  • There are plenty of pieces from video games that are beautiful to listen to that then allow you to move on with your day. Right? We get that, wow, that's pretty anyway...And then there are songs like this. That...Actually enter into your spirit and leave you changed. That's not hyperbole, either. Smiles from Juran is a poignant piece of video game music, and feels very...important. Warframe is such a unique video game, and this music makes it stand out even more to me.

I am a ptsd survivor and that line about an ugly broken thing having it‘s pain taken away always helped me. I cried to this song bit and to this line so often beforw I managed to getvout of the worst of it.
It‘s one of the most on point depictions of how a traumatised person feels and how at least I myself saw myself when I was down. Still do sometimes. Please don‘t say stuff like „no you are ok and not an ugly broken thing“ I know. Saying that is like telling a depressed person to just do stuff that makes them happy, so just let it be.
I am out of my worst phase for almost 2 years now and it still touches me. The fact that this insight and these perfectly fitting words came from a game like warframe that is not about such thing in the mayority of it‘s runtime (compared to stuff like hellblade eg or other games that make a point about mental issues) is still one of the big reasons I hold DE the developers in high regards.
Even the way umbra twitches and spasms holding his head in the vision and the way the operator slowly calms that down before they can connect is very very, i dunno, relatable I guess.
Sorry to trauma dump like that but it‘s just something I wanted to point out as a positive. It‘s not a common thing for such pieces to achieve this level of depth on such topics

I also love the way the game uses the concept of yin and yang in this moment. The wrath option presents as "light" and the emptiness option presents as "dark", even though our modern understanding of good and evil would have us inclined to view those things the other way around. Yin and yang takes that perception and shows the idea of the light within the dark, and the dark within the light, neither of which are inherently good or evil.

The questline from which this song comes from is quite the emotional ride as we discover more about the creation of the Warframes themselves. Already saw someone explain the context in the comments but I'll take a shot at it too because having more than one way of telling the story is always nice so SPOILER warning for those who haven't played and/or are interested in playing. We in the community never want you to be spoiled.
In this questline, The Sacrifice, we rebuild a weird Warframe, Excalibur Umbra (or just Umbra for short) and he has a deep tie with one of the game's antagonits, Ballas, the creator and designer of the titular Warframes, who are essentially weapons made using metal, viruses, drugs, Infested tissue, and living humans. We discover that the process to create a Warframe is rather painful, that the person who becomes one goes through extreme pain, and subjects used also tend to be people who have gone through a very rough patch, either recent or not. Success was not granted as they would go berzerk and go on a killing spree. That is until the Tenno, the suriving children of an incident regarding travelling through the Void (extra dimentional space area that is whacky and weird and dangerous and eldritgh) show up with uncontrollable void powers. Ballas then, with the help of his at the time lover and scientist, used their powers and channeled them through the Warframes, establishing a link between the 2 that would allow the Warframes to be calm, and the Tenno to focus their power on until they could control it entirely.
With the context out of the way let us get into the meat of it. We discover with each time we try to connect with Umbra that he used to be a soldier, a Dax soldier, one of the elites, and he was afflicted with a strange illness that left him bedridden. His son would be by his side the whole way through, and you can tell they have a deep loving bond, his son even following on his own father's footsteps and becoming a Dax too. With each flashback we discover more and more, how he was good at this in-universe game, Komi, and was never beat, a game he and Ballas, who is also there the whole time, are playing. We learn he was a good musician, that he played an in-universe instrument called the Shawzin, which is a string instrument (this will be relevant regarding the music). And in the last flashbacks we discover that the illness he was afflicted with was not random, it was Ballas who did it. He was infected with the same stuff he gave the other subjects to make the Warframes, and it was slowly changing him from inside out, and he couldn't speak, only breathe. He also implanted a rod in his brain that would stop him from attacking Ballas once the change took effect because once it happened he would go berzerk.
What happened? He changed, went berzerk, and killed his own son, not being able to kill Ballas in the process. Why did this happen? Because in order for the Warframe to be made, for the change to ocurr, the person must have a deep and traumatic experience. And what could be more traumatic than to kill your own child with your own hands?
And now we get to the song. In the scene, after the final flashback, we are in Umbra's headspace. We see a tree in the distance, and a wailing, grieving Umbra, cursed to re-live that one last memory over, and over, and over again. We get close, kneel down in front of him, the song begins to play as Umbra slowly but surely begins to calm down. The song playing is this one, and it is heavily hinted that this was the song that Umbra used to play to his son on the Shawzin. As the song plays we hear a monologue, almost like a sort of journal entry, from Ballas himself, explaining the reason why the Tenno and the Warframes could have such an excellent balance:
"We had created monsters we couldn't control. We drugged them, tortured them, eviscerated them... we brutalized their minds, but it did not work. Until they came. And it was not their force of will, not their Void devilry, not their alien darkness... it was something else. It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly broken thing...and take away its pain.".
We, the players, the Tenno, managed to ease the pain of Umbra, to allow him to move on. The pain of that memory will forever be there, it is a scar that cannot heal properly for it is too ugly, too brutal, too deep. But we manage to help the healing process, to help him embrace the memory, go beyond it, and move on. We manage to take away his pain.

