Just wanted to say welcome to the channel all you new folks. And thanks for all the support you old folks! I hope to be uploading more in 2018. So stick around and make yourself at home here.
Hey Jake, 12 Sleighs of christmas is beautiful book! I'm so glad I came across this video. I'm a new illustrator who's just started working on her first childrens book. Your video was so helpful to me, not only did you share the process of the artwork but also the communication back and forth from the publishers. Not many would share that information so for a self taught artist like me that was really informative and valuable. Just wanted to take the time out to say thank you! I really appreciate this video. :)
all your videos really inspire me to draw jake and especially your childrens books the art and design on all of them are amazing my favorite has to be your new one the 12 sleighs of christmas
Jake, I know dozens of people ask about all the different projects you involve yourself in but I asked for this specific topic in a comment when you approach your subscriber base about what we'd like to see. Your genuine dedication to evolving artists' development is admirable. Thank you.
Jake... You are an inspiration! I have been so lost with my art in recent years, but then I found you. I have always been a keen artist both traditionally and digital in both 2D & 3D, but I NEVER finish anything.... I have stopped and started so many projects that I could not count them. I have just signed up to SVS Learning & WILL, by Christmas 2018, have a children's Christmas book published! Children's books has always been the one thing that I go back to and, after your inspiration, I will achieve the life long dream. Thank you so much !
That was great! I can see why you would love doing that. Getting to add some sleighs that are your own creation to it is really cool! Thanks for sharing.
This was really neat to watch; I am a process junkie and love to see how things come together from an idea to a finished product. Also, adorable book that I will be adding to my collection of delightfully illustrated kids' books.
Hi Jake. Loved this video, thank you! The book looks fabulous, how amazing to land the ideal children's book job 😊 The SVS class sounds fantastic. I did a one week summer course last year on Writing and Illustrating children's books (0-6 years), at the House of Illustration in London, and absolutely loved it! I'm currently doing one of their 10 week illustration courses, on illustrating people, and again, am getting so much out of it. Thanks again!
Hi I liked the page with the elves working on blue , looked like they where working on the sky was under their feet , cute, also liked the flying saucer page😍
I wish to say a happy new year too all of you. Thanks Jake Parker for this really informative video because since last year or two. Before I graduated high school. I published my first book on the roosevelt island landmarks coloring book. My art teacher at the time was promoting my first book and many people had loved it! Altho this was a test product. This year Jan 9th my books and projects with this author will be showcased on Roosevelt Island at NYC. But thank you so much Jake for creating a educational video provided for us to learn how to draw, create comics and childrens book. You name it. And I respect you as to being my inspired artist and first person to get me into a world of illustration. I dont know how much I should say about this whole progress on my upcoming books although I wish to thank you for being here in this RUclips community. Jake Parker Banzai!
This is very helpful. It’s not often I see content like this - or maybe I missed others. Seeing the process(not just drawing) is really helpful for starting artists like me. I’ve recently changed my career and now I will be studying Illustration. Watching this gives me hope. Haha. Thank you loadssss!
Super outstanding Teacher Jake. Awesome~ all your amazing picture books. Indeed, those characters are the most creative and so cute. Super outstanding Teacher Jake. Merry Christmas to you, beautiful wife, and your sweet family.
I entered this field wanting to be a badass Sci-Fi concept artist for videogames and movies. But after seeing your videos,..I am becoming more and more inclined to do children's books. they look so much fun.
I just illustrated my first children's book and it's on Amazon. I'm not happy with it, which i suppose happens when you grow as an artist. I love to write and frankly i think i could write and illustrate my books, and hoping to do so. I just bookmarked your website and hope to learn some more from you. :)
The book looks amazing, the colors, the designs. I don't have kids but 'm thinking getting the book for myself haha. I really love your traditional drawings and there are many videos on that. But I'm also interested in your digital drawing process. Are you planning any future videos explaining your steps?
A lot of things you said helped me to- just draw. I have sometimes problems to draw in a way I imagined it and when you were saying about planning I found a lot of good tips. Thank you for making videos like this :)
What would your advice be for someone who wants to write children's ebooks, but has never written a book before. And also has no experience drawing lol
Jake, I really like the behind the scenes looks at your process/work. I'm wondering what your fee structure might look like on a book like this? How many pages are included in the base fee? Covers? number of revisions included? Added services (was the wrap around cover included in the original fee or was that additional?) Don't need specific numbers. I know that can get weird from a client/contract point, as well as, a personal point. It would be great to see a video from you that talks about getting paid as an artist/creator! Maybe one exists already? With this being a few years old, I'm not sure if you'll see this comment....regardless, Thanks for the great work!
Nice!!! You're hella talented!! Your work, drawings and art work are masterful and full of life and over flowing with artistic creative vision and pop!!!
This was a really helpful video, thanks for all the information. I am just finishing a diploma in illustrating children's books at the moment. I bookmarked the page for the Illustrating Children's Books class to coma back to later :)
Making the size to allow for "bleed" always confuses me and seems like it's different for different formats, looked like for this book you were requested to provide a 5/8" bleed....is there any way you can cover this in another video?
That's was really nice!!! 💛 This is exactly what I want to do And this is the job I will choose it to myself Thank you for showing us all the steps I really appreciate it Here is a new subscriber 👋🏼
I kid you not, man. I was at Barnes n Noble a few weekends ago and I saw your book from a distance. I knew the art looked familiar and I said to myself, "this Jake Parker?" Sure enough, I picked it up and I was right!!
You mentioned you had an agent? How does one get represented as a children's book illustrator? I've been doing books for about 5 years now mostly for individual and small publishing companies. Is there a site where I can submit my work for representation? My links: freelanced.com/romneyvasquez instagram.com/rvasquez1583 Thanks, man. Love your work. Keep it up.
TakaMitsukai I would be interested, in any advice. I do traditional art style as well. I’m thinking it would have to be scanned into photoshop and edited to make it brighter with saturation and such. Otherwise most just draw using a drawing table like a Wacom tablet I believe.
I just googled How to Illustrate Children’s Books and am so glad to have found and watched this one. I’ve been asked to illustrate a book and my hubby and I will be speaking with the author in a couple of hours. I am trying to soak in as much information as I’m able to know what questions to ask. This video has helped and thank you. Do you think it’s possible to use the Procreate App for all illustration?? Please advise. THank you!
Great video Jake. Congrats on that accomplishment!! One question: since this is a “Christmastime” book, how far in advance did the publisher start the process? Was it a year before release? Was it more than a year? I was just curious as to the “time factor” and how it fit into the process. Cheers!! ...ps: LOVE 3PtPerspective!!!
Hello; I love your channel and I thank you for your tutorials ! There is something about inking that bothers me...how can the black areas, mainly shadows, are portrayed when there is no visual reference, meaning, the idea still in your mind..I think this subject is called occlussion? Can you please share a link on this? this is my block in my inking progress..thank you
Hello Jake :) Thank you for your amazing video! I have a question regarding the process: When you get commissioned to draw the cover and the back of the book does your client give you the seze of the book? And more importantly the thickness, because 20 page book (for exampple) can be from 3-5 mm to 1 cm (even more) depending on the thickness of the individual page. How ofthen your clents are prepared and know these details when they give you the assignment?
Great video Jake and I am really enjoying your "How to Draw Everything" course at SVSLearn. I was wondering if your book is available as a PDF. I saw on Amazon it is available as either hardcover or Kindle.
super insightful video! since you said you just got comfortable working on your 8th book, how does a young artist not loose his/her mind working on the very first one? any tips?
Hi there. I have a question. I also write a children's book. Did you copyright your book through @t? If so, did you have to use form TX for text and form VA for your pictures to copyright for both texts and pictures? Also, where did you for editing service for your book? Do you recommend an editor who is very good and reliable, but not too expensive? Please advice. Thanks.
This was cool to see, thank you. I'm curious, does the publisher tell you the size and aspect of the book before you start or do you figure out the size together? I'm also curious what info, if any, they give you about specs. Do they give you size / gutter templates, or do you just do that yourself. Thanks!
The illustrator usually has creative freedom on the trim size, but there are standard sizes that the publisher works with. So for this one I said I wanted to make it square and they told me what square dimensions they can work with. They then give me templates to work from.
Just wanted to say welcome to the channel all you new folks. And thanks for all the support you old folks! I hope to be uploading more in 2018. So stick around and make yourself at home here.
New office tour!!!
Yeah! A new office tour would be so cool!

