and a bit of word of mouth. I truly love the time I spend doing these side jobs and when I can bring a friend along and pay them as well I get really stoked. i really enjoy when you pull a tool out of your bag that I use all the time. that Kreg multi mark gets used WAYY more than the pocket hole jig. and it came as a bonus tool in the master Kit.
I liked the go pro style video footage. You and your helper can both be working and not have to worry about someone holding a camera. As always keep up the good work bud.
I agree with you we have to get the job done in the field things are not always perfect we have to get creative as long as it is safe after all you are the one working on it so I am sure you made it safe nice window casement keep up the great work thanks
Fit like a glove! Liked the school video also , I think you set a good example to those kids when you told them you don't drink or do drugs. Thumbs up!

I used this same process for my downstairs windows, and it worked flawlessly. As an added bonus, you can use self-adhesive foam rubber seal on the inside edges to close off any drafts. I also painted it before install, to save the headache of taping and scraping.
I read quite a few comments before adding mine. Making a rig or jig and testing it yourself, you knew that you would be safe so when it came to the installation your mind was on that and not divided between safety and the job at hand. Very well done !! I was trying to remember though, isn't stairway work one of the claims that the Little Giant ladders infomercial used to make? Plus they make a scaffold accessory I think. Either way Great job and thanks for sharing your talent and video, Rodney
Great carpenter, awesome instructor. Being good at a job is great being able to train others to do great is something that can't be taught. Well done your hired...or if your hiring you have a lucky apprentice!
Always love your work , I am actually doing the same thing right now , but not even up high , looks like a great idea to make everything ahead of time ,
Definitely yes to the chest cam. Gives a good view to your hands to reinforce what you're saying. Your hoses seem pretty pliable and easy to manipulate. Have you discovered any preferences there?
That was awesome. I caught myself holding my breath when you were sliding it into place! lol Don't worry about the negative Nancies, most never work on a jobsite like this. You got to do, what you dot to do in order to get the job done!
Are you kidding me? It's awesome! I was pondering whether I want to build one now or wait til I really need to use it. at the moment I'm able to stand my Little Giant on the railing base and lean it against the wall. I'm hoping it will also be useful to lend to friends trying to do the same, my question is are all modern stairs a common standard pitch?
Great video.. Just made that casing for a bathroom window.. Had some free time at home and didn't feel like making on site in the tiny bathroom.. Came out great! Keep up the great work and vids. Thanks
Another excellent video again. I usually don't comment on videos, however I had no idea that Kreg multi-mark even existed, thank you, we always made our own out of hardwood. Maybe I can give you a piece of advice too, if you rip your jamb on a slight bevel you can get a better fit to the window when the framing isn't straight, or the energy seal caulking holds your jamb out.
Excellent idea, and this has been a big help to me as I am going to be cutting a hatch in a stud partition wall so I can put a couple of short sliding doors in it ,I was going to build it bit by bit but that is way better, thank you
Another fine video! 😎 I liked the close up shots of your markings. I guess that is the go camera you referred to. I have that KREG multi tool and just use it as a combination ruler. “THANKS” I didn’t know I can use it for that. The close ups of your pencil lines helps much and also how you draw your cut on the piece of wood. Keeps everything in line. I am definitely going to become a subscriber but it will be on the low end. I have learn so much over the years that I should start giving back. Peace Michael A. Southern California 😎
Thanks for showing us the details and I really enjoy the body cam to see how it is actually made. After seeing your video, I could go build on too...It would have been nice to see how you measure the inside of the window as well...Great job...
Nice! I always build my extension jambs pre-trimmed like this. For new builds, I always have to make sure they do not order extension jambs pre-installed so that I can do every window this way. The pre-installed jambs never sit flush with the drywall and I’m always having to fix things or leave larger than necessary caulk gaps for the painter. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone else do it. Smarter not harder.
Awesome videos, great work. Easy way to get the long to long casing measurements for the frame is measure inside dimension of frame, add 3/8" (for the two 3/16" reveals) then add 5" (for the two pieces 2-1/2" casing). Just a little easier than trying to position the loose pieces and taking a measurement.
