The mid is great to escape bad weather, that's for sure. And with long winter nights it provides ample space to relax as well; I can't really do that in my Notch.
You have some beautiful fall foliage in the area...I enjoy tramping through the leaf litter as it really gives me the feeling that I am enjoying my favorite time of year...thanks so much for sharing the tranquility...
It's certainly a nice time of the year. This weekend looks even better with no rain predicted. Would be nice to get out there again with all this colour. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Brian. Lovely to see all the locations you visit here in Denmark. My todo list is getting longer all the time. Have had my eyes on a lot of the gear you are trying out, especially the shelters we have a lot in common. I recently made a Ray Way inspired tarp for two... that was a joy (think the borah 7x9 with beaks at the end). Keep up posting these wonderful videos, hope to meet you on trail. Anders
Thanks Anders, I really appreciate your comment. Defiantly say hi if you see me on trail, I always seem to wear nearly the same gear and people who have seen my videos recognise me straight away. Sounds exciting with the DIY projects; I'm not much good at that but I envy the folks that can.
Thank you Alan for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed the video. I've been using both the Windrider 2400 and 3400 backpacks for the last 5 years. I'm happy with the Hyperlite products. Hope you receive your 4400 soon 🙂
Enjoyable channel! I am going to buy the ultamid from hmg for myself. I am quite tall at 6.3 feet, and have huge feet. Do you think i would fit in the half inner ? Without having problems touching the mesh in the head and feet ends of the tent ? In almost all tents with aprox the same length i have problems, but since this pitches so high, the walls looks a bit more vertical than a lower standard freestanding tent. It looks like it could fit tall persons. If not i will get the ultamid 4 at 2.43 length, much thanks to your vids! keep up posting great videos :)
Thank you for watching and commenting Kim! I did a terrible demonstration about the Half Insert here showing how much room there is in it: ruclips.net/video/PusYIJ_W4vQ/видео.html Not sure if you read my review here: brianoutdoors.blog/2020/08/29/hyperlite-mountain-gear-ultamid-2-ultralight-pyramid-tent/ I also have the Full Insert which I use when we are two people, but a tall person would fit easy into it diagonally. As far as the Half Insert goes the dimensions are: Width: 34” | 86.4cm // Length: 92” | 233.7cm // Height: 44” | 111.8cm You are 6 feet 3 inches, what is that, about 75 inches? The figures suggest that you would fit, but I think that it might be a bit cramped for you after I look back on my Half Insert video. I mention Ken Shaw below. He also did a video on the HMG Ultamid 2: ruclips.net/video/v6_xJ4R6Rj4/видео.html The video shows him using the tent without any inner tent. He is 190 cm long. You should look at these Sarek Gear Mid tents as well: sarekgear.se/talt/ The guy who designed these tents, Ken Shaw, is tall too. He is 190 cm long. He did a video here: ruclips.net/video/S960m3lzEPw/видео.html They are a small company in Umeå, Sweden. He also owns the backpackinglight.se/ shop. He also makes the inner tents now too. Like you say, you could also go for the HMG Ultamid 4 model. Hope this all helps you in making a decision. Regards Brian
@@BrianOutdoors I have to say i am impressed by your answer :) thank you! It really did help alot. I would have bought the sarek but it was out of stock. Seems like a great company. Backpackinglight is also great ! :) i am really glad for the video with the inner. I think i can make it work by making some adjustments to it. Even though i am 193 cm. Atleast i got the 2. Again thank you for your time! Keep up posting great content ! :)
Brian, how do you like the HMG Ultramid 3 compared to your Tarptent Notch Li? I realize the HMG is 2 person so more room but other than that how do they compare? (I have the Notch Li, gen 2 with the door zippers, like yours.)
Hi Eric, the Ultamid 2 is nearly double the weight including the ½ insert but it is great in wet weather. I can sit on one side and prepare & eat my food and keep out of the rain. In the evenings before going to bed I can keep dry there too. Lots of room to through my wet gear etc. They are basically two completely different shelters. I've published a review about it on my blog here: brianoutdoors.blog/2020/08/29/hyperlite-mountain-gear-ultamid-2-ultralight-pyramid-tent/
I've not seen this tent before. Which do you prefer, the HMG or Zpacks? I own the latter in soloplex, but was thinking about upgrading to a 2 person tent for both myself and my husband.
