  • Prof. Matthew Goodwin, Professor of Politics at the University of Kent and a commissioner of the Social Mobility Commission, addressed the New Culture Forum's spring conference, which was held in Birmingham in April 2023. He argues that Britain is in the grip of a new elite, which has been rapidly losing touch with the rest of the country, setting the stage for a looming backlash among the masses.

I suppose Marxist ideology functioning within global capitalism is simply another version of capitalism. It could not work the other way around - global capitalism could not function in a Marxist regime.
The 'Elites' are happy to live with a certain amount of cognitive dissonance. They are happy to endorse Marxism so long as they continue being elite. I suspect that if their 'privileged' positions and lifestyles start being compromised they would rapidly drop the Marxist bit.

I live by and work with the educated elite identified in the lecture (Oxford) and it is a pretty accurate description of that "class" of people. One thing I would add is their exposure to people from other, very different cultures is skewed also - they mainly meet the educated and talented people from those countries that are working and studying here. That is their perception of immigration. And, as Orwell rightly identified, they are somewhat perpetually embarrassed about their own culture, always in thrall to some other culture.

These have politicians by the short and curlies. Whatever they say to get in power is nullified once there, as they find that their hands are tied. Even if they want to, for example, 'stop the boats' they either find that they are not permitted to as their gov is tied into letting them in, or they see the economics of the nation and have to continue to serve the addiction to cheap labour. They have absolutely no care for the abominable ramifications of such immigration.

A problem with the term 'elite' is it reinforces the impression of many in the university-educated, professional class that the ideology with which the majority of this class associate themselves is somehow 'correct' or 'right' because it must be the product of superior thinking, as they themselves consider themselves superior and the majority of this superior class seem to agree with the ideology. In not wanting to seem out of place or to out themselves as 'less intelligent' there is social pressure to conform. The reality is the ideology is promoted by a relatively small number of committed ideologues and enforced through, frankly speaking, intimidation. The non-ideologues either pretend to agree, or convince themselves they agree, because it's in their self-interest to agree.

    Dear (Tory) MP,
It is known that Tony Blair deliberately let into the UK a large number of immigrants in the belief that the immigrants would vote for Labour because Labour would promise to tax the indigenous population to benefit the immigrants. This would give the Labour Party a majority of parliamentary seats in perpetuity.
The continuing large annual immigrantion numbers since the Brexit vote of 2016 under Conservative Party governments appears not to be due to incompetence, but instead, a deliberate policy to run the UK economy on low-wage immigrant labour.
As Edmund Burke, the founder of Conservatism, observed: a nation consists of a bond from generation to generation. Previous generations intend for their children to inherit their parent's nation, not foreigners who cuckoo-like will immigrate into the nation.
World War 2 was fought by an alliance of peoples to end all empires, to enable all peoples of the Earth to live freely, homogeneously, in their ancestral lands, as self-governing nation-states, able to participate in worldwide commerce by trading with ports not restricted to empire trade.
Yours bitterly disappointed with the Conservative Party,

I am Venezuelan, socialism has caused more than 8,000,000 Venezuelans to emigrate out of a population of 32,000,000, we are a country with oil, gold, coltan, gas, iron, coal, aluminum... and we don't have to eat, school teachers are protesting a salary increase, they earn 8 dollars a month and the basic food basket costs 500 dollars a month, we don't have gasoline, and all the gold and coltan are taken by the Russians and the Chinese and everything It is deliberate, the economy councilor Giodani said "the political floor is given to us by the poor people, hence the defense of the poor", but he also said that in order to achieve social change, the mentality of the people must be changed and that redistribution of wealth has to wait until this mentality change occurs, "the poor should continue to be poor, we need them like this, poor but hopeful".

No, it's in the grip of Corporatism. With socialism the people (public) own the country's resources such as water, energy, housing etc. In Corporatism (monopoly capitalism), the shareholders of huge corporations own everything.

These are essential talks and we should be able to watch the speakers free from the ubiquitous photographers. Would it not be better for the viewer if there could be a photoshoot before the talk and not during. It would also be more professional not to interrupt the viewer's attention throughout the discussion. Thank you. Keep talking, we're listening.

Tony's idea of 75% school leavers going to university, being the trail of success. I recently retired, after working 52 years as an electrician. On my last day at work, a snooty graduate , (in sociology, she told me) looking down her nose at me carrying a toolbox, and asked me to use back door. I told her to call another electrician, and went home

This presenter is actually spot on. I've even seen feedback in universities on the quality of research that has ignored great research impact purely down to its source. In other words, because it was from what the evalutors deem to be not a diverse enough range of researchers its somehow not good quality or could never be world leading. This of course is absolute nonesense. If the research has impact and will help create a better society, then where it came from become irrelevant.

The Left thought they'd finally won for good in 1997 when Tony Blair won a landslide. Then we voted to leave their Socialist Utopian pipedream (the EU) and they were absolutely shocked. It wound them up so much and they'll *never* get over it. Instead of trying a bit of introspection, and understanding why they lost, they've convinced themselves that it must've been some kind of fluke/stitch-up/con-job/magic trick. So they've now come to the resolution that *anything* is justified to make sure they win the culture war, even if it includes violence, bullying, intimidation, dishonesty and coercion.

I knew these people. I went to Manchester University mid 80s and lived in Chorlton. Didsbury is another similar suburb. Despite getting in the university you may be surprised to know that they were very stupid. They were out of touch with many aspects of the real world. They used to drink a huge amount and fool around. The stuff they were taught was rather twisted too. You had militant feminist groups distributing leaflets warning of dangerous men who were sexual predators and kind of like the classic bogeyman concept. Orwell had it right with his depiction of the Junior Anti-sex League. The young women were most mailable towards the party agenda.
