  • A complete playthrough of JVC's 1991 NES game, Star Wars.
    The ending shows the game as 100% complete.
    Given how much Battletoads' notoriety relies on its insane difficulty level, I'm surprised that this game isn't often mentioned in the same vein. I actually found this one more difficult than Battletoads, especially the flying sections and that final area with all of the jumping tubes and spikes - argh. It requires a pretty heavy memorization effort to get though, I promise.

      Also died quite a bit too.

    It may not be quite a "classic", but JVC (well, Beam) managed to piece together quite a respectable showing for A New Hope on the NES. It's fairly faithful to the movie, most of the iconic music tracks are here, and the play is super smooth. And also like the SNES versions, you're likely to pull your hair out before you manage to beat it. Great game!

      This game is an amazing classic in my book. No NES game ever showed such variety, colorful graphics and tight designs while the gameplay was solid. All combined in a challenging but doable package with a strong 8-bit score.

    My first exposure to Star Wars was riding Star Tours at Disneyland as a six year old, then loving that so much that I begged my parents to get me this game on my NES. And then after having no idea who most of the characters were or what the story was about, I finally watched the Original Trilogy over a weekend on VHS.
    All that aside, this game was super hard, esp. once you get on the Death Star. I resorted to using the Game Genie just so I could make it to the end. But the 8 bit versions of the classic John Williams' cues are great. Also love the final rail shooter stages in the Falcon and in Luke's X-Wing,

    In the space scenes, did you have to shoot down so many Tie Fighter's to finish the level? These scenes were the toughest to get through. I got the game over Christmas 1992 and didn't beat it till 94 or 95.

    • @FlorisDVijfde
      @FlorisDVijfde 2 года назад +1

      In most playthroughs I see they just fire at all the green missiles to survive for 2,5 minute. There's apparantly like 40 TIES to shoot down so guess you should play defensively and hang in there. Only the first two waves are easy pickings. But pause button can help to do it in parts. As a kid I got very good at this game. The difficulty just meant more game time it was the best birthday present of my life.

    • @FlorisDVijfde
      @FlorisDVijfde 3 года назад

      @mrmegarock58 The game was designed not to need saves since you can finish it within an hour. Plus most emulators have a save function. I finished the game several times when I was a kid. If you struggled too much with Alderaan's asteroid field, you can collect more shields for the Falcon first. So sad to see so many struggle with classics nowadays. I've gotten older and have more difficulty with games like this, but it still gives a nostalgia boner. I loved the level designs and 8-bit tunes. A very underrated game nowadays.