@jakeparker How much do you charge for illustrations?
Hi Jake how am I able to get Hold of you? I am an upcoming children’s author and need an illustrator

I was recently asked to illustrate a children’s book !!!! I can’t wait to get started . This will be my first book
I'm almost done mine for someone from my church. I'm trying to edit it. Its a long but fun process
So how did it go? Did you enjoy experience???????
how did it go ?
Looks amazing
That was great! I can see why you would love doing that. Getting to add some sleighs that are your own creation to it is really cool! Thanks for sharing.
What if you hand drew it and are editing on photo shop? This is my first book.
I have the same question....my first book too !
Great design for a Christmas sweater have front cover on the front of it and elves from the back on the back of the sweater.
The way my attention snapped back to focus when he said the names of my sons favorite vehicle book 😂😂 seeing that email is super helpful
This was really neat to watch; I am a process junkie and love to see how things come together from an idea to a finished product. Also, adorable book that I will be adding to my collection of delightfully illustrated kids' books.
Loved seeing the process. Gorgeous cover! Just ordered it... I think my kiddos will love it...especially my son.
What a rad book! Surprised I didn’t see it till now! When I was younger (even now), I would have LOVED this book! Still surprised I never saw this!
Thanks Jake for such a clear, concise discussion. Helpful.

I love your book! Thank you for sharing your process. Wow, I just noticed the year 2017.
Just bought the book at B&N last night. The artwork is so beautiful. I will be studying these pages for some time to come. Congrats Jake!
I really liked the third and fourth sketch. Do you enjoy having to go back to the drawing board after putting so much work in?
+Graphical One yep! I love drawing. My advice is don't become a professional artist if you don't enjoy redrawing things.
This is very helpful. It’s not often I see content like this - or maybe I missed others. Seeing the process(not just drawing) is really helpful for starting artists like me. I draw old school, ink and paper. Do you have the best suggestion for how I can get my drawings into a children's book, and look good? Thank you!
I know this is an old question, but were you still wondering about this? I’m happy to help!

Geez, *SPOILERS*! Haha, looks like a really fun holiday picture book! 🎅
Thank you for the great info! Wondering how long this process takes? How much time do the publishers allow you?
Loved the video. I was wondering how long does it take you from start to finish to finish a book that excites you vs a book that's boring you?
Takes about the same amount of time. One will just have more love and care in it.
Massively helpful, thank you for sharing this :)
