I have worn 3 different top hats over the course of 5 yeas and they are the best things to ever happen to my head. I dont care if top hats come back in fashion, I'm wearing mine anyway. Every day. For the rest of my life.
Personally, I would reserve the top hat for more serious and formal occasions so that it deems a certain respect within myself when combined with a full fig. ensemble. Reserve it for that and wear homburgs, fedoras etc. for other occasions (make sure to watch the Gentleman's Gazette's videos on these topics, very informative).
Great video, I have a felt black top hat that I found in Goodwill afew years back, paid like $1 for it, it isn't a costume item either it's from a company called "Linwood Avenue" glad I bought it, I wear it regularly now and get many complements on it. Sometimes you'd be shocked what treasures you can find for so little. Love my Top hat! :D
No,its more complex than that,a fedora is made out of felt body of wool, rabbit, beaver and many other fur, while top hat is made in a stiffened base of calico/linen that has been proofed in ammonia for 2 months and making a so called gossamer, then it was shaped on a topper block and then it was covered with a beaver pelt or an silk plush fabrics, while fedora was just a felt body that has been steamed and placed onto a hat block and shaped.
@@carltrotter7622it’s true that those top hats are shorter than average though; a typical top hat from the first half of the twentieth century would typically be around five and a half to seven inches from base to crown.

Well this about a decade late, but here's my unpopular opinion. The top hat is a formal hat, and as such should only ever be in black beaver plush, silk plush, melusine fur, or grey fur felt. The problem with these so-called "fashion top hats," is they cater to the unrefined and trendy, and create a bad image for something already seen as pretentious and old-fasioned in North America. Not to mention, now that the marketplace is flooded with inferior hats, and for someone who doesn't know better looking to dress up for a formal event, will likely buy a "fashion hat" in wool felt, or even worse, polyester felt. I like to say these inferior modern hats are something that wants to be a top hat, but aren't a top hat. Having said that, the only time a top hat is appropriate is for the morning dress and white tie dress codes which take style to pull off well. Those modern hats belong at Halloween parties or on the stage, or even better, in the garbage can. If you want a real hat, buy a vintage silk hat. You can likely find a hat in good shape for about as much as one of these modern "hats." That's what I think anyways.
I wholeheartedly agree, but as someone with a larger than average head, it can be extremely difficult to find a quality silk hat in the right size. I was lucky enough to find a plush hat in excellent condition with longer than average pile lengths for under $200, but it took a lot of searching and no short amount of luck. Most of the vintage hats on eBay being listed for affordable prices are smaller sizes (6 3/4 to 7). I also managed to get in contact with an expert in top hat restoration, who gave me a few tips and tricks on how to clean the delicate silk plush as well as cutting and sewing a new sweatband since the old one had deteriorated.
@@mossy8419 Ouch it's rough having a larger head size, but at least it sounds like you found something pretty reasonably priced! Oliver Brown in London sells refurbished top hats in large sizes, and if you haven't seen what they charge, take a look. It's absolutely ridiculous. Sweatband deterioration as well as brim binding and hatband replacement are fairly common jobs for vintage hats, and like you mention are usually things one has to do oneself if you live outside the UK. There was a guy on reddit claiming to be reverse engineering silk plush, and he hoped to be able to make some hats in a larger size with it, but not sure what the status is on that. I know some guys with larger hat sizes buy a modern melusine fur felt hat, but some are better than others. Darcy clothing in the UK sells a pretty convincing modern fur felt top hat with a long pile in larger sizes that's better than the ones from Christy's in terms of holding a shine. Not sure what it's like in terms of weight though compared to a vintage town weight hat.
@@TheRefinedGentleman I've actually gotten in contact with the same guy who's trying to reverse engineer silk plush. He's run into a few roadblocks because the process of making top hats would typically have been done by many people, each with their own specialization, and he still needs to secure some mills (though it seems that he has found a way to do it). He expressed interest into making an actual business out of it, and I can only hope he finds other experts to work with because otherwise the amount of labor involved would be completely unprofitable and inefficient. I was fortunate when I found the hat that fit me because the seller didn't include the hat's interior circumference in the listing, and only gave the major and minor axes when I asked him directly. I assume this deterred many would-be buyers who didn't want to go through the hassle of interacting with the seller on anything but the price. Amazingly, the original lining is still in great condition but has no maker's mark, which is something that the silk plush guy told me was the first he'd ever seen without one.
@@mossy8419 Well if he could make a business out of it, it would surely be a big deal, and he'd make bank in the leadup to Ascot with a more affordable modern top hat option that's still silk plush. There was a guy in the Netherlands about 10-15 years ago selling what he claimed were modern made silk plush hats, but it wasn't clear if he'd reproduced silk plush, found an old supply somewhere or was scamming people. When I was buying my vintage hat it was the same thing with the dimensions provided and I had to message the seller for the inside circumference. I got mine from a local antiques dealer, but that entailed walking about 12km in the middle of nowhere to reach their store. I saw an immaculate top hat a couple months back, in an antique store in my city a couple months ago for $125. It was complete with a hat box too. It fit me as well, and I probably should've got it as it was a steal, but I haven't been back since then so not sure if it's still for sale. The sweatband which was original felt brand new, so that's how good this hat was. Interesting there was no maker's mark. Mine is marked "Shelton, 12 Margate St. London" but I can't find much information about them, other than that they may have been an American maker based in the Northeast sometime between 1860 - pre mid 1900s. There is a 12 Margate Rd in London, England so I'm not sure if that's something related as well?
