- In this video we compare two very capable 4x4 vehicles - the Mitsubishi Shogun ( Pajero ) and the new Land Rover Defender 110. They are more similar than you may think !
Авто/Мото
The Pajero won the Dakar rally several times. Land Rover haven’t managed that yet!
12 times, most of any competitor.
@@Ciege classic range rover original winner of Paris Dakar rally 🇬🇧👍
We were too busy doing the camel trophies
The Dakar winning Pajero had very little in common with the models available in the showrooms at that time.
And yes they do hold 12 title's.
I own a 25 year old SWB Gen 2 in 2.8 diesel.
@@mazambane286 diesel is not for racing.. off-road racing is the petrol version. Dakar specs is 200 kilowatt while the 3.8 petrol is 184 very close
Really good review. The best car I ever had was my 2003 shogun 3.0 V6. It was unstoppable with the right tyres and so reliable. It's the one car I miss and would have another one in a heartbeat.
Same, had a 2001, it was terrific. Sadly, they stopped importing them to the US in 2006.
Nice to see a well rounded non biased comparison. Keep up the great videos
Thanks, will do!
I still drives a 2011 Pajero LWB, its not as refine but gets the job done and that's the point of having a 4x4. Mitsubishi came out with the controversial hybrid monocoque design of the Pajero around 1999/2000 and proves to be so much ahead of its time.
I have always been in two minds between Land Rover and Mitsubishi 4x4 wise. I think it’s going to come down to reliability. Great update.
Musical church organ fits in a Pajero or Shogun because of its rear entry ceiling height. I think the height is 1200mm. I owned 2 Pajeros, 2011 and 2018 and I will keep them for life, its a beast.
Wow its good to know you can get in the Pajero if you have a large organ ! not a problem i have !
In Australia, Defenders have terrible reliability and worse resale value. Pajero is much more reliable and popular.
Interesting !
It's sad to notice that Shogun/ Pajero is no longer in production.
But looking at the shape of the Defender, it looks like a polished Shogun.
Still a surprising number of old Shoguns/Pajeros in the rural area where I live. Easy to forget that they are over 30 years old now, the metallic paint on them still gleaming.
I have a 20yr old elegance auto. I use it daily. Had for 10yrs
Hello Simon, l love the shogun. As an old English man, I still don't get the metric system so thanks for the old measurement. Before I bought my range rover, I considered the shogun.
I had an imported one of these in c. 2003, black with lower section in dark grey. Solid bit of kit, the only thing I wasn’t so keen on was the automatic gearbox, but that would probably be the case with most at that time.
Fun fact:
Pajero means wanker in Spanish, so it’s known as the Montero in North/Latin America and Spain
Not being happy with the low bumper lights on my wife's Discovery 1, so I fitted a set of rear lights from a later discovery 1 so she now has two indicator lights each side and four rear side lights, it's gone through three CT test ( MOT ) and no problems out here in France, I am looking at ways to brighten up the lights on my RRC.
Hi guys great video.. can you tell me where dave got the engine tunned up and where did he get his winch from?
I have a 2015 shogun.. cheers.
Steve
Hi Simon great video, i have had a Pajero for just under 30 years now , rebuilt the engine this summer so it will do me for another few years, but it's very over engineered, ten bolts where two would do and there always seized .
Hi Paul - Yes I hear that often they have seized bolts
good video. i bought the pajero new in 2017. its a beast. great for Australia. King Pajero 👍🏼
THIS IS EXCELLENT, NATURAL PRESENTATION. BROTHER, THANK YOU.
So nice of you
Shogun all day
Simon, I'm not sure why your Defender door doesnt stay open. Perhaps the newer models have a new strut as mine stays put pretty rigidly. It certainly wouldnt blow closed in a wind and doesnt retract at all like yours.
IT'S PAJERO FOR ME !!! 😍🥰 THANKS FOR SHARING THIS WONDERFUL COMPARISON REVIEW 🤩
Its a good choice for many people !
It's an interesting comparison because there are those of us out there that don't have a budget that stretches to a new Defender but still require the ability of one.
The Shogun is a tried & tested design, for some that'll be reason enough to pick it over an overly complicated & expensive newer model.
Even something like a Volvo XC90, lovely car to drive but not terribly reliable by all accounts.
