  • In this video, Vladimir London, a Life Drawing Academy tutor (lifedrawing.ac..., will explain the know-how of drawing a perfect horizontal square in perspective. This method is unique and developed by Vladimir.
Let's begin with two vanishing lines. They will converge into one vanishing point somewhere on the horizon beyond the drawing area. The horizontal axis that spans between these two lines is divided in half. The blue line is used to check this proportion. The axis in perspective follows the vanishing angle. Another axis points into the second vanishing point. Two green dots are important landmarks. These are the points where a perfect ellipse touches two vanishing lines. Two more green dots are used to draw two remaining vanishing lines. To check if this geometry is correct, we can use two diagonals of the square, which should cross exactly in the middle of the oval, which is a circle inscribed into this square.
Now, let's make another drawing using the unique method developed by Vladimir London. I begin with two vanishing lines, pointing to the same vanishing point beyond the drawing area. The horizontal line is used to divide the depth in half. It is split in half. The vanishing line crosses the middle line in a point marked in green. This point is where a perfect ellipse touches the vanishing line. On the opposite side, there is another green point, which is used for drawing the remaining vanishing line. Two diagonals of that square have to cross in the middle of the oval, which is a circle in perspective, inscribed into that square. Through this center goes one more line in perspective that crosses two sides of a perfect square in the middle of both sides. A perfect square is needed to draw a perfect cube in perspective. A cube can be used to draw so many other things you see around you.

Thanks for sharing fundamental lessons. This is really an interesting method. Rarely, if not never, does anyone talk or teach about drawing perfect rectangles.
Thanks to your efforts, I understand and draw perfect ellipses and rectangles better.
I am just curious to know. Is it crucial to learn to draw perfect rectangles?

Glad it was helpful! Drawing square in perspective is needed to draw a cube in perspective. Cube is the simplest 3D object with width, height and depth and good understanding how to draw it in perspective is needed for drawing any other 3D objects. For example, a car can be simplified as several cuboids; if you know how to draw a cube, it would help with drawing a car; the same with any other 3D objects. I hope this helps.

On what basis did we draw "the another axis"? What is the necessary condition to draw it at this inclination or angle?

Will using the method of X to correct the eclipse shape work if the eclipse were to drawn incorrectly?

If you draw a distorted ellipse, it would not be an ellipse, so it could not be used to spot mistakes when drawing squares, etc.