I use the Ultamid 2 either by myself with the half inner or with the full insert if we are two people. Spreading the weight out between two it's a pretty light shelter. I've written a review about the Ultamid 2 here: brianoutdoors.blog/2020/08/29/hyperlite-mountain-gear-ultamid-2-ultralight-pyramid-tent/ I've also written about the Duplex here: brianoutdoors.blog/2018/07/14/zpacks-duplex-tent-review/ Gossamer Gear have also come out with a 2 person DCF shelter now as well: www.gossamergear.com/collections/shelters-sleeping-pads/products/dcf-of-the-two I can't really compare the two because they are really two completely different shelters with their own pros and cons. The Duplex is only single wall so if you are two people and there is condensation then your quilt or sleeping bag will get wet if it hits the wall. Zpacks make a Triplex too which would give a bit more room. Hope this helps?
Looked like a good spot, Brian. Were you in Nørreskov? Did you come across many other people camping at this time of year? As I live in CPH, this would be such an easy place to come and experiment with different shelters etc. Also, are you able to make a fire?
Yes Jim, that's correct, it was Nørreskov. The last two camps I've been finding locations away from the official campsites on the side of the lake. You can find locations up the embankment away from other people. The whole forest is wild camping permitted. There seems to be a lot of people out here now after covid restrictions. The official campsites marked on the map below are over used, boggy and full of folk's poop. www.alltrails.com/explore/map/fureso-loop-379a7ba?u=m But if you want to light a fire then stick to these campsites so you don't make any new firepits in the forest. The colder it gets it will be easier to find a vacant site as the "weekend campers" won't want to stay overnight.
@@BrianOutdoors Great info Brian and much appreciated! Hoping that it stays reasonably dry this weekend so I can go up there with my son for a night. Thanks again for the info.
Seek s lightweight tent with an expansive awning to use a ground level micro beach canvas chair or linger right at the tent inner and outer entry/exit when the dew is heavy or light rains are active, or ability to expand light gear cooking platform or spread out muddy wet clothes. gear etc is preferred And an awning with perhaps side flaps that roll down or up as deemed appropriate Maybe the awning is an “add” somehow and therefore, not always packed or used depending or type of trip, weather etc Thoughts🤔 Granted, the two awning corners would need two lightweight poles thus more weight , more gear to carry, etc
Hi Finn, try to check out the Sarek Gear DCF shelters. There are three different models. The inner is positioned at the back of the tent so you can have the "awning" up in rain weather. backpackinglight.dk/tents/one-person-tent/sarek-gear-the-mid-1 Here you can see the awning in action. ruclips.net/video/Hrj7cWsRRQY/видео.html Hope that helps?
what is the height of your trekking pole when you set up your ultamid? I saw people using 2 trekking pole upside down but your video it only showing one trekking pole.
I set the pole height at 64“ (163 cm). In this video I'm using one Luxe Outdoor pole tube extender T-45 (62 grams) and one Luxe Outdoor carbon fiber trekking pole (135 cm) which weighs 185 grams. Luxe Outdoor also have a T-32 (48 grams) which will join two Luxe Outdoor trekking poles together. I have been unable to purchase a T-32. However, I feel the one pole solution with the T-45 is safer if one trekking pole breaks on a long trip somewhere in the mountains. Sometimes I use two trekking poles together with the HMG pole straps as well like you have seen others using.
This was a peaceful clip, thanks! How soon does it get dark over there? It's pitch dark at around 6PM over here, so need to find camp preferably real early to avoid camping in random bushes...
Thanks! The sun was going down around 16:30 but I guess that it was about the same here last weekend. I had dinner around 18:00 and I needed my headlamp turned on by that stage to see. The moon came out too and just before it started raining at 18:30 it disappeared behind the clouds.
I still feel a mid is the best all-around shelter. I agree with dehydrating your own meals---much tastier, cheaper, and higher quality ingredients.
The mid is great to escape bad weather, that's for sure. And with long winter nights it provides ample space to relax as well; I can't really do that in my Notch.

What a calming setting. Very beautiful. You're a Hyperlite guy for sure. Waiting on my 4400. They're so backed up right now.
