    I've followed a pretty much similar path. I'm currently making one with my brother as the artist. Writing for movies is just so hard to get in the mindest of if your world already isn't in the industy. And jeez there isn't a way to visualize your stories better or quicker than handing a script to a talented artist

As of late I have trying to nail down a pilot script but Ive always considered adapting it into a comic first before seeing if it can be turned into a show. Once again, I appreciate the video and making these kinds of projects feel more attainable.

    I was kinda thinking this had similarities to Horatio Hornblower, and now I know why! This looks amazing! I’m excited to finally read this comic when it comes out.
    Also I have a question for Jason, I was wondering what your process was for making backgrounds? especially for locations that don’t have Visual indicators that show readers what Direction they're looking at (like a forest or a Desert).
    Thank you!

    • @jasonpiperbergillustration7770
      @jasonpiperbergillustration7770 6 месяцев назад +2

      That's a great question! For most of my backgrounds I'll start by laying in a perspective grid even for scenes like forests and deserts. I work digitally so I overlay these grids on top of my rough thumbnail sketch before moving to the pencils/inks. This helps me visualize how things are supposed to recede in space, even if I'm not following the lines of the grid exactly.
      So for a desert scene, if you're using lines rather than painting, I'd pay attention to the line thickness in order to create the illusion of depth. Anything further away from the "camera" will have a thinner line than anything closer to it. The horizon line would be thinner than anything in the foreground, like say lines indicating ripples in the sand or maybe sparse vegetation, an animal skull, etc.
      There are a lot of great RUclips videos on this topic. Look up atmospheric perspective. But you can also take a close look at any of your favorite artists and really dissect how they are constructing scenes like this. Overlapping objects can also help. Like having that animal skull crossing over the horizon line in a low angle shot or something.
      For the rough sketch itself I mostly just eyeball things. But the trick is to remember that you're trying to convey the illusion that things are receding in space.
      I hope that helps!

    I’d have a question for Jason: as someone hoping to get into the artistic process, what programmes would you recommend for scanning, converting, lettering and colouring?
    (For someone starting out).

    • @jasonpiperbergillustration7770
      @jasonpiperbergillustration7770 6 месяцев назад +2

      Good question! I work almost entirely digitally at this point but when I scan traditional pieces I think I usually just use Apple's Image Capture app and my Epson flatbed scanner. One thing to keep in mind with scanning is that you should scan in no lower than 300dpi. I usually go 450 or 600 to really preserve image detail. Greyscale is fine for black and white art.
      I adjust that scan in Clip Studio Paint EX which is my go to art app. I switched over to it from Photoshop in 2014 and never went back. I just really love the brush engine, for drawing and coloring (when I color my own stuff), and I do the bulk of my lettering in it too. Although I wouldn't recommend it if you're primarily doing lettering only. In that case, I'd suggest Adobe Illustrator, or Affinity Designer if you'd rather not pay Adobe's subscription fee. I've been using Affinity instead of Adobe for a few years now and it's totally capable, imo. Clip Studio's lettering tools are good, but the text tool specifically is a little clunky. But It works for me and it's been improved recently.
      Some other good apps affordable are: Procreate, Affinity Photo (Affinity's Photoshop)
      There are even some free ones like Krita which I haven't used a ton, but seems like a decent option.
      Hope that helps!

    My question for jason is how do you do such fantastic line weight with your inking? How did you develop or practice those skills?

    • @jasonpiperbergillustration7770
      @jasonpiperbergillustration7770 6 месяцев назад +2

      Hey, thank you!! The general answer is it's a lot of practice, and looking at other people's work that I really admire and trying to incorporate some of their techniques. One thing that I try to keep in mind when dealing with things like environments, or crowd scenes, is that subjects in the front of the scene near the "camera" will usually have thicker lines, and subjects further away will have thinner and sometimes even broken lines. This keeps things from flattening out. This actually still holds true when dealing with close ups. I try to make the lines for the overall head shape and hair a bit thicker than the ones for the eyes, nostrils, wrinkle's etc.
      Also always keep light source in mind. lines can be thinner the closer they are to a light source and thicker the further away they are. I've also found that it's good to keep a looser grip on your pen, brush, stylus, or whatever it is you're inking with.
      I work digitally, so I'm always trying out new brushes, and textures. This issue was largely inked using brushes I made that are in my textured inkers and scruffy pencils brush set, but also some from Ray Frenden, DAUB, and True Grit Texture supply. If you're interested, here's a link to my brushes. jasonpiperberg.gumroad.com
      I have some speed drawing videos on my (super tiny) RUclips Channel as well as my IG @JasonPiperberg, if you want to see how I work.

      Off the top of my head?
      Love & Rockets, there’s a lot of it, almost all is worth your time.
      Alan Moore is obvious, but people should really explore beyond Watchmen and Killing Joke. I especially like From Hell.
      Eastman and Laird’s original TMNT run are filled with so much passion and excitement, those are great (as well as the recent Last Ronin stuff).
      Darwyn Cooke’s Parker graphic novels (starting with The Hunter) are incredible. Cooke was a monumental talent.
      Blankets is great.
      For something really recent, I’m loving Titan’s new Conan the Barbarian, which really harkens back to the ‘70s Savage Sword of Conan). Both well worth reading.

      @@captainmidnight It really depends on what you are looking for. The classics are
      -L'incal: weird Moebius Jodorowsky sci-fi. Think Dune but more drugs. And the Metabaron cast which is a spin-off is basically a sci-fi tragic opera.
      -The works of Enki Bilal: Nikopol trilogy, Black order phallanx, Hunting party (this one is truly great and would make such a good film)
      -Blacksad: one of the most visually
      beautiful you will ever see in your life if your mind has not been polluted by the knowledge of the existence of the furry community.
      -Jaques Tardi C’était la guerre des tranchées. Myabe the most powerful representation of WW1 I have ever seen
      -The Rabbi's cat Johann Sfar: This one is special but very cleverly written.
      -Corto Maltese: a graphic and narrative classic
      -Blueberry: Western/Civil war, beautiful
      -Blake and Mortimer: old thriller and mysteries for the young usually science fiction of magic with a lot of military prospective. (Maybe "Yellow M" to begin? It is iconic)
      -XIII: Basically a more complex Jason Bourne in a Kennedy-like assassination.
      -Largo Winch: Also a crime mystery where you follow a man that came out of knowhere to inherit the largest fortune in the world and of course spaeks some jealousy.
      -the Killer: It's better than the recent Fincher movie
      -Tintin, Asterix, Spirou: intended for children but entertaining nonetheless. Maybe more if it's your childhood read of course.
      -Esteban: lesser known coming of age meets Moby Dick
      -Idées noires by Franquin is very visual and weird but an interesting experience.
      -Riad Sattouf and Guy Delisle both write some beautiful portraits and autobiographies with simple drwings of their experiences in different parts of the world.
      There are so many more. It really depedns on the subject that interests you. You have Historical fiction, alternate history (Jour J), fantastical or fantasy in History... You can also try anthologies like 7, there are many like it. Basically the same team writes a stand-alone story with sometimes a new writer and always a different artist. 7 has a common thread that every story involves 7 characters in a story whatever the theme or subject. It can go from horror to comedy or science-fiction. Jour j (D-day) takes the same concept but every album explores a new alternate history scenario with new characters and a classic plot inside this universe: a war, heist, thriller, espionnage, trial...
