Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche has done very extensive research about this, he is not Bönpo, so you could trust that he will not have a biased idea. You could find answers in his books about that, or you could contact Bönpo teachers to get a better insight.

A minimum of 15 minutes of Shamatha or Mantra practice is required each day, otherwise spiritual degeneration will ensue. No one ever fails. It is slow in the beginning and rapid later on. When the effects of practice mature, the explosive manifestation of energy and awareness is inevitable. The results of spiritual practice is automatic. Endless theory is not required to produce enlightenment. At some point, the intellect will block your spiritual progress. And that too must be let go of.

In indonesia there are stories of people and non-human entities whose past-life were practitioners of black magic. All of them did not want to practice black magic anymore though it was easier for them to re-learn. They said it wasn't worth the karma. One became a hungry ghost for hundreds of years, then be a sparrow, then be a single mother who was constantly abused by men.
