I actually drove a similar one...James Young LWB S1. It gave me new respect for the chauffeurs who had to pilot them in city traffic. It was a real handful and no power steering. Being relatively narrow, it wallowed in even gentle turns. Mechanically, they were antiques the day were made. Even the transmission, which was one of the more up-to-date things about them, was an old GM version.

(My 1973 Mini didn't come with a radio from factory, and my Friends 1986 Ford Escort Popular had no cassette, player, cigarette lighter or a rear washer and wiper). My uncle worked for a local Triumph dealer, and had to fit heaters, radios and overdrives all the time. Power steering was a novelty, and most of the used cars my dad had when I was growing up in the 90's didn't have it. In fact, my neighbours 2001 Peugeot 106 doesn't have it, and that has hand crank windows and no central locking too! Same goes for auto's, only things I saw them on as a kid was BMW's and Jag's, they were considered slow, heavy and thirsty on fuel in smaller cars, and you only saw them on small cars if a person had a disability and couldn't use a clutch. My dad flat out refused to drive auto's until they became better over here in the 2000's he hated them that much. Even air con was a novelty until recently!

If by limos you mean most luxury vehicles, is because it's a premium, like this car was back then too. Nothing changed since this car was made and now, darling.
Limosines are useles today, Because they are too long. In urban areas parking and maneuvering are torture. So that limos replaced by wide and relatively long luxury sedans.
I think this car is called a limousine because it has enormous rear seat room, perfect for being chauffeur driven. Most people think of the stretch limousines like the Lincoln Town Car for example. On the other hand, this vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom limousine is really equivalent to the current generation Rolls-Royce Phanjtom EWB (extended wheelbase), at least in size.
Just amazing cars. I would love to see RR make a limo with the old body and modern running gear & electronics. I think it would be a huge hit. Not that I could afford one.
Very nice and high quality machinery. 44 year master mechanic here. My experienced ears were right again when I made the assumption the lifters were rattling badly in that engine and clicked pause 3 times before I could see the oil pressure gauge that was reflecting light and it showed NO OIL pressure at all. That engine either has no oil or the oil pump has failed and it also has a miss. BUT...this only needs to be fixed because the car is worth it! The 380 and 415 rolls Royce V8s are lifetime engines and it is the previous owner or other neglect that is not the fault of the car quality. In other words a PERSON caused the at hand problem
+Steven Meyer What do you mean by early? I am major believer in the 415 V8 myself being since I was a child we have three in our family and they are no trouble. But I do not believe any needed major major rebuilds as you state and that means you are a lame tongued person
To me, this body style epitomizes what RR is all about. Classic flowing lines which definately turns heads wherever this baby goes. In years past I used to see these floating around Beverly Hills and in the S. CA area. They were so well put together- and of such high grade materials, this is a lifetime car. In years past(don't know if it's still true) the hoods of these cars were sealed for the first 100,000 miles, where only a certified RR mechanic could touch the engine until that milestone.
Hey mate! you don't rev a badly out of tune, 55 year old engine. She's badly in need of a major service, no oil from gauge, possibly a hole or a bad join near the exhaust and lodging by the ammeter, the generator is on the way out as well. A lovely old lady indeed, but much in need of some love and attention.
It's possible the factory oil pressure gauge doesn't work anymore. The bourdon tubes fail on those gauges so they don't show pressure unless the entire assembly is replaced.
I had a business partner in Vienna (A) who allways sent me a Phantom V to the A/P for pick up. Made also trips to former Yugoslavjia and some Easter Europe Countries. Nice Car who even was drinking more tha we did. :-)
I love how the ignition setup hasn't changed hardly at all besides the addition of push button start and a few more switches but it's still in a black circle with the chrome flag switches
i always love the old versions of cars better than the new ones...2012 Rolls Royce cant hold a candle to the 1960 one's...even with modern tech...i love old school!
It always pains me to hear him rev the shit out of expensive cars right after he starts them up. Its about the worst possible thing to do to an engine.
+Matt Shoe Looking at the temperature of most of the cars when he revs it, it's either full up to temperature or close to. Not disagreeing with it being very bad to rev a cold engine, however.
Driving it out of a garage is not enough time for it to get up to operating temperature, so stop calling people idiots. However, it's clear that he let the engine idle until it was hot enough to rev it a bit. Jeeze you guys.
I let my old car run for a few minutes every morning before going to town. In the winter, I let it run on choke to help it warm up quicker, and rev the engine lightly once the idle stabilizes to disable the choke (electronic choke).
grandfather bought it at the age of 31, one year after it's release. Me and my father customized it. One of the features we customized are the seats, We took the cloth seat and took bought a two-seater car, we took the seats and fit them on where the cloth seats should be.
suomenpresidentti He also failed to mention the amp gauge bouncing around and while showing how nice the interior is he forgot to mention or show the wear on the drivers door pull. Along with the engine sounding not quite up to par, to address these things and the privacy glass I'd bet this Rolls will need over well over $10,000 in repairs right off the bat. Nice car indeed but not to mention these things while talking it up would make me leary about what else is needed after all it is a 1960.
Tacoma 55 you have to remember that hes not trying to sell the car, hes documenting a piece of automotive history and this was most likely the only classic rolls available at the time. He cant do anything about the issues.
Needs a new oil pump and most likely all 8 piston rings replaced. owning a classic car myself (though not a RR, I'm far from rich enough to buy one of these), I would probably replace the fuel pump as well.
I'm a Skippy and I drive on right of car and on the "right" of the road. I have a 1955 Silver Cloud, earliest made. My car was 3 models from power steering. While it might have GM auto trans, with Delco Remy :-) this a rare car. I'm surprised at what 5 years RR achieved this and mine . Trade in please, "-)
hey bro fuck what these lame ass people are saying. If they are such experts they would have youtube account with almost a million subscribers. keep up your videos they are informative and a nice snap shot of what cars looked like through out history.
Rolls Royce's engineers used to complain that the reason one could hear only the clock was "because it was so d*mned loud", and that they'd always intended to do something about it. I agree on the maintenance. That's not the sound I'd expected to come out of that car, in particular, regardless of its age.
OMG...poor thing sounds like a thrashing machine! My 59 Cloud II engine is barely heard when idling! A beautiful car by James Young, just not properly kept up by the sound of the engine!
For the record, we had power windows in our 54 and 57 Cadillac. The 57 had AC coming out of the trunk via two large "horns", one on each side of the back seat. Also had the electric eye auto-dimming system, power seats, etc. At that time, the Cadillac was considered a better car than the Rolls. The back seat in the Fleetwood was far enough back that it was almost a limo, which was rhe next model up.