Vehicle lighting regulations, allow up to two pairs of rear indicators, only one set of forward facing indicators.
I'm wondering if the shogun name is related to Thomas Blake Glover, he helped in the development of Japan and helped start the business that would become mitsubishi, he is the only non Japanese person to be honoured with the title of shogun
Another good video ⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Simon. Another thing with the Shogun it is a 7 seater with the 3rd row low down in the boot i.e its stored totally flat..
Yes! Totally forgot it’s a 7 seater 🙈 (I own the shogun in this video).
@@thisirishcobcan Has the car been remapped or chipped as I am looking into getting mine done as well.
@@gordonbarclay7713 it was remapped.
I took mine out and used its space as storage for tools and wet weather gear. Put them in if needed.
@@geodrome That's what I have done.
Re. the offside indicator being obscured by the open tailgate - JLR's answer was to provide the warning triangle (look at the sticker on the tailgate 😉) Yeah, lame I know. 😂
Great review... thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I got all excited thinking you guys were now doing Pajero parts, I’ve a JDM one I’m doing up an exceed. I went to your website and there’s no Pajero section 😭
No - we were just out playing with friends !
EVERY car guy ......( if given the choice) ,,, whould go for the Mitsu keys..... EVERY TIME
I own a Pajero for 8 years, is a great car, that I bought brand new. Last year I changed for a Discovery 4, and it’s a hole world of difference. Pajero is great and I loved it, but you can’t compares it with the Discovery. The suspension is way better, the engine is more powerful, the internal space is more comfortable, the doble turbo makes it so fast and the 8 speed gear box makes the Land Rover so much better
I love Land Rover designs, but the cars are not durable like before. I had a beautiful Range Rover with “ugly” problems. Now I have Pajero, Frontier and Land Cruiser. Only japanese tanks.
Would it be possible to compare the Defender to George's Jimny?😊
We can do…. We have done this on TikTok being published tomorrow
Defender all day long😍👌
This is one of those I’d like either car but for me the MPG would be the deal breaker, any idea on mpg
The Shogun is mine. I tend not to look at the mpg! it is a 2+ ton car, the best I recall is around 28mpg when going steady on the motor way on cruise control. I enjoy driving it, so around town it’s much lower. Overall I think the mpg is very good considering all factors. You can find better mpg but probably not with 3.5 ton towing capacity.
@@djsconsulting it was more of a case of lower MPG means less fun time off road, I know it would never be a high mpg with anything 4x4, but I thought it might be slightly more than 28 though. very interesting though
Shogun MPG varies a lot from year to year depending on emissions class mostly. My 2011 Euro 5 will easily return mid 30s on a run. They are hardly eco warriors and always bad on short journeys but not bad. Contrary to what you'd expect the Euro 6 cars are much worse!
Shogun every time, I loved mine. Just rust killed it
RIP = Rust In Peace !
Shogun. The new defender is now a Chelsea tractor by intention like most other high priced 4x4s.
But the new Defender is invincible off road !
@@L663 doesn't invincible mean not breaking?
Pajero in Spanish is a swear word or derogatory term, they are called Montero in Spain, Shogan in the UK and Pajero in Oz.
A good comparison. Had a 2010 Pajero before changing to a disco 4 last year.
Was a reliable & comparatively cheap 4WD. Massive amount of boot space, only disco and landcruiser 200 series (double the price) could compare. Only letdown was the 5 speed gear box. Big shame Mitsubishi discontinued them.
If you enjoy Andrew’s comments about the defender then you should see what he has to say about the Pajero.
m.ruclips.net/video/vn10rNuMDi4/видео.html
Simon I see your comparing a $60k vehicle to a $25k vehicle, great work. Let’s compare at 10yr mark the reliability and depreciation value. Take true cost of ownership.
Compare your defender to a new basic Landcruiser, 4X4 and towing 3T with 4 people. That’s right your defender can’t tow 3T with 4 people due the LANDROVER hidden gvm degrading.
Another compare Ranger, Everest, Raptor etc.
There where problems with the Name Pajero in spanish Language as it means little horse 🐎. Some woman providing special service are called that.
Boom Boom!! 💥 The Stig!
Not celebrating Guy Fawkes in the US tonight then !
