just completed a bootcamp myself, dont get discouraged by current layoffs, Bootcamps save companies tons of money and benefits all parties, once completed you still have to hustle and it beats getting a masters!
I’m about two month into the GT bootcamp, finishing up our first project. Seeing all those layoffs spooked me a little, but you’re right. At the end of the day the skills I’m learning are still going to be valuable when the market bounces back. Thanks for continuing to share your thoughts and experiences!
I’m glad I saw your video. Your honest inputs are very helpful. I’m literally about to do my application interview and trying to calm myself down. I hope I’ll pass the interview 🙏🏼. I’ll let you know if I pass
Thanks for posting.. Currently brand new to coding but really interested. Going to do the bootcamp route because as a 35 year old I don’t feel I have the luxury of time to dedicate 4 years for a degree/school.
Interested 35yrs old as well. Planning to attend Coding Dojo this coming spring. In the mean time doing as much research as I can and doing a few corses in FreeCodeCamp as well to know a little of what I’m getting into.
Steph! So glad I found you channel. Your explanations are so spot on and your voice is so soothing and easy to listen to! I'm starting with Shecodes bootcamp Monday and I had started the 100devs program but I really needed the accountability and structure from a program and not something that completely self paced like 100devs, so I plan to use it for learning back end once I've completed the shecodes courses.
I like it!! Yep…if one were curious about getting into an information technology focused field of work, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about available jobs at the moment. It takes a special mindset to learn the material let alone perform repetitive functions on a daily basis. Everybody’s got a place in life. Try it out. Structure is definitely key. A Day in the life videos are helpful imo 🎉
Both valid points. If I didn’t already have a bunch of college degrees (BA, MA, PhD) I would get a CS degree because of course it’s better than a bootcamp. But that route doesn’t make sense for someone who is in their 30s or older and already has a degree. It’s far too expensive and time consuming. So bootcamp is the next best option!
So I'm torn I start a bootcamp in two days but thankfully I'm also a current wildland firefighter so if tech doesn't work out I can continue to break my body until I die 😂
did you land your job with only the bootcamp certificate? or did the certificate help alongside with a degree and/or prior experience? if u answered this in the video, i apologize as i might have missed it.
Yeah, so I have a degree but in History so not relevant at all. No prior experience whatsoever before bootcamp. Hired based on technical skills and probably the “soft” skills based on the interview
Also, to add, once you graduate, continue to build projects and learn algorithms while applying for jobs. Also, offer your programming services for free to build upon experience and add to your resume 😅
Oh yeah, and I also had a bachelors degree in Broadcast Communications. So, my field of study was also irrelevant to tech. But my coding bootcamp certification allowed me to eventually get hired. Plus, I also grinded on codeacademy and earned additional certifications there as well. 😂😅
heres my video on why i left academia if youre curious! ruclips.net/video/pkqlq4igadI/видео.html there were a lot of reasons.. i dont even know how i found coding lol. it started with a google search tbh and then i very spontaneously registered for a coding bootcamp without actually doing much research on it 😅 but it all worked out in the end
I work in academia too and there's just not much growth. I do enrollment and teach part-time and there's just not a lot of promotions for middle level management or senior level management. So definitely looking at a boot camp
Nice video thank you. As always, of course. I cannot believe that you have a PhD in history yet are now thriving as a computer software language person. That blows my mind. It shouldn’t be that way., just my opinion- but I feel your intelligence would be Greatly welcomed within the IT world if you were to pursue another PhD but within IT… thanks!
I will pick coding all day everyday compared to doing any customer facing role. I mean lets be honest, nobody wants to deal with customers because customers are rude, toxic, and have attitude. We’ve seen the Karens, nobody wants to deal with that day in and day out for the rest of their lives. Nobody wants to work in a call center and be abused and receive hurtful and hateful words from the customer. Coding is the way to go. Gives high salary, better schedule, and no need to deal with customers.
I did Georgia techs bootcamp but I heard they’re not longer enrolling. The curriculum is the same as other Trilogy bootcamps so you could look into another one of those! I would also check out Springboard and Flatiron, I have heard good things.
Hi Stephf, Thanks for your video. Very informative. What bootcamp did you attend Stephf? Can you recommend an in-person coding bootcamp? I'll go for an in-person over an online program.

yes Georgia Tech is where i went. i can only speak on my experience and for me it was a great program and i got a job right away. im sure there are better programs out there but there are a lot of factors to weigh. i think you also get what you put in
The range is really wide. It depends on your skills, since not everyone finishing a bootcamp is at the same level. And I think a lot of the time you’re going to be evaluated based on your projects and technical interview. That said, I think it’s reasonable to expect 70-90k for your first job right out of bootcamp in this area. Some people I know make less than that, but the potential to make more is definitely there. Really depends on how talented you are, what kind of position it is, and which company
@@stephf yeah that’s why many can’t able to do it. They have to pay for their everyday expenses and without job they can’t because in a boot camp they need you as a full time student.
They do have part time programs. It would definitely be hard but doable if u really want it! Also some programs will allow you to pay them after you get your first job as a percentage of your paycheck for a certain amount of time. It may not be worth it depending on your situation but something to consider!

Agree
College degree in CS or certificates always look better on a resume than a coding bootcamp
yea but u have to have time and finance to do it. Bootcamp is a quick path for people who do not have much time to find new career!

💯 i am not suited to customer facing roles either. but some people are really good at it and handle that environment well!
Were you able to leverage the bootcamp into the role youre in now?
yes! i currently work as a software developer and the bootcamp helped so much to get the job and with the work itself

Is a college degree a requirement for most boot camps
Not at all!

Georgia tech

It goes by super fast so I was able to maintain the intensity of it for the three months. But it’s very overwhelming. Can only do that a short time
