Very nice! Foil, mesh, staples and mastic... impressive. I've got an apprentice I'm trying to untrain from some knuckleheads that taught him that foil tape and mastic are a good recipe. We just changed out an evaporator coil that was installed that way and I literally tore off a continuous 48" piece of foil and mastic joining the furnace and transition to the evap coil. I told him that if I came back to QA/QC a job that I sold and someone did it that way, they get ONE MULLIGAN and the privilege of me checking every job for the next 30 days. Any further excursions, the tech will come back and do it right and receive minimum wage for the training while they do it.

I that part where you say PAY ATTENTION.hahah. You should be commended for having to do that with a hard hat on that didn’t fall off. I have been trying to enforce wearing hard hats for 8 years and the ac guy is only one that said he can’t wear one. Well done

So for every cut you make you have to add an extra 5/8 of an inch and how much should I leave for the overlap of foil paper 4 inches is enough

This is how you make any duct box, the use is up to you. Plenum, return, trunk line, etc.

im still a little confused though could you please help me out I HAVE 1" 1/2 RED TOOL AND 1" 1/2 BLUE TOOL IF FOR EXAMPLE I NEED TO MAKE A 20X20 PLENUM HOW MUCH DO I SUBTRACT OR ADD TO FIRST CUT? Vasquez Soccer Squad if you need the duct to be 20x20 inside dimension then you would just add around 1/2” to your first cut. If you need it to be 20x20 outside dimension you would subtract 2 1/2” from your 20x20. So it would be 17 1/2” x 17 1/2” but you would add 1/2” to your first cut. That’s what I do with my tools and it gets pretty close to perfect.
Technically you should be adding 3/4” to your first cut because that is half of 1 1/2” but there are so many variables that come into play such as the pressure you apply, how broken in your square is, and the conditions of your cutting tools.
Also, technically, if you are putting perfect pressure on your tools you should subtract 3” from your outside dimensions. I subtract 2 1/2” because that’s just works out for me.

I've read a lot of negative opinions on ductboard... but it's old information. I was thinking of using it because we are moving our package unit. Would it acceptable for extending our trunk line in the crawlspace?
TIP: Keep the factory end (flattened side) closest to you. It's much easier to start the cutting tools on that tapered side verses the straight side.
Michael Yolch absolutely. Also, if you run the ship lap tool backwards it will not come out correctly.
Good job bro...I'm sure you're using an outward clinching staple gun and not a standard one right? Normal staples work themselves out of ductboard or so I always heard, so we've always use the outward clinching ones
Thanks! Yes, we use an outward clinch stapler. The outward clinching helps hold it all together. It's also good for insulation around metal duct.
Why did you add 5/8 of an inch to the initial and only initial cut? Also what size ductboard was this 1" or 1.5"

What kind of duct board is this?
Right here in Texas is not allow to use tape and mastic. Once you put the staples , you can choose to use or tape or mastic on top, but not both, or inspector reject job.

I'm confused. Some places say do not put mastic on top of foil tape. Please explain.
It is required by code to apply 181 mastic on all joints in my area.

Correct. This video is for 1 1/2” ductboard. I take 5/8” off at the start and it always works out for me. However, mathematically it should be 3/4”.
For 1” duct board I would take off 1/2” and see how that works out. Trial and error. Also, you would need 1” tools for 1” board.
whats the name for theme sheets and where do i find theme do they only come in 4x8 sheets thanks
they come in 4x10 sheets. its called duct board. you can find them at your local HVAC supply house.

How do you do outside dimension?
The total width of the duct will be 3 inches larger than the inside dimensions. So if the duct is supposed to be 16”x12” the outside will be 19”x15”. This is because the duct board in this video is 1 1/2” thick. Add the two sides or the two top and bottom together and you get 3 inches.
If you need the outside of the duct to be 20”x10” then you will need to find the inside dimensions to make the cuts. In this example you would subtract 3 inches from both the 20” and the 10” and your inside dimensions would be 17”x7”. Then follow the directions in the video to cut the duct board. Hope this helps!
Remember, everyone cuts with a little different pressures on their cutting tools. It may end up being a little off. Adjust accordingly.

Why you did extra on the measurements for the first cut
The first cut requires the extra measurement to compensate for the overlap of the shiplap at the end of the duct.
