It works pretty well with 3-slot weapons, you don't even have to use the bolted mace replace method, just straight out edit your katana or something. I'm using the bolted mace so that I can add more mods to it. In the backpack editor the 4th field will just be blocked if your weapon is a 3 slot.

I had this same issue recently but I resolved it by opening the backpack editor and changing the element of that modded item to a normal item like a gun and when it applies just drop the weapon and it’ll be fixed
