whatever the rights and wrongs in their respective world views, how sad that we will never see television and meetings of well honed, educated minds like these again.
I don't know that poet-gentleman( today I saw him for the first time ),...but I got from him a very nice warm feeling. Probably a very good human being.
Marian Safari sir john had a very lonely childhood, being bullied, with distant emotional parents, and became one of Britain's Greatest Poets!1906~1984.RIP.
What a line up along with Parky. Brilliant. Now a days we are stuck with Alan Carr, jonathan Ross and a bunch of twats from Towie X factor etc. those where here days
I still adore Kenneth Williams and sorely miss his kind of wit and originality, but man oh man, he almost undid himself here. "they must accept their limitations, surely" - It's about the worst thing I've ever heard come out of Kenneth Williams' mouth. Some frustrations are borne because some are worth more than sticking doorknobs on doors and so forth but cannot see beyond what they are doing right then because of social climate, economy, responsibility and so on. If he Kenneth Williams could see in himself that he was worth more, or more importantly could offer more, than sticking doorknobs on a door, then why was it so unforgiving to him that others could have felt the same way about themselves? Still love him though...
Agreed. I'm also a big fan and it always struck me as odd that someone who comes from a working class family would have the opinions that he had. He could be a huge snob but at the same time share a great affinity with working class people. He was a very contradictory character
Betjeman and Larkin, at school they were the only two poets anyone really liked then they made us read the appalling Samuel Beckett which probably put 90% of us off ever reading poetry again...
The only thing that annoys me about this brilliant conversation is that none of the men, least of all Parkinson, expect the woman to have thoughts to contribute. It's Maggie Smith, you dolt!
A beautiful reading by Maggie and Ken - and Betjeman? Such a dear man, as modest as spring morning.

The reading at the end is priceless!
sir john betjeman,Dame Maggie, kenny Williams what a show,Sir John is my poet hero!
the Golden Age of television. Seeing a lineup like this now is unimaginable. Nothing but dreadful reality shows and celebrity culture. Take me back!
The look on Sir John's face ay 7:11 is so moving. A man completely lost in the sound of his words being so beautifully spoken.
Kenneth may have been known for his comedy but he was a classically trained actor and received enormous critical acclaim for his serious theatre work
Marvellous, simply marvellous, thank you.
Maggie is really amazing!! thanks a lot.
Clever stuff! highbrow, but extremely funny. We could do this now if we tried hard.

John Betjeman was a sweetie. Nice guy.
+Marian Safari
He was our Poet Laureate at one time. His poems are full of a touching humanity and gentle humour.

Indeed. Go and see his statue at St. Pancras Station, London.

This is wonderful.

I feel very similar to you about KW.
Sir John! How wonderful is that!
poems are so much better when they rhyme
Wow ! Thanks for the share 👍❤️ !!
Maggie watching Kenneth erupt 😅she’s as mesmerised with him then me 😅
WONDERFUL !
So sad they are all gone now……😢
Oh Kenny (& Maggie too) are so fucking pampered.
Yes, Kenneth should have known better than to say that. But well done to Parky though for his comments.
Maurice
Nonsense, Williams was right. Parky was a boring virtue-signaler.
If everyone was paid the same society would collapse.
@ShutThatDoor Indeed!!! Dame Maggie is amazing!!!
..never got Parkinson..?? ..don't see the attraction..
Slough really is a inappropriate name for such a beautiful area.
Tik tok ,.….really!!!
