    Mark really gets going around 10 minutes. Less sarcasm, more genuine excitement over the impact of this work environment change. As someone who works a regular desk job all day at the same desk where I do all of my audio production in the evening, I'm pretty sure these likeable clowns just sold me on a standing desk.

    Another perfect video on a topic that deserves much more attention!
    I have done pretty much what you show here and it's awesome. Having your studio desk on a height adjustable frame is extremely useful: You really don't have to do everything standing but getting up once in a while is noticeably better for your back and your productivity - plus I hate recording (electric) guitar sitting down.
    I have been thinking about a way to make height adjustable speaker stands too but haven't been able to come up with something that isn't quite so expensive, so my monitors will have to reside on the desk for now.
    Can't wait to see how well your solution will work!

    Interesting to see how the value for money has changed - I was in this situation about 12 years ago. In fact, you've just reminded me why I ditched my speaker stands and got a couple of foam wedges instead: it was when I bought my standing desk! I love it, and I actually now stand up to work pretty much all day when I'm doing my day job (software dev). The studio isn't set up at the moment, but when I've finally moved house I'll be reviewing my studio desk options very carefully in the light of this video because the desk I bought was more limited than the one you reviewed, and it cost me a shade over £2k!

    Awesomeness! When you raise and lower the main monitors, that will also change the way the speakers interact with the room. I realise the room is exceptionally well treated but it would definitely be interesting to see the measurements in the lower and raised speaker positions.
    Acoustic Fields once mentioned that they had subwoofers on chain rigs so they could move them up and down in the room to fine tune where they positionally smoothed out the room modes best. I assume your current seated position gives you a flat-ish (nobody has flat) response. Will that get worse/better as you raise and lower the speakers? Furthermore, people who buy platforms for near field speakers often just hear the altered room/reflection response when the speakers get raised a few inches. So having a few feet to play with will definitely show some noticeable changes….so I recon 😆
    Can’t wait to see the main speakers on platforms. I wonder if you can have a single button to raise the desk and both speakers to a pre-set position…..coool as!

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 года назад

      It’s all very room dependant. In our studio there is no noticeable difference in sound between the sitting or standing position (in the case of the nearfields on the desk).

    I bought an IKEA desk that goes up and down by using a crank, it was the most affordable option. I play guitars, and I also prefer to do that standing. Before it meant lots of bending down, having to hold the guitar with one hand so it doesn't knock something out or get dinged while I operate the DAW, or constantly putting away to sit and pick up again to play, annoying stuff. Now I can play standing, than just walk to a desk, do whatever on the PC, then take a step back to play again. Seamless.

    Amazing video and I love the idea of this but I'm struggling to make it work with optimal speaker positions without needing a crazy deep desk to get the speakers far enough away for proper placement. Maybe a kind of step up section to the desk, that's further away like those cheap Z desks you can find on gear4music (like a spoiler on a car that's up and back).

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 года назад +1

      Yeah that could work - but as you shouldn’t stand all the time, just as you shouldn’t sit all the time, I think speakers on stands is the best option and then pick either the sitting or standing position for critical listening and do the other when you’re editing, or emailing, or other tasks that don’t necessarily require you to be in the sweet spot. That’s working for me!

    I've been contemplating a similar solution for quite a while for the studio desk.
    Similar to yourselves, biggest concern is speaker placement. Considering how critical speaker placement and acoustic treatment is in the room, and the fact that speakers should be as de-coupled from things as possible, every real recommendation out there says speakers should be on their own stands.
    Any advice on the best way of putting speakers on a desk (like this scenario) without compromising sound quality?

    • @PresentDayProduction

      That will depend entirely on your room. I’d advise getting a seated listening position sorted, with speakers on stands behind the desk, and getting that as good as it can be, and then adopting the standing position for less critical tasks such as editing, admin etc.

    Planning to get one! How stable is the desk? Debating whether to put the monitor speakers on the desk, or leave on stands. Relative position, seated, would be the same. But concerned - even with something like the IsoAcoustics 200 desk monitor iso stand - about the acoustic compromise by having a less stable structure - presumably the desk is (a lot) more wobbly, than a decent 1m high stand. Thoughts? Thanks!

    • @PresentDayProduction

    Pic @ 7:40. How does that work? Didn't you have to cut out the desk top between the rack sides to accommodate the rack gear? Could you detail the build in another video?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 года назад

      It’s easy enough to cut a square out for rack gear with a jigsaw. Or square up the racks at the front so you don’t have to

      @@PresentDayProduction I wish you added more details on how you built the desk.
      Nobody sells exactly the desk the way you made it, with the two tilted rack panels only to the sides and that can accommodate the speakers on their tops. Companies usually sell workstations either with a whole long shelf that has 3 columns of racks (meaning the display will be too high), or otherwise they sell desks with tilted side panels, but that do not have the space to hold the speakers on their tops (which is not ideal for a standing desk). Your desk is the only example I could find after weeks of digging online that would check all the boxes. Too bad its tutorial is a sequence of jumpcuts lasting no longer than 50 seconds including the funny animations and jokes (and don't get me wrong, I did like those animations a lot).
      Still is more info that I could ever find anywhere else for a sit-stand music desk, but as I am not an experienced woodworker, I am still intimidated.
      Your work is exceptional btw, you have boosted the quality of your videos immensely over the years.

    Is this channel where you rewired your studio to thunderbolt or fire wire only. Might of been a patch bay. Any way it was cool.

      We have a Thunderbolt Focusrite Clarett 8PreX, so maybe that’s what you’re thinking of!
      We also have CAT5 between the rooms.

    That’s quite an expensive electrical appliance, just to help raise your old organ up... but I suppose it comes with age. Rather than buy more desks, perhaps dig a hole/pit in front of your listening position... put the desk in it... and raise/lower yourself, as required.
