Did she leave Jerusalem after the crucifixion and death of Jesus? It's about 1,500 kms away from Jerusalem by land, but I think can be accessed by boat. So perhaps Mama Mary left but during Pentecost, she was there so she must have returned, and after her assumption, John the Beloved went back to Ephesus where he lived until his death and was buried there. Did she leave Jerusalem after the crucifixion and death of Jesus? It's about 1,500 kms away from Jerusalem by land, but I think can be accessed by boat. So perhaps Mama Mary left but during Pentecost, she was there so she must have returned, and after her assumption, John the Beloved went back to Ephesus where he lived until his death and was buried there. Accounts revealed he wrote the book while in Patmos, an island just off the coast.

My Answer:
On the assumption of Mary into heaven, most of the sources in the tradition assume or state clearly that she die first. The earliest sources - sermons and narratives from the Eastern Church in the sixth and seventh centuries, tell the story that she lived in Jerusalem after Jesus' ascension, and when she sensed that death was near, she told the Apostle John, who got in touch with the rest of the Apostles. They came hurrying back - some brought there by angelic messengers - and prayed with her as she died. After her death, they saw Jesus come to carry her soul up to heaven, and then they carried her body in a solemn procession down into the Kidron Valley, and buried her there in a tomb that is still venerated today. Three days later, when they went to visit her tomb, they found it open and empty, as Jesus' disciples had found his to be. The promise, of course is for all of us eventually to share in his resurrection ourselves.
That's the general outline, repeated in a lot of ancient Eastern sources, and picked up in the first Western (Latin) ones, as well. But in the 20th century, when Pope Pius XII determined to declare her bodily entry into heaven - her full sharing, one could say, in the resurrection of Jesus, to be a dogma of the Church's faith, some Catholic theologians worried about whether it could be right to assume that she died; the reason is that the Western tradition, following St. Paul in passages like Romans 5.12, sees death as something that only came into our world as a result of sin. If Mary, as we believe, was preserved from sharing in the guilt of sin, theologians argued, she must be preserved also from the effects of sin, including death. Opinions were divided enough that when Pope Pius proclaimed the dogma, the decree avoided the question of saying that she had died, and simply says, "the Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven." In other words, the Church has left it an open question whether or not she died, and you can hold what you want on this. But in the Eastern tradition, it's assumed that she did die - as Jesus did, who was also without sin; that is why Eastern icons traditionally portray her being carried by the twelve Apostles on a bier to her tomb to be buried. And the name for the feast on August 15, in the Eastern Churches, is traditionally not "the Assumption" but "the "Dormition," or "falling asleep," of Mary, Mother of God.
