    NOTE: My plan is to get the 2-Queen System and put Flow-Supers on it.
    We'll see how that goes. :)
    Today's topics are listed below:
    1) My honey was at 20.5% can I put it in my convection oven to dry it down?
    2) When should I add a second deep if the bees aren't warming the space they are currently in?
    3) I have a hive that appears queenless on day 10 or 11 after swarming. Can I use QMP to test if they have a queen or not?
    4) Made a split, the split has eggs, the original colony doesn't. Any thoughts on this?
    5) I tried to put my $40 queen into the Queen Isolation Cage, but she did a 180 and flew off. I tried putting the wooden queen cage inside the QIC and it was tough to get out later on. What are your thoughts on this?
    6) I used double-bubble as insulation on top of my hives until ants moved into them. Now I've removed all Double-Bubble, have you seen anything like this?

      We added a package of carniolans and one to a 5 frame nucleus. The nucleus took off running and the Keeper’s hive package seems average but this is way to small a sample to compare.

    Hi Fred
    Watching this on a Sunday,
    as we had x2 'back to back' Dry Days here in Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
    Despite an amazing Spring Fruit Blossom and then Oil Seed Rape (Canola) Crop locally, the Hives are rather 'light' re Honey Harvest (??) And its Colder now in June, than what it was back in early May !. . .
    It didnt even make 12C (50's) today. And it has Rained so, so much, its just Damp & Chilly !!!
    (Apparently some Towns in South England had Frost on the Ground last night.) While it Snowed on the Mountains in the Highland Glens. Just crazy.
    Weather has gone 'backwards' in the last few Weeks. 🙄
    Anybody else "not seeing" any Signs of Swarming yet ?!? Checked all through each and every Hive : their Boxes, each Frame one by one ! Took all Fri & Sat to do this. No Queen Cups, no Signs of any Queen Cells. Plenty of Bees in all Stages (BIAS) and good numbers of 'permitted' Drones.(aka : all Queens in good Laying Patterns / with the right % of Drones she has laid re this Time of Year.)
    Yet the Yields are weigh down to last Year. Very odd. . .
    Whats with 'June' and Start of Summer this : Bee Season. . . Poor so far & its continuing so.
    This Time last Year : 👀
    I had a (huge) Incoming Swarm from someone's else's Hive : including a 'Marked Queen' find my Garden Washing Line & Pole, to House themselves in one of my prepared Bait Hives. back on 6th June '23 ! 👍
    She's still a real good Colony : well Natured, with a lovely Laying Pattern, yet she too is low on the usual Honey Harvest. 😵‍💫
    We still have the OSR to take, before it Crystallises further.
    Then its Soft Fruit Crops, wild Blackberry & then the 'Ling' and 'Bell' "Heathers"! Yum. 😋
    We wait ages for the Bee Season to finally get going,
    (to find we are x2 Weeks away from "Mid Summer.') To date no signs of a 'Flaming June'. I'm in the Home watching more Rain pour down, while the Girls do 'brief' sprints off to an adjacent Wild Meadow (Flowering all sorts) in between more incoming Dark Clouds. Yikes ! 😕
    Tip :
    For those with high Moisture 'Levels' in their Capped Honey,
    I highly Recommend getting a Multi-Tray "Food Dehydrator."
    The Super Deep (long) Metal Oven types 'fit a Brood Frame"
    off a Langstroth nicely ! 👌
    OK most use Supers and their Medium Frames. But I have several Double Deep Lang Nucs so need to 'dry' not (cook) that Scottish moisture out of said Frames. More so this Year. 🤭
    Got my 'Dehydrator' off Amazon (UK.) Hardly Costs anything to Run Utility Bill wise. And safer than the Kitchen Oven.
    And it means I can continue to 'wick' away those Frames in a dedicated corner. And still have some Supper. Not melt the place down. . . Literally.
    Hope this helps. 😎
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
    Happy Beekeeping 2024
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
    Treating myself !
    Ordered myself x2 Black Breeder Queens (back in Jan !)
    So far : Delivery has been put back 'Twice' and the Bee Comp breeding them, has had worse Weather, than us a bit further North of the Border. So if 'Hobby Beeks' are having it bad, think what the Commercial Guys are experiencing too. 🤔
    My Bees are mainly Mutts, with a fair amount of Native Black Bee in them.
    I want to up more of the Black Genetics. These 'Tiny' Slimmer Bees : are as 'Hard as Nails !'
    A really well known Scottish Bee 'Whisperer/ Guru' says Black Bees do well here in Scotland, comparred to (Soft) Italian 'Stripey' Bees so many 'Order' yet, fail miserably with.
    So keep Bees (and Queens) as 'locally' as possible. . . Simples.
    * This Dehydrator has a Dozen thin Wire Trays (so I take every Second one out, meaning I can get x5 Deep Lang Frames in at any one time. Can also make my own Pollen Patties too. . .
    When the 'Beek' adds a tiny bit to much Sugar Solution to the Pollen Powder. . . Atmospheric moisture can mean 'a like for like mix' can be over sticky and needs 'drying out a bit' before adding to a Hive.
    So this Gadget does : Honey, Pollen Patties, as well as 'Dry Down' Oops Fruit discounts.
    Sure there must be uses I haven't thought about, yet. 🤭

