How to Cut Dog Nails and Not Get Bitten Using a Dremel and Positive Reinforcement

  • How did I train my rescue dog, Mikey, to let me grind all his nails in 7 days?
He used to run away from clippers and was terrified of the sound of the dremel tool / nail grinder. He even started lip curling and growling at me if I tried to clip his nails with clippers! By using classical counter-conditioning I was able to change his emotional association of the sound of a nail grinder. Once that happened, it was just a matter of gradual desensitization and also making sure to progress slowly, and respect whenever he pulled his paws away.

I love the idea of using mealtime as passive counter-conditioning! Two other simple things that have helped me do nail trims with dogs are 1) making sure they're on a nonslip surface and 2) making sure there's plenty of bright light so I can see what I'm doing. Sounds common-sense but took me awhile to realize what a big difference it makes, lol. Thanks for this realistic approach to handling.

Excellent suggestions. Light is helpful for us so we can handle confidently. When we are quick and efficient I think we don't deplete our dogs patience while getting paws restrained and nails grinded or trimmed. In another video with my last Beagle, I use clippers and put her up on a crate with a yoga mat and that height and the light of the window helped me clip fast and confidently.

Genious! Ellie, my 19 month old Bernedoodle runs and hides in her kennel for anything to do with grooming, despite not having any negative experiences. (I'm the one who grooms her) But the nail trims is another level of fear or dislike for her. I will be trying this and for my Goldendoodle, who does not like it either but is compliant.

That's great! Many dogs, like your Bernedoodle and Goldendoodle, could benefit from a desensitization and counter-conditioning protocol on just the sounds and sights of the tools, and then the handling and eventual trimming. Slow and steady wins the race and you get a life time of easier, stress free, and even happy nail trims for your dogs!

This is a great, short, concise video that goes over all the steps. Cool that it only took a week. Have watched Susan Garrett's pedicure please, which takes a bit longer, so ty for this short version. She has a veterinarian on it who emphasizes the importance of short nails, especially if you do sports with your dogs. You know the dogs nails are long when they start biting them to have them cut. We have a local pet store that only charges 6.00 and some groomers actually have clinic days, like the first Saturday of every month for a few hours and all they do are nail trims at a reduced cost. This video will definitely help save some money as my sister pays 50.00/dog out in CA - just for a TNT. Hope this helps.

thanks for the share! Susan Garrett is an excellent trainer. We also have a local store that does nail trims at low cost, but I decided against that for two reasons. First, they use Clippers, and I think with dogs with thick nails, no matter how good the clippers are, it's a lot of pressure against the nail and it's unpleasant. That's why Mikey stopped letting me use clippers, and I had to move to a nail grinder/dremel. Two, Mikey LOVES strangers and people and I want to keep him feeling very positive towards strangers. I think that having him be restrained/clipped my a stranger would poison and contaminate his views of strangers and I want to keep him super loving of people.

Ohhhh my fluff, you're a genius puppy dad! I have a long hair chihuahua that's going to be 2 in June. Before I got her, I had a pitsky named Amazing Grace, she weighed 110 pounds and had to take her to the groomers for her nails. Only because I'm 70 years old. She went home to Jesus a year ago due to cancer at the age of 7. I've subscribed to your channel and sharing this to all my big dog lovers. Thank you for wisdom. God bless all the furbabies and those who love them

i have a lot of friends with very small dogs and cared for one that had only 3pounds for 3 months - he was like a big dog. very cool little guy. but i still was afraid that another dog could jump on him - 3 pounds is actually very vulnerable. but he was intelligent and had a great personality. when i am older and can no longer care for big dogs i will have a small one too - not that small but 8-12 pounds or so. @@maxinemcelroy8902

We have an American Staffordshire Terrier. He has been afraid of nail trimming ever since someone dropped him and we rescued him. His name is Rufus. This is going to make his nail trimming so much easier! Thank you!

Try it out! Take your time, just because it took me 7 days, doesn't mean you can't extend every step to however many days it takes Rufus. The key is he runs to dremel tool, and you go at a pace where he doesn't struggle. Taking your time early means a lifetime of happy and easy nail grinding!

I have one of those, only female. I have her lie down, rub her tummpy a little, get a treat and lay it down where she sees it. She knows if she holds still while I trim her nails, that's her reward. She never gives me trouble.

Yep, it's by Casfuy on Amazon. The reviews said Quiet and it is really quiet! For dog nail trims, quiet is helpful and the bright light helps me see.

Great video! The step by step breakdown is super helpful. I’m working on desensitizing my dogs to the Dremel sounds but it’s taking a long time, over a month now. Looking forward to more videos. Just a note, it seems like you are looking off to the side in the video rather than straight ahead; you might be looking at the camera display rather than the camera lens?
