SU-57: Why Russia is not using its most advanced aircraft over Ukraine

  • The Russian SU-57 stealth fighter will not have any significant impact on the outcome of the war in Ukraine, a defence analyst has said.
    Peter Wilson, a senior defence policy analyst at the think tank RAND Corporation, says the use of the SU-57 has been "episodic and almost experimental" because the few aircraft that Russia has of this model are still being developed.

      Maintenance issue, they probably settled for iron pellet paint and shaping. From the frontal aspect it looks comparable to other stealth fighters but it doesn’t look like an all aspect stealth fighter. They do know how to build one but the cost of making an F-22 analogue was probably too high a financial burden.

    The reasons these will not show up over Ukraine is Russia is worried they will be shot down by western weapons. If that happens how will they be able to sell them to the few countries that buy their aircraft. How can you expect an aircraft that costs about 37 million dollars to be as good as one that is all most three times as much . The west's technology is totally different as I recall a Russian aircraft being shot down over Ukraine with a sat nav from a car in the cockpit .This hole episode is a sad old man's wish who believes their should be a USSR again.

    It's certainly not a "stealth" fighter at between 1 and 0.1 m/2 RCS. It doesn't have S-curve inlets to hide the highly reflective compressor blades, it doesn't use RAM coating on the entire airframe and it has all-moving tail planes which can produce large radar returns depending on their orientation. Meaning it will be possible to get missile lock on them at long range unlike actual stealth platforms like the F-35 and F-22. Considering how dense the ground based SAM defense is over most of Ukraine, Russia would almost certainly lose some of any Su-57s it sent to the war.

    That's a pretty fair appraisal of the SU-57- Felon and can see from some of the comments their are those who disagree as is their right but regardless this aircraft is still very much teething and hasnt reached operational status and wont be mass produced as their aviation industry doesnt have the capability to do so. There is expected to be no impact in the foreseeable future in anytheater other than airshows.✈ thanks for sharing

    For the same reason American F35's are not present in Ukraine.

    • @chillout1109
      @chillout1109 Год назад +1

      The reasons why F-35s are not present in Ukraine are different to why SU-57s are not present. The SU-57s are missing because there aren't that many of them that have been produced. With a total of less than 10 SU-57s that we know of, why risk them in combat? Such a tiny number of your most advanced 5th gen combat fighter would not make a difference in the war anyway, even if all of them were to be deployed in Ukraine. Russia already has a lot of SU-25s, SU-27s, SU-30s, SU-35s and Mig 35s, that are very capable, and are doing great, at a much cheaper cost, should they be shot down.
      Whereas on the other hand, the F-35 needs a pilot to have spent years in training before flying it. Ukraine doesn't have that kind of time. The F-35 also requires specialist equipment and hangars for servicing and storage. Ukraine doesn't have those. It is also an incredibly expensive aircraft. There would need to be a couple of F-35s in Ukraine for them to actually make a difference in this conflict. With F-35 costing around $80M each, it is far much more effective to send a dozen HIMARS to Ukraine for the price of one F-35, or a dozen HIMARS and hundreds of their rockets, several hundreds of Javelin ATWS, and several hundreds of MANPADS. Also, for the F-35 to be as effective as it was designed to be, it needs to work with, and share data with other assets like AWACS, Triton drones, 4th Gen aircraft, surface combatants etc - which means the US will have to get directly involved in this war since Ukraine doesn't possess such tech at the moment. Also, Ukraine is not a member of the F-35 partners. Only the countries involved in the design and manufacturing of the F-35 are allowed to fly the F-35. It's an incredibly advanced aircraft with classified technology that needs to be kept safe and secret that it can't just be flown by anyone. So, since Ukraine is not an F-35 partner, it doesn't own any F-35 fighters. And so, finally, who is going to send F-35s to Ukraine? The United Kingdom? The USA? Italy? The Netherlands? Australia? Norway? Denmark? Canada? None of them can do that. That would immediately be considered as an escalation and Russia would definitely move to strike NATO countries, or even use nuclear weapons that Putin has only been threatening to use for a while now. Up to now, the US and its allies have only been sending what are considered as defensive weapons to Ukraine - air defense guns and missiles, rockets, armored fighting vehicles, rifles, anti-tank weapons etc. A really advanced jet like the F-35, although it can be used only in a defensive role, would correctly be considered an offensive weapon by Russia, leading to an escalation of the war. The US would very much like to avoid that. Why do you think none of the allied countries have not sent any aircraft of any type to Ukraine so far? Even Poland, who fly the exact same Migs and Sukhois as Ukraine, have refused to send them to Ukraine for that same reason - fear of escalation, and fear of possible Russian retaliation.
