- In this video, Ryan explains how to paint wood paneling. This is a frequent question we get asked and it is important to know that painting the wood paneling will save you a lot of money instead of ripping the paneling out.
We used Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer for this project and were extremely impressed with it in our review.
the coating held firm to the wall even when Ryan scratched it with his keys.

Save Money! Dont Replace your wood paneling! Just Paint it!
do you have a after video of after you painted this?
I've found it is very important to wait 24 hours for the water based primer to cure. It appears to dry very fast and many painters coat over the primer too soon. The next layer of water based paint causes the primer to dissolve and creates unnecessary bleeding. Then of course said painter complains about the water born primer even though it is 100% user error.
Great tip! Yes we have learned that the hard way
I have a couple of questions.
1) Did you just use soap and water to clean the paneling?
2) From what I gathered from the video, you didn’t do a sanding at all, just the Sherwin Williams Extreme Primer, correct?
Thanks, John Gallagher
Hi John, we wanted to test the adhesion primer so on this project we did NOT sand, but on a typical project we would very lightly scuff sand. (mainly 6ft and below) The homeowner cleaned this with a mild solution of soap and water (dawn) We would usually use Krud Cutter if there was smoking in the room or the kitchen, otherwise it would be painted
I am glad I watched this through to the end... I will now get the Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer instead of the Zinzer oil base primer.
Disagree, For wood walls like this a shellac pigmented primer would adhear better, and get the nasty out.
Extreme bond primer is good for this but cabinets for example
use bin.
We dont disagree but the availability of shellac is tough right now, and the smell was not an option at this home
We bought a house with gray panels out on the enclosed porch and want to paint it white..do i still need to use a bonding primer or will regular primer be fine?
Wear nap length roller did you use?
3/8 " roller nap on this one.
What kind of paint can I use on top of the primer
im hoping acrylic as i have done my bathroom cabinets
Do you need to sand if the paneling and cabinets are smooth with no rough textures?
Yes
Do you think this primer is better than the zinsser 123 for paneling/varnished trim/etc?
We do like the 1,2,3 as well. This seemed to adhere much better
123 isn't as good as it was years ago, Extreme Bond is a much better product.
Can you use Swiffer wet wipes mopping to clean i
Yes you can, or a lesf blower if its in the garge
@@RyanAmatoPaintingEaston So it doesn't contain alcohol and can prime over it and it won't peel off? Thank you for answering, I was looking for a way other than the tsp
What top coat is compatible?
Did I miss the painting part?
I have honey oak cabinets that I'm painting. I'm doing a white and I'm worried about tannins showing through? Do you think it's safe to just use SW Extreme Bond, or do I need to use a sealer first? EB first or a sealer first?
If your concerned with the tannins go to an oil based primer. We routinely use cover stain for this, great question
Do you need to do the primer if your wood paneling is real wood?
Great question, no not this adhesion primer but a good interior wood primer is needed. Unless your wood is sealed, then you would need the same adhesion primer
So after the extreme bond primer. Do you just paint over that ?
Yes the prep work like cleaning or sanding is done before the primer, whichever you choose to use, then your finish coats on top of primer. You could choose to sand lightly between coats
What’s the best method to paint knotty pine white? Also, would this work for kitchen cabinets that have a wood veneer front?
We were just talking about this yesterday. Each knot needs to be individually spot primed using shellac and then primed using the normal primer you would use, or simply shellac the entire surface however shellac is hard to find and expensive right now. Then continue with the same process.
Do you need to sand if the paneling or cabinets are smooth?
I would
with a 220
to a 320 grittt
not sure I learned much here. The homeowner did the priming, you showed us a gallon of paint. Where exactly is the how to part?
My question is: the paneling that I have is raped with plastic, could I use the same material?
I hope he plans on using either an eggshell finish or a semi gloss finish. You cannot clean flat paint and it looks so cheap
They make Washable flat paint now
This time I will use Woodglut plans for this.
A little lazy work....try using compound in the grooves to make it look like drywall...looks shitty just painting
Looks horrible. Best to slap some mud in the cracks, skim coat if necessary, sand and paint