There is also the heavily hinted at reason as to why the Tenno, and Umbra have such a strong, and almost instantly made connection. One was forced to kill his son as a result of not being able to control himself, and the other was forced to kill the now-insane adults onboard the Zariman 10-0. One is a vilomah, the other is an orphan, and it's kind of beautiful to realize that such deep, traumatic losses helped them connect with others who were so deeply damaged when the Orokin were utterly obsessed with beauty, and perfection in every form at the time, and ironically, their ability to do so ended up being the downfall of the Orokin.

Warframe is a really special game for me, because it was one of the first pieces of media to really acknowledge what it was to live with the sort of illness that I live with in The Sacrifice, the hideous and violating nature of what it's like to relive your worst moments over and over. It told me the two things I'd been waiting to hear, that I'd been hearing from people in my support network, yet pop culture wasn't really clicking with: that feeling anger and wanting to rage at my situation wasn't wrong, it wasn't unhealthy, just that there were unhealthy ways of releasing that anger; and that wanting to just be rid of your pain wasn't too much to ask for.

This is such an understated piece in the entirety of warframe. Its such a short piece with so much emotion in it. Idk if you still play or plan play the game up to this point but the song is meant to encapsulate all the feelings and things a father was unable to say to his son in their final hours together.
Spoliers if you want a more detailed breakdown
TLDR is long long time ago the Orokin (think space roman empire) before they collapsed and resulted in the game world as it is now. Tried making the proto type warframes by literally torturing people with drugs and space viruses and all sorts of experimentation (almost evengalion like if you know that). Go figure it didnt work, the people basically went mad started killing people and yada yada. It isnt till much later when the Tenno show up (the player) who are actual children with their own space powers, are able to sit down and just empathies with them and ease their pain. And then the warframes willingly gave them control.
Fast forward to what this song is about. 1 specific guy who was a high ranking soldier had a long history with the lead designer of the warframes (Ballas) (another long story), he got sick and on his death bead unable to talk he just spends his final moments with his son. Only to find out Ballas intends to turn him into a "special" warframe, which he does, makes him kill his own son, and basically be trapped in that memory forever. Until we come across him years later, and walk through his memories and help him find some kind of closure.
I think thats about as consise as I can make it. The other thing is heres a quote from the part where that song plays
"We had created monsters we couldn't control. We drugged them, tortured them, eviscerated them... we brutalized their minds, but it did not work. Until they came. And it was not their force of will, not their Void devilry, not their alien darkness... it was something else. It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly broken thing...and take away its pain."

I always love hearing your style of vocalization as you turn these tunes over in your mind.
The fictional instrument at the start is known in-universe as a shawzin, a cross between a Japanese shamisen and a banjo. This was a song that a new major character used to play for his kids. When he's gone mad after his tragedy, it plays again when _we help him_ find peace.
    Spoilers:
"It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an _ugly broken_ thing...and take away its pain."

and given the things we learn about Umbra, that’s pretty much how it all went, especially if you go for the positive or neutral choices. There is acceptance in that in one way or another.

As many wrote before me, this is a song that got played from a soldier to his son who basically was forced to kill him for spying on someone whos part of the so called orokin. He was later, through beeing exposed to the infestation transformed into a anti-sentient weapon or a so called warframe. We the player control these and are able to do so because we are the tenno. Thats the more or less short version of this soldiers story, everyone may correct me if im wrong :)

A pair of hurting, broken people, coming together and finding a way to move beyond their pain.
Lotus is often called “Space Mom” by the community. I will always think of Umbra as “Space Dad”; able to protect his adopted child from harm at all times, to never again experience the grief of loss (tying into his unique passive: able to fight alongside the Operator on the battlefield when other Warframes can only stand stock-still like an empty suit if armor).

This song is forever my favorite from Warframe. Umbra isn't just a warframe. He's a man. A man grieving the loss of his son. An act he himself was forced to commit. His grief is so strong that all he can do is lash out at everyone. Until we come along. We came to him at his lowest point and gave him our shoulder to cry on. we gave him empathy and compassion. While it cannot heal his scars. We could at least take the pain away.

For the people who dont play Warframe here is a bit of extra context.
The warframe Umbra (frame in the thumbnail) was a soldier known as a Dax, and as punishment for spying on his boss was forcibly turned into a waframe and locked into a room with his son, whom he then killed.
This song, Smiles from Juran, is a song Umbra played to his son many times when he was a Dax and is played on an instrument called the Shawzin (the in-game version of a Japanese shamisen).
The Shawzin can also be obtained and used by players, and yes you can play pretty anything on them, there is loads yt vids for them 👌

  • @skyleryarroll2369
    @skyleryarroll2369 Год назад

For me, this song feels like a microcosm of the way our experiences shape who we are. The Shawzin segment is the experience, or the memory of the experience. The orchestral segment is the part of us that the experience blossomed into. When Umbra was consumed by a terrible memory, we showed him a kinder one, and how that memory became part of who he was. We showed him a part of himself that wasn't a monster; a part that was still a father.

With the context of playing through the Sacrifice questline, I feel like this piece is something like an old warrior remembering their past glory.
the Shawzin/Shamisen is the old warrior reminiscing on what was, while the swelling orchestral part is the memories of his past glories coming back to him, and remembering the pain that came with it.

Smiles From Juran is very much Warframe's equivalent to Leaves From the Vine in Avatar.
