Comanche: Maximum Overkill in DOSBox

  • This is me playing through "Oil Tank Holiday", the first mission of Comanche: Maximum Overkill. This is a helicopter simulation of the (now-cancelled) RAH-66 Comanche. The game pioneered the "great graphics, low realism" characteristic that went into most of NovaLogic's games. The graphics were quite impressive for a 1992 DOS game (thanks to the then-pioneering voxel rendering engine), but the flight model is a bit lacking (for example, the collective acts as an altitude selector, changing your actual altitude instead of your rate of climb or descent). At the time, this game competed directly with Gunship 2000 (the only other major helicopter sim of the day), which beat Comanche hands-down in terms of realism and depth of play, but featured relatively flat graphics.
    Filmed using the direct-to-AVI feature of DOSBox 0.65, and converted to a RUclips-compatible AVI with mencoder (which comes with MPlayer).

    From what I remember: 1 Hellfire could take out 1 tank, but 2 stingers should be used to take out a tank if you had to. The artillery should be used sparingly, the wingman could be used as extra Hellfires though. The unguided rockets were useless but could be used in a last-ditch effort against tanks. Cannon was useful against Hokums and oil barrels. The training missions were actually progressive and got harder like they should have.

    I remember SimCopter and the way it allowed you to fly over cities generated in SimCity. I know some people didn't like it because it was too simplistic and repetitive, and in some ways it was, but it was still a lot of fun for a while.

    Great blend of arcade action with a tad bit of simulation/tactics thrown in. Calling airstrikes to clear canyons of anti-air tanks while defending with Stingers against KA-50s was awesome, all with digital samples, speech and a great midi soundtrack for that extra bit of atmosphere. I love this game!

    Now you mention it, Crysis uses a voxel engine for the terrain too, that's why there's such a long view distance. It's a lot more advanced than this game's, obviously, but shows that voxels aren't dead yet!

    Agree that it's a very cool sim; F29 is pretty good too, although I'd probably pick TFX over it. By the way, the DOSBox keys you're referring to are actually CTRL-F11 and CTRL-F12 (though I believe you can remap these if you want).

    @fisk0 the water reflection could be turned on or off, it was a cpu killer tho, even on a 486/33mhz with 8mb of ram (incredible machine in 1992) it would make the game crawl. The 486 50 or 66 was really needed, but they weren't yet available when I played this.
    Gotta remember this was all done with CPU, there were no 3D cards available for PC's until a few years later.

    another way also is to change the cpu type and core in the config settings for the game - changing it to something like 386 slow and simple core will slow it down nicely - well this worked for me with werewolf

  • @LateBlt
    @LateBlt  17 лет назад

    It runs very well in DOSBox; I think even the default config should run it fine. You may want to fiddle with your sound card settings, and I'm not sure if Comanche will choke on the default DOSBox settings of EMS and XMS enabled; try turning either or both off.

    This has got to be one of the best looking engines in the early 90's. Those voxel graphics still look a lot better than most of the early 3D accelerated games from 1997-2001.
    I have seen screenshots of this game with some extremely good looking water reflections too (the kind that games usually didn't have until 2003 or something), but couldn't see any of that in this video. Anybody knows anything more about that?

    I remember back in those days these game was like Crysis in 2007. Only the absolute best PC could run it in full specs but in 1992 with no internet it was harder to have a great PC running and these game as kind of like an elitist game.

  • @LateBlt
    @LateBlt  17 лет назад

    The game is so old that I'm almost tempted to just put it up for download somewhere (I seriously doubt NovaLogic cares about enforcing copyright on this 15-year-old game when much newer and "better" versions exist), but I'm not in a position where I can afford to expose myself to legal liability. Google for it, and if you really can't find it, send me an e-mail.

    @drvoke Search for "Unlimited Detail" it runs in software. For a comparission, Crysis on Very high 1 runs at about 5-10 fps in software, if you're using one of the best CPU's. And yes dx 11 can be run in software mode

    The NovaLogic logo is AdLib music I think, and the sound that comes right after it is digitized sound, so this mostly likely is a problem with your audio settings. Try changing dosbox.conf to have a regular Sound Blaster (dosbox.conf calls this "sb1") with the usual settings of I/O address 220h, IRQ7, and DMA1.