Easily one of the most beautiful cars ive ever seen
Sir Stanley Royce the design is like if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
That Rolls-Royce is a masterpiece. 😍😍
Power windows on a 50-years old car... I'm simply stunned.
wasnt the stoneage... power windows on cars existed since the early 1940's
rockolutheran But the Mustang '69 doesn't have any Power Windows... So that's so suprising :D
Yeah, and i see they were even faster back then
My 2003 Corolla didn't even have power windows :(
Eric Stearns My old 93 Corolla didn't have power windows
When I saw the thumb nail my eyes literally just stared for a minute to embrace this car's beauty.

I love the sound the windows make

Gotta love the look of classic Rolls-Royces. I love Rolls-Royces! They're awesome!
I'm an old Roll's mechanic & that sucker is running on 7 cylinders.
Probably. British engineering wasn't exactly known at any point in history for being reliable. Had tons of character though.
I do not believe You or if so did You get fired? Factory trained?
Steve Prince Absolutely it is so open the oil filler cap with engine warm and it will smell/stink petrol

good luck ! and do noting else ok you can ceck the tyre pressiur if You want do not forget the spare one

A hot clean showroom piece none the less.

This is better than the new one
Ahmed Mohd what kinda shit are you smoking mate?
prettier maybe but not better
Maybe cooler but not better.
Ahmed Mohd I agree with you Ahmed mohd
Bruh imagine if this one was topless
This is such a cool car! The side pockets in the doors are amazing! And those windows are faster then the ones in my '95 Honda!
Also faster than my 2015 car
What a beautiful car.
Thanks for the good look over this elegant , dignified car.
I love looking at older model cars. This is a beauty 😍😍
I really like that you posted a new Rolls Royce and now an older one.
power windows and an auto transmission in the 1960s? wow this was very ahead of its time!

Now this is a Rolls Royce.
Gotta hand it to Kyle. More auto videos than a young dude should be able to do.☺ Keep them rolling.
That 1960 Rolls Royce Phantom Limousine James Young Series is gorgeous.
The engine sounds very rough especially on a Rolls Royce. I think it needs some work.
Terri Bel Bliss Not running on all cylinders
Agreed. But keep in mind the age of the Rolls plus he had the car door open are factors on that. Unsure of how many miles / kms the Rolls had done.
Probably needs new rings. Compression is probably off on all but one, and the ring is probably toast on one of them.
oil pressure sender unit is gone no thing els to do whit that engine
You are funny i like You
The fastest working electric windows I've ever seen, and they're fifty one years old at this point. Splendid.
that adel song sounded natural with the mood, sounded like something that actually could have been played during that time.
That radio takes me back to the good ol' days.
Love how the doors STILL close like a NEW Car. True beauty.

I must say this is a very WELL featured car for the 60s. Power windows seriously? I never knew they had such a thing in the 60s. Very well featured

I don't think Rolls-Royce would refer to the rear doors as their "signature suicide doors." Rolls-Royce refers to them as Coach Doors.
@bearitone64

I was thinking the same thing!!!, never rev up the old of an engi ,PLUS!!! it's not really about power back then but all about LUXURY!!,
It's possible the factory oil pressure gauge doesn't work anymore. The bourdon tubes fail on those gauges so they don't show pressure unless the entire assembly is replaced.
I have found with my Silver Cloud, when a gauge goes (3 - aperture, clock and radio that the problem was electric circuit.
Alan Steadman up
It's kept at a Rolls dealer I'm sure they keep the service up on it otherwise it wouldn't even run
I love that classic audio from the 60's :)
So much more beautiful than any of the crap RR is turning out today. You just can't beat old world craftsmanship.
Actually modern bodies are far superior in all respects except style.
Beautiful piece of history right here.
It's strange they didn't have underhood insulation to quiet the engine! Awesome, beautifully styled cars, great job.
that is the coolest car i have seen in a long time wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would guess Saudi Arabia.

Do you call a Spitfire's engine cover a bonnet as well?
Yes..Quite. It's a Rolls..so it has a bonnet.
British huh? Looks like this model is designed to drive on the right side of the road sooo hood!
Not all people are British dude

The back looks similar to the Rolls Royce Sweptail
That's because the design of the Sweptail was inspired by the classic Rolls Royce models.
