summit into Oakhurst is deadwood. named after forest fire. lived there in 1964. high school
Here's some good news: Hwy 41 from Avenue 12 to Avenue 15 will become a 4-lane (they need to extend it to Hwy 145 though). The spot at 6:50 is called "Rocky Cut", and is a very accident-prone area for multiple reasons (vehicle accidents, rockfalls, etc).
That's great to hear!
I remember going on that highway with my aunt and her as well as my uncle used to live in Oakhurst, CA. I had a good time up there, but it was a long drive to get to their house, but it's really nice up there.
California is a beautiful state for me ❤.
Beautiful drive!
Thanks Carl!
CA route 41 goes from being a major freeway to a rural 2-lane road in a matter of miles!
Love the drive going though the Serra Nevada foothills. I'm assuming you're going to continue the drive into Yosemite National Park (which despite officially ending at CA route 140, state maintenance actually ends at the road's entrance of the park.)
A few years ago, I drove all of CA 41 from Morro Bay to the border of Yosemite for my 41st birthday! (how's that for road-geekery?) The stretch where it goes from two-lane to expressway to freeway, then back to two lane again was quite interesting - I enjoyed seeing it again through your video. I also like the rapid transition from the extremely flat terrain in southern Madera County into the hills and then mountains 🛣
Nice video! Though not quite my neck of the woods-I live just east of the San Joaquin River in Auberry on the Fresno side, you've captured the Foothills of the Southern Sierra quite well. Just take a drive up 168 from Fresno or Clovis up to Shaver Lake or Huntington Lake-right now, there's quite a bit of snow still-which does hide some of the Creek Fire scars. Both lakes are FULL right now, and I mean just that. 168 would've been a Trans-Sierra route, but the Wilderness Act of 1964, which established the John Muir Wilderness, put paid to that-would've gone from Huntington Lake up Kaiser Pass to Edison Lake, then east to Paiute Pass, then down to Lake Sabrina (where it starts up again) and Bishop....
Btw, there are quite a few wrecks on 41. Especially coming down the hill into the Valley.
I live on the banks of the San Joaquin River myself! Thanks for tuning in Matt!
Hello good neighbor, with love from Mariposa County!!! Having Hwy 168 go through to the East Side makes sense, but it would still shut down during the winter. There would need to be some hard-core hikers to go up there to hike the potential route to see if it's at all possible to do so.
@@grizzfan08 Thanks for the reply: Unfortunately, the 168 over the Sierra will remain on paper: the route from Florence Lake-Paiute Canyon-Paiute Pass-Lake Sabrina (where the 168 starts up again on the East Side) is now part of the John Muir Wilderness... the road was proposed at several times between the 1920s and early 1960s, but was killed when the Wilderness Act was passed in 1964.
@@grizzfan08I80 shuts down every year and people turn around because of the snow but in the summer it’s just as beautiful - anywhere on the Sierra Nevada mountains 🏔️
I remember Coarsegold and Oakhurst were the headquarters of Sierra On-Line, which made high-profile computer games 30-40 years ago
I read about that on Wikipedia when doing some research for this video!
Was one of the games Train Town?
@@eclipsetheengineer4338 Sierra published a game with that title in 1999
Went to US-395 last week and saw much more snow pack probably due to higher elevation
I’m jealous!! I really want to check out that Highway this year with all the snow!
Yes, the entry into Yosemite valley coming out of the tunnel is a mind blower.
One of the best ways to enter a national park!
I drove to Yosemite back and forth several times..but not recomend night drive is dangerous...
I can imagine especially if you’re not used to the curves.
The.unamed.summit is deadwood. Born and raised in Coarsegold since 81.