@@L663 Some ex Pat's do lol me not so much! Let's just say that I can be a liability when it comes to pyrotechnics and blowing things up! 😉
Would never buy a new defender,I like having a reliable truck 😊
Toyota ?
Mitsubishi need to pull a "Jimny".
If they went back to the Generation 2 style / drivetrain they'd be selling them again like hot cakes. I loved my short wheelbase Gen2 Pajero it had very little done to it (muds and a mostly cosmetic snorkel) and it went wherever you pointed it. I laugh at your modern dual zone climate control my shortie had a rear unit and controls as well although from what I recall I never bothered turned it on (I never understood why someone would have optioned that on a short wheelbase). That clicky lock on the rear door's been around since the start from what I recall as have those areas you can step on below the barn door. Eventually the oil from the dash binnacle inclinometer leaked out on you and the chassis rotted away to nothing because it was a great big lump of pig iron but that was the good thing about them you could bash them around off road and they laughed it off, the salt killed mine. Yeah I miss it from a certain POV but after the Pajero I got into the Jimny and I've been driving them ever since. I'm sure my wife would love a new Defender however I'm not so sure unless it was fully tricked out... and then I'd be terrified of bashing it. Thanks for all the videos guys great work!
The Jimny is great fun and I would not expect normal people to do what we do to the Defender - its worth far too much but we do it to promote the business and test our parts !
My choice would be Land Rover full options and adventure sets……to drop/pick up the kids at school, Mitsubishi to go on adventures without any worries…..but wait I don’t have kids anymore….🎉🎉🎉😂😂
Sadly the Defender is just a fashion statement, albeit a capable one. Living in rural Dorset, I wouldn’t swap my 2015 Shogun - new Defenders around here look ridiculous and out of place. I will keep our Shogun until it goes no further. Which, if looked after, will be a very long time. Even then, I’d rather have a Landcruiser than a Defender. Horses for courses.
Simon; how you do pronounce the Shogun marque? MIT SU BISH EE or MIT SU BUSH EE? Just saying. 🙊🤔👍🏻🙏🦘
Who cares - not important - just saying ….
Notice the word Mitsubishi is not on any of their vehicles.
Had a shogun, few series models of LR and a Range Rover, The shogun beats them all for reliability, suspect it will beat your new defender
I've got both. My Shogun simply doesn't come close to my Disco 4.
@@dipladonic it's my Shogun and I've had a 4.4 V8 Disco 3.
I agree the Disco 3 (or 4) is a nicer car but then at original list price you must be at least 20 or 30% more for the Disco compared to the Shogun.
For towing and off road I feel the Shogun is as good as my Disco 3.
For general "ambience" and comfort in the cabin I prefer the Disco 3 but only just !
Was also known as Mitsubishi Montero where I'm from..
Waiting for the usual suspects to appear. " Landover lost me with the new Defender" the Shogun was a great vehicle . But Mitsubishi don't offer anything anymore . They were pulling out of Europe a few years ago because nobody bought there vehicles. Meanwhile the Defender sells like hot cakes..?
Mitsabushi!
Mitsibuushi? 🤔
Pajeros two major letdowns are corrosion and timing chain guide issues on the 3.2 did. I bought a 2005 gen 3 lwb warrior a month ago and spent 4 weeks sorting the tin worm out and now have it in the garage pulling the engine apart as it ate the top and left side timing guides. We had a shogun sport in the family for years and although it was super thirsty (4d56 engine) it went wherever it was asked and never faulted until it was lent out and the wab that borrowed it blew the head gasket driving it like a tit and continued to drive it all week with it redlining the temp gauge thus destroying the engine. Id imagine this shogun with the super select will be even better in crappy low traction conditions. I owned a range rover and will never have another landrover product near me biggest dose of crap on the roads.
Mitsubishi pulled out of UK. My nearest dealer will become INEOS Grenadier dealer instead.
For me it's shogun♡
Think it was called the Shogun in Europe, in Spanish Pajero means "Jerk Off" so they obviously didn't want that on thier rear doors in Spain!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maybe you could try to find a Land Cruiser for comparison, see how they differ between the LR and Toyota.
shogun, because it'll make it more than a mile before it needs it's entire electrical system replaced
My heart says land rover 🇬🇧 but my head keeps telling me mitsi bomb proof reliability 🙈
A very bushy Shogun! 😂
One of the reasons they changed the name for Europe is that Pajero in Spanish can mean w**ker or to**er. I always thought it was an urban myth but it is actually true. On that basis you can understand why they changed the name.
