I successfully found all the fabrics I needed to make this quilt (from a variety of quilt shops) and analyzed the pattern carefully to consider how to orient the fabric when cutting shapes. Helpful tip: when cutting the triangles (for the diamonds), do not assume all will have mirror images. I spent time looking at each picture of each section to count how many of these triangles I needed. Some are only left facing. Other fabrics are right facing and the remainder have mirror images. It took me days to cut all the fabric but it’s well worth it.
spiritinthesky28 I wish I had seen this post before I cut everything out.. so far 60 of my triangles are waste and need to be re-cut, and that’s only checking the blue wavelets, blue rigging, and blue jolly stripe fabric 😔
This is one of the most beautiful quilts using the Stom at Sea templates that I have EVER seen. I absolutely love the changes in color and usage of patterned fabric. In an unusual way, this quilt reminds me of artist & animator, Mary Blair, and the designs she made for Disneyland’s It’s a Small World. I just bought the pattern and hope to make this one day. I will need your advice. “It’s a journey, not a race:” “Take your time and enjoy the process.”
You can find this pattern on Janets website along with fabric, I bought the pattern only. It's a really nice quilt, I cut out everything and put every part in a clear food bag with the number of each fabric in the bag. Its a nice process, very relaxing to do.
Just purchased the fabric to make this quilt, it's sooo beautiful, I love the whales and do savour every moment of the process, as Janet said. It's going to be an epic quilt but will be finished sooner or later. Anyone doing it in Italy?
Omg! after cutting out the triangles at 4/12 Trying to assemble.. what a sad thing the light blue with the dark blue boats do not stand up as in picture they go sideways so the pattern is good color wise but not pattern wise and I thought this would have been my swan song sooo sad 😢😔cannot get this material anywhere 😢😢😢
Hey Bridget!Good question! No, you don’t need to cut opposite directions for non-directional fabrics, but if you’re on the fence about a certain print, test it out first to see how it looks before cutting all the triangles.

If you don't use directional fabric do you still have to cut your half squares in opposite directions?
