- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. James Deakin is a Filipino born to a Filipina and a British man. He spent grew up in the Philippines, before leaving at age 14 to migrate to Australia. He came back 12 years, became a DJ, drank a lot of beer; and eventually joined a group of guys to set up a car enthusiast magazine, which led to a gig hosting a TV show called Auto Extreme in 2002; and then a weekly column in the Philippine STAR’s motoring section. All these conspired to prepare him to deliver this surprisingly personal, revealing and inspirational talk about how to get people to give to charity.
James Deakin hosts currently a radio show and a weekly podcast about cars. He is also the man responsible for organizing "Operation Hatid", a volunteer-driven initiative that enabled thousands of families who lost their homes to find comfort and solace in the arms of relatives and loved ones in the aftermath of supertyphoon Haiyan.

He stop giving money to charity because he is giving the charity for his skills and talents and use them to other people for helping the needy ones, the more people who help someone the better. :)
I think this is the best video on charity I've ever seen so far. It's the most right thing to do because you are giving directly and giving now to the people that need it most and it's sacrificing your own resources which is very charitable.

I like reading everyone's comments, but what I'm gathering is more of a debate. I'm not here to pick a side. It's more about taking charity away from being institutionalized, and moving it to grassroots movements to do the things you want to do (care) as opposed to doing it out of guilt or impulse donation (which is also guilt). In short, you do more when you care than when you just put money in an envelope and never see full breadth of impact (smiles, stories, gratitude). To conclude: do it yourself charity.
Not everyone has the time to build their own charity.

Well, I don't understand, why you couldn't do both? Giving money for charity is better than not giving money at all, and using your creative self to raise money and help is also a good way to help.

Not everyone is wealthy enough to feed their own charity on their income alone. There are MANY great causes that are NOT based on YOUR 3 fundamentals AND consider the charity that helped you through life... food for thought James~

He stopped giving money to charity - why? Because he started doing his own charitable actions? His whole taxi service only worked because those people he drove around gave money to his charity. I understand the "appeal to people's self interest" idea, but I don't understand not giving to charity.
I haven't stopped giving, bro. I still give to charity. I give a piece of myself, which raises more money than I alone could give.

James Deakin I tip my hat to you. For a long time I donated money to charities for various issues. I never felt like a better person or saw individuals around me benefit from my donations. One day I had the same thought. To give to people in need directly. To give these people a piece of myself. I feel so much more enlightened when I see clothes I've given away being worn or a car I helped fix on the side of the road, drive a family home. I think that it is great you use your fame to help benefit others by reaching out to followers.
+thunduhboss I get your point. But if you give to a reputable charity that really helps those in need that's another story. You can tell a good charity from the bad one is through their advertising. The more glamorous, then you will know it is not a good 1.

Charity comes in many form, not just money.
People don't have that e all the time.
The point is help others.
Salvation Army is the last great organization. Almost every penny goes where it should. Almost all volunteer

What you're doing to help improve things around you is commendable but imho you used a hook that is unintentionally unfair to organizations that rely on charitable giving to help the needy. Charity allows people who have had a tough break, like you yourself experienced, to get a meal for a day so they can still fight tomorrow, get medication, shelter, skills training, or even someone to talk to over a helpline who will encourage them hang in there. Perhaps not everyone has the physical or logistical means to help but they can spare a few pesos. It's their way. That act is helpful in a tangible way.

Someone should tell James Deakin not everyone has Taipan contacts and celebrity friends. His talk doesn't apply to the majority of people. Personally, I buy school supplies and deliver it to schools firsthand on my dad's pick up truck. When Covid hit, I delivered tablets instead. According to mr. Deakin, I "only tapped 10% of my capability to give". I wonder where he got that figure but as soon as he said that I knew this talk would be worthless. I just stayed for the laughs.
I give to charity. Kaya lang iniinspect ko muna kung legit ba. Kung napupunta ba talaga sa beneficiaries or sa bulsa nung may-ari. Mostly sa Catholic ako nagbibigay, run by priests and nuns. Hindi sa born again. Kasi materialistic mga born again. Sabihin na nating nag-Starbucks si Sister pero hindi naman ganun kagarapal. Ang gusto ko suportahan mga disabled, batang may cancer, matanda sa nursing homes, indigenous tribes, ung talagang cut off sa sistema. Pero kung malakas ka naman, bakit kailangan mo pa magpaawa? Americanized kasi ako eh. I believe in home loans, student loans, 2-3 jobs. I don't support Housing because like Kadamay. Gusto mo ng bahay mag-PAGIBIG ka. Gusto mo mag-aral, scholar din ako nung College. Mag-working student ka sa fastfood. Mga kaklase ko ganun. I don't support education, housing. I support mga orphanage, hospitals for poor people. I don't support political advocacies.
There is a finite amount of money in the world. When one person becomes rich, they are taking a disproportionate amount of money for themselves, and that money comes from others. The more rich people there are, and the richer those rich become, the more poor everyone else becomes. It's mathematical certainty. Wealth is literally the cause of poverty. Sad to see wealthy people doing all kinds of mental gymnastics to avoid the guilt they should be feeling.

I think he is missing the point of charity, with compassion, guilt and obligation - rather charity should be fundamentally surrounded around a heart of selflessness, understanding that others are less fortunate.
230 000 pesos is 12 000 dollars which is less than the 20 000 dollars he was going to give from his own pocket in the first place. like many tedX talks this seems to be a self glorification talk.