I'm sure the shogun is called the Montero in Spain as Pajero means Wanker in Spanish. Imagine driving a 2 tonne wanker! Had a 2018 shogun loved it apart from the 21 mpg. Would love another
We call them the Montero is the US as well. Sadly, they don’t sell them here anymore, you still see a few of them around, but not too many unfortunately.
Papers not available anymore in Aus..pity 'cause it was a quality car. Engine and drive train is good albeit engine is noisy and auto is v old school. Grey nomads love them in Aus and they are hard to get 2nd hand in good nick. Replacement bitsamissin non Jap cars are not as good.
I was in Dubai recently and they still have some brand new in the showrooms. Must be some of the very last ones made - real shame they stopped production. A small upgrade with things like an 8 speed auto and I think there would have been an ongoing solid demand for Pajero's in some markets.
@@djsconsulting totally agree...but I guess economics overrules quality nowadays....look at the garbage out there eg. Rangers and the like..
Mitsubushi kills me 🙂
Pajero, is an offensive word in Spain, it related to a male act .. hence they called it shogun after shogun warrior
Yes who would have thought !
Ahhh….I can only dream of owning the Defender!
You can’t compare , a car which has not changed since 2008 to a 2021 vehicle … compare a 2008:defender to the mitsu …
fair point - but lets face it the Shogun holds its own even against the £50K new car !
It’s just a fun comparison of two different 4x4’s. We did the practical off road comparison and this was to compare the specs. It’s academic anyway as you can’t buy a brand new Shogun now but it’s a fair and interesting comparison of what you get with a £25k 5 yr old car compared to a £60k latest tech car!
Nope it was a Montero in N America , Spain and Latin America
pajero in spanish means wanker/tosser... think that's why we went with shogun over here.
Defender all day long
Shogun is so much better as a name than Pajero.
Don't know anything about the new Defender, other than it will probably be unreliable. But I had a Shogun like that and it was incredibly expensive to run, mile for mile. Suffered terrible corrosion. All repairs and parts were very expensive. Very unrefined, horrendously under powered engine - which you could forgive if it was economical on fuel, but it struggled to better 25mpg, 20 was more usual. The only thing I liked was the driving position.
Доброго здоров'я привіт з Одеси Україна.
None. A patrol y62 instead.
Pajero is a very good vehicle, however it is not good in terms of NVH, noise vibration harshness. In particular the dashboard shakes badly over rough and ricky services.
You can’t own this car in London as it’s going to cost you a fortune for the ULEZ
Its called shogun in Europe so not to upset the Spanish...as pajero in Spanish translated means ..wanker.. its called montero in usa Canada Mexico ext..
Who would have thought ! Language can be a funny thing sometimes..... I amazes me that Great Wall ( Chinese car maker ) launch a UK pickup call the "Winkle"
Why pay that money for the defender , why now just buy a Isuzu or Toyota better job
❤❤👋👋👍👍👌👌🙏🙏🇬🇧
so after all those years land rover did a worse less practical product.
Not sure I agree with that... Defender is a beast
Stupidly comparing an indestructible Pajero and a garbage Landrover that is in service 3 weeks a month. once a laddrover, never again! Pajero is a true off road
1 - Its Land Rover not Landrover
2 - Its Land Rover not Laddrover ! but i do like he concept of a "Lad Rover"
Mitsub-U-shi. funny.
Am that lost with landrover at the minute id have to pick the shogun. I own a disco 4 and used to own a disco 1 . Ive driven wolfs and snatch waggons all over the world . Since they ended the true defender they have truly lost there way
Landcruiser 4.7
Mitsubishi.....ffs.NOT BUSHI..........Mit....Su.....BISHI........what is so difficult..???
I stand corrected and humbled !
Pajero is not called a Pajero in Spain because to Pajer means to have a wa*k. True that. Though it’s not a word, in theory a Pajero is a wan*ker in Spanish
So the mountain cat would be a wanker in Spanish too?
Never buy any Land Rover product…….the build quality and electrics are a disgrace. Buy Japanese every time.
If value for money is the main criteria, Pajero throws discovery out of water at any given time.