I had to make one of those jigs to make some repairs on a second story above the steps. Made mine way bigger and stronger than needed, but it got the job done!
Good video Richard, you got it right. The only thing I do different is dado the frame and glue the miters on casing. I glue all miters on any window or door casing, but that's just me I am old school.
If you take the 1.5” off your verticles... it makes it easier to dry fit as the horizontal casing will be supported by the verticals. Just how I do it. Great videos. Thanks.
I watched this video and finished my first 3 windows ever. This technique works quite well! I wish I had a table saw though. Ripping finish wood with a circular saw is hard. Turned out great though!
You made me nervous movin that in one piece without using your 2 PART GLUE.. BAD ASS MAN GREAT JOB..! Like a gluuv.. lol you were def the window wisperer on this sukka show em whos boss... 👊
Been doing my window jambs and casing like this for years. It’s the only way to go especially trying to trim and ICF opening. Only thing I’d add or do different is pre build my casing with 2p-10 then attach it to the jamb. Either way looks good dude!!!
Good video..it all made sense to me..chest cam worked, but be careful on those turn around, made me a little sea sick.. overall very informative..now I know why contractors state a window job can be done in several hours.. keep the videos coming..
I approve of your ladder stand have to do what you have to do to get up there I also like the chest camera do you let you see up close what you’re looking at nice build.
Good stuff bro 👍 I personally love doing the majority of my installs like that for trim, it's so much easier. I'll do it for full jamb setups like that or even just picture frame casing setups, use the miter clamps with some glue and a couple tacks in the corners, and blammo, bring it in the house, nail it up, and walk away, job well done 😎👌
Love your style of videos - they are great instructional tools for part-timers, like myself. I also like your links to tools that you use. My DeWalt DHS790AT2 just arrived yesterday and is calling out to be used. Many thanks for taking the time and making the effort to produce these helpful shows. As for the GoPro, it has its place, but should be used discerningly, as it can be distracting when it's jumping around. I've seen other videos (not yours), that are enough to trigger motion sickness in mere mortals from the body movements.
If people put weight on the bottom jamb the nails will hold up better the other way. And doors the same applies even more so on the top or the margins get sloppy over time.
I do the same shoot tops and bottoms into the sides. I pre cut my casing without having to measure with the margin lines. Add 3/8 to the sides and subtract 7/8 on the tops and bottoms
Awesome video for creating window trims, i will add for sealing the back to cock the trim before installing for a really good seal which is optional, thanks guys
Really nice job! I have a custom cabinet shop with hundreds of thousands of dollars of machine and I am very impressed with your skill! A Paulk style workbench or some light weight horses will make your life easier as you get older. Working on the ground will get harder. Also, read 2 second lean by Paul Akers at Fastcap. You would really benefit from his ideas! Great work! Great video!
Try using a little Giant ladder, they're awesome. They're perfect for working on/above stairs. You can make the ladder an A frame and make one side longer than the other, can even use planks with them, they're pretty stout.
I love this tutorial. You are a great communicator! I have 1 question: No finish screws for jamb build? While I understand that the casing will hold the jambs together, 18ga brads don't have much grip, especially with only 3 brads per jamb corners. But if this unit stays tight then maybe I been wasting alot of time predrilling and screwing the jambs together (?) Much Respect to you, you gained a subscriber with this video.
Great videos! You make it look so easy that I would definitely try it myself. Then, after promptly screwing it up, I would call you to re-do it the right way. lol
Fun watching you work and explaining things in real terms. What's it like working in 70+ degree weather all year? Lucky. Hey one thing, lower that table saw blade! Begging for kickback that high up off the surface of the wood. Lower so that just the teeth are above the surface. OSHA has it's place, but over time they have become do-gooder trying to protect us from everything we do. I'm surprised we don't have to put duct tape on the bottom of our shoes just to keep from slipping on the sidewalk. It's crazy. The only place I'm on their side is fall protection on roofs. Otherwise they are worthless.