  • @researcherAmateur

    Yap, here we all keep 3/8 entrances all year. I never seen a beekeeper here open the entire side of the hive. Some even only use the round 3/4 hole all year. The hole works great for nucks and makes it very easy to defend the hive for bees.

    I liked that Brave Heart analogy it seemed to fit, "we have purpose, and our nature will not be overcome". Seems to fit really well. 🙂 That baby skunk exploring outside its nest cavity was neat to see, my younger self would have gone seek and destroy on them but, I've mellowed with age, just enjoying nature now. I have ground hogs living under a shed and racoons in the shed. A few years ago, I started live trapping them and releasing them many miles away, lately I just let them be.

    Ended up doing the Newspaper thing at lunch. I’ll pick up a Ceracell Bee Escape, they look handy in general. I’ve just been removing one frame at a time and doing the shake / brush thing in the rare instances when I want to collect honey.
    Btw, my colonies are pretty happy. They swarm, make drones and do their thing. I try not to stick my fingers in them and don’t try to maximize my honey production. 🙂

    Fred, did you notice that the Temp Queen (QMP) from Better Bee is 1/4" shorter than in the past? I removed a particularly nasty Africanized colony, killed the queen, and hived the bees I'd vacuumed out- but the temp queen didn't seem to make any difference. They all drifted over to other hives. I've got to queens being mailed on June 11, and only one hive to put them into. However, lots of calls... we'll see.
    I've given up on BeeWeaver. Not buying any more clipped queens.

      @@FrederickDunn Hi I came back here to edit watched his video part 3, uses 7 frames only more no good in one box it’s deeper then we have and other measurement for spider and climate control he uses it for 30 years a lot to say about it it depends what you want to do to with bees he only uses queens March and April for work force in the summer then no queens he saves them eggs 😁he keeps them caged and let bees collect honey then combines all that left together and has 2 queens later in August so they make strong colonies with out the mite says The summer brood only make weak bees and use queens in the August for strong colonies he then keeps them all together for warmth he uses smaller queen excluder in the hive for temp control in the winter he says we pretty much raising mite in the summer if let brood to develop making bees to work for no reason people use only 30% of bees potential in beekeeping his Name Milenin beekeeper he is so far is the #1 in the video he has 4 queen config he says you can have up to 6 queens in the config the bottom part 2 hives and next 2 level is 4 separate hives just like you said it can be the top level is honey or brood toy then taking it off anyway and suppers I suspect there is a some sort a queen excluder somewhere i saw in the video he has a lot of videos and books in Russian There a lot to learn this kind of hive set up so bees won’t fight in the spring for bee development life cycle he is not advising the use of a metal queen isolation cages the metal bars does something to the abdomen of the queen when she walks on the bottom part of it he invented wooden one and it gets inserted into the comb well there is a trick to that wood cannot be too thick or bees will start to shew on the comb and it will fall out. By having multi item hives you will not use a lot of feed also I can go on and on!!🐝

    Hi Fred - great week again! I have more questions regarding honey water content. Honey was at 18% in the Fall and fully capped. We gauge checked the refractometer per instructions. We put all our honey in pint canning jars. The lids started to bulge a little and I released the pressure last week. They are not moldy but seem a little ‘strong’ almost like they did ferment, but could it be peroxide buildup on top?
    Half of the jars that were stored at 60F in a cooler room all crystallized, so I will heat slightly before use or just use in tea, but some of the jars have to stay in a pantry that is about 70F.
    If it is fermented, does it have a use? Cooking? Mead? Too late to dehydrate further? Mix with sugar syrup for bee feed? Lots of folks say it is fermented, but “then what” next step has been vague. Are people being too kind and not telling me to toss it? If so, how does one get rid of 60 gallons of fermented honey? Thank you!

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  26 дней назад

      I'm going to address this potential issue on Friday. Yes, you can often find peroxide on top of that honey, and particularly when it's foamy, or possitive pressure builds. Moisture got to that honey. This often results in a large foamy head that can leak through the lid and make a mess. You can scrape off the top until you're down to good honey again, and it's still usable.