I know someone will talk about my non OSHA approved ladder rig. Let me just say it was safe for me. I jumped up and down on it. Apparently no companies make a tool for your ladder like this because it is not approved by OSHA. In the real world, I just get the job done. Love your work and general approach. Video quality and style are great.
Love this video and how you walk through the WHOLE process and explain it so anyone can understand.
Thanks for showing us the details and I really enjoy the body cam to see how it is actually made. After seeing your video, I could go build on too...It would have been nice to see how you measure the inside of the window as well...Great job...
Thank you sir. I’ve got 9 windows to do just like this. Excellent break down of how to get it done.
Nice! I always build my extension jambs pre-trimmed like this. For new builds, I always have to make sure they do not order extension jambs pre-installed so that I can do every window this way. You are top-notch at what you do Richard. Great job! 👌🏼
I had to make one of those jigs to make some repairs on a second story above the steps. Made mine way bigger and stronger than needed, but it got the job done!
Awesome work and video as usual! I tend to make the sub
traction on the verticals so that the legs support the header:)
It looks like a great job the only thing I would wonder is how do you get the foam in that goes between the window jam and the wall
Good video Richard, you got it right. The only thing I do different is dado the frame and glue the miters on casing. I glue all miters on any window or door casing, but that's just me I am old school.
I love the stair jig! That's a real application for the real world. Inspectors etc may not like it, but that's often how it goes.
If you take the 1.5” off your verticles... it makes it easier to dry fit as the horizontal casing will be supported by the verticals. Just how I do it.

I love the stand for your ladder! Great idea and great build on your part. Love your videos!
Great job ! you inspire me that perfection is obtainable every time with the right plan and patience !
Not only r u handsome too watch but an amazing carpenter that enjoys his craftsmanship!
I'm going to be doing this to three basement windows soon. Thanks for the quick tutorial.
You do great work! Question though. Why aren't you glueing your joins? 18g nails don't have much of a head. They can pop.
I loved it, I just hoping nothing was tweaked. So you didn't take a quarter off, and you cut the center of the line, outside, inside?
Try using a little Giant ladder, they're awesome. They're perfect for working on/above stairs. You can make the ladder an A frame and make one side longer than the other, can even use planks with them, they're pretty stout.
I love this tutorial. You are a great communicator! I have 1 question: No finish screws for jamb build? While I understand that the casing will hold the jambs together, 18ga brads don't have much grip, especially with only 3 brads per jamb corners. But if this unit stays tight then maybe I been wasting alot of time predrilling and screwing the jambs together (?)
Much Respect to you, you gained a subscriber with this video.
Nice job RICHARD!
WHEN I INSTALL CROWN MAKE TIGHT AS THAT , NAIL CENTER OUT.
Can I just hire you to come trim my new house! I love your attitude and work. Thank you for the videos.
I'd recommend a rag between a wall and the ladder, saves on painting over the scratches/rubber marks.
Or a piece of armaflex
i could watch you all day
Great videos! You make it look so easy that I would definitely try it myself. Then, after promptly screwing it up, I would call you to re-do it the right way. lol
Great video and I’ll be using the stairway jig myself because I have a light on the ceiling in an identical type of set up!
They have leg extender for extension ladders for leveling ,love your vids.
Thanks Richard. U saves me some time on your video. On a job I’m on now 👍👍
Fun watching you work and explaining things in real terms.
Nice. You're a good teacher as well as carpenter.
Richard, Great video as always....learn things from every video you do...Thanks....
Great vid. I’ve got 9 windows I plan to trim out with this breakdown. Thank you sir. DFW appro
I sometimes thumbs up before watching! Because know you job is done well.....
Hello.....First of all, thank you for making these videos. What is the purpose of leaving the "reveal"? Does it get covered? Thanks!
Love your videos. Do you have a video on square up your miter saw? Thanks
In a later video you used the castle pocket holed machine. Could you have used pocket holes here?
Good thing the window opening was square… Great work