    Certainly could have used that cage a couple days ago, one of my Layens hives swarmed and over the swamp they flew. It's a good time of season for them to start a new home though. Snapping turtles are digging in my garden laying eggs. 60- 90 days before they hatch...the past 3 days and each day there are new nest holes. They most likely won't all have eggs, but those nest I will mark and wait...no planting there. Just remember Fred, moles and voles by digging tunnels help to aerate the ground. Thanks for sharing, peace, Brice

    Can't find a Ceracell 10-frame bee escape anywhere. An 8-frame is available both from Blithewood Bee Company, (who are awesome), and Amazon... Both charge nearly 30 dollars shipping, and I'd rather my money go directly to Blithewood bees. And I only have 10-frame or 5-frame hives; so I guess I'll simply have to order it another time. The queenless Africanized bees seem to integrate into my other hives with minimal fighting anyway. I've still got hive gates on all my hives, and the bee drift has to go in through the gates; but not really digging the gates as much as at first. They're okay.
    I love your bee talk. I'm making too many videos right now, and not much time to edit and post. So, I APPRECIATE YOU, FRED.

      Maybe you can message Blythewood Company? He's very responsive. The issue with Ceracell is that they just don't have enough sellers in the U.S., and they are from New Zealand. That is high shipping for sure! Wow.

    I use rigid pink insulation within quilt boxes all year but the ants make nests in them and there are HUNDREDS of ants, not just an "annoying few". If I completely surround the polystyrene with foil wrap or tape will it still have the same insulating properties?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  26 дней назад +1

      Yes, the insulation value won't be disrupted by the foil.

    Mist the Queen (in the cage) with a light sugar solution (1:1) and she will need to be cleaned off before she can fly . . .

    Much easier to clean the trays weekly than waiting too long when the debris solidifies.

    Hello, Mr. Dunn. Might I please kindly ask for your advice on my confusing situation? I installed a NUC on May 18 with a marked Queen. There was much less activity on the landing board compared to my other hive. Today, June 10, I opened the hive up : no sign of my marked Queen, no capped brood, no larvae that I could see, no eggs. Just lots of nectar. Slightly more bees than the NUC had initially. They had only built out half of a single empty frame in the 3 weeks since I installed the NUC. But then, on the newly built out comb, I spotted another unmarked queen. I assumed they raised her. What do I do now? Simply hope she is mated and begins to lay eggs soon? Inspect the hive in another week? Leave it alone for longer? I do not want to install a new Queen, since they have a queen - just not the same one which came with the NUC! Thanks for your thoughts and any suggestions, Marie-Louise in southern Ontario, with my thanks

      @FrederickDunn  24 дня назад

      Sounds like they superceded their queen. I'd let it ride out, as you now have a queen and you'll know in the next 12 days if she's viable as you should observe eggs then. So, my suggestion is to log everything you observed, including the stages of any remaining brood etc. And then let us know what you observe in 12 days. I wouldn't try to re-queen at this time. I would keep them fed as they have lost some time with that brood break.

    Hi Fred 👋 You said we can use OAV with supers. Its going around some bee groups that you can not. Use OAV with Supers on in NYS? The only info I'm finding is 2021 and the articles say you can not use OAV with supers on. I don't use OAV with supers on but, want to know the correct information. Do you have a web page for me?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  20 дней назад +1

      Yes, Oxalic Acid is approved for use with honey supers on. That has been approved. However, each State can put their own increased restrictions on if they so choose. In my State, it's permitted and has been approved.
      Here's the current situation:
      The FDA approved a tolerance for oxalic acid residue in honey in February 2021. This means honey with low levels of oxalic acid can be sold.
      However, oxalic acid product labels haven't been updated yet. Most labels currently say "Do not use when honey supers are in place."
      There are efforts to get the labels changed. The USDA is working on a supplemental label that would allow oxalic acid use with honey supers.
      If you look at the label on the Oxalic Acid that I showed in today's video, it clearly states that it's approved for use with honey supers on.
      I would not be surprised if California has additional restrictions. I always say that the label is the guide.

    Why would anyone "pull the fondant plug"? The cork plug is pulled, and a nail makes a hole through the fondant. The bees on both sides of the cage eat the fondant to free the queen. NO DIRECT RELEASES!

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  26 дней назад

      I don't know anything about the candy crush adverts. We don't get to select ads, they are targeted to the viewer's viewing practices based on what Google thinks would be of interest. I don't allow any ads to run mid-reel as I find that disrupting, but I do permit RUclips/Google to run them before and after. Since that's out of my control, all I can say is that you'll be missed.
