The Clash - Hate and War/The Israelites (live 1979)

- Live on Tyne Tees show "Alright Now" in 1979. This is time-stamped but in better quality than what is already on RUclips. Also, the only other version of The Israelites on RUclips doesn't have the original footage, only the audio.

I just found it on Facebook and like damn miss this type of real music
One of my great regrets is never seeing this band live.
So cool, i've never seen the Clash play "The Israelites" before!
Bill Hay.. Like 'Time is Tight' it song was a 'regular practice( & sound check )Number'
Ba'al Busters, what a load of bollocks.
@Ba'al Busters ,they didnt really want a riot of their own either
@Ba'al Busters They were never "promoted" by the industry at all...you are talking nonsense, troll
@Ba'al Busters Well just live happily with your "truth"...I'm out...I have no time for trolls who can't back up their posts with facts....peace....and have a nice life
So great. Wish there was more live Clash footage on RUclips. They killed both songs here. Can’t get enough of Mick’s guitar playing. Legend.
Violet Sky The guitar tone on this recording is right up front and absolutely killer!
There's a hell of a lot of Clash live footage on RUclips...
But this is excellent , the guitar sound & phasing is really good - I don't think they ever played 'Israelites' at a concert ? ( but it was done at soundchecks).
So much phaser
Just another incredible performance by The Clash. They have never truly received the respect that they deserve...to me, they are one of the top 3 bands of all time...behind only The Beatles and The Who. RIP, Joe...and Long Live THE CLASH!!
Clash is way better than the Beatles? Most underrated band ever vs most overrated. That's quite an interesting combo.
The Beatles didn't play live after 1965. Lennon made them stop because he hated how much they sucked live. He talked about it in an interview. Mostly, how Ringo could not play live. He also admitted that all of the TV performances were tapes because they had a drummer that couldn't keep time. Back then, bands did not play to tapes on TV. It made him kinda mad. The other guys understood that girls liked Ringo and it sold them a lot of records. George was with John on quitting playing live because it would ruin their reputation within three songs if they did.
The fact that only John has ever been publicly honest about it? I hope that makes you respect them less. It should
Meanwhile, The Clash and The Who both kill it live so I love them more.
The Rolling Stones, too. Especially when they had Mick Taylor on guitar. That era of theirs (late 60s through late 70s) was awesome.
@@juicicles5881 The Clash would have laughed you out of the room if you told them that the Beatles were overrated...but since they're not here, I will do it for them...and your story that they stopped touring because "they sucked" is a fabrication. They stopped because they did not have the equipment to play such big stadiums...50,000 screaming fans, they couldn't even hear each other...it was just chaos...and after getting threatened in the Philippines and all of the crap they took about John's "more popular than Jesus" quote, they decided it just wasn't worth it...and then they went on to create Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, and Abbey Road. Not only that, let me mention that they played 7-8 hour gigs 7 nights a week in Hamburg, Germany in the early 60's...know any other bands that have done that? You may not care for their music, but anyone who says that the Beatles are overrated just doesn't know a damn thing about rock 'n' roll...
@@stephenstone8480 Actually, John specifically said that the reason they didn't was the drummer couldn't keep up in an interview. He didn't want to damage their reputation.
Which is def overrated, as George's most famous solo was played by someone else on the record, too. Clapton. I follow rock and blues guitar closely and I've never heard of anyone else not playing their signature stuff on the album. :)
It is absolute gold and for both of you wondering about the presenter doing backing vocals ..........Denis "Den" Hegarty (born 13 September 1954, Dublin, Ireland) is a rock and roll, doo-wop and a cappella singer, television presenter, and now a psychology lecturer at Exeter College and with the Open University, but he is still singing. He has fronted an a cappella band called Slackapella, plus a 15-piece outfit called Soul Traders, and he still sings with the doo-woppers, The Metrotones.
They should have recorded Israelites in the studio. It's such a good cover.
I discover that they have taken this wonderful song "the Israelites" whose original often accompanies documentaries about The Clash! But hear it sung by themselves after the fabulous "hate and war" live version ... WoW ... this video is a treasure! thank you +++
Not a great version of the Iastlites tbh.
How the hell have I never seen this! Or maybe I have and I forgot? Anyway, thanks so much for uploading!
Mick loved the phaser over his guitar when they played live haha... 0:05
He sure did…. Really stands out here
how fast did 40 years go
Too bloody fast
Every cover version the Clash did just blew the original away I Fought the Law and Police on my Back spring to mind
This is amazing, never heard their cover of Israelites before.
Very cool! Love Joe and his incredible energy!
Great clip
The host looks exactly like Tenpole Tudor. Great footage.
Such an amazing and immense body of work they left. Seems I'll have the pleasure of discovering them for the rest of my life perhaps. Nothing and no one better than the clash nothing no one. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽Joe Strummer LIVES!!!💥🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🖤🖤💙💙💙💙

Thank You! i really needed to find this, on 3/1/22. Peace in Ukraine all the way from Nor Cali... x.
I tried to record this on the TV at the time and messed it up. Great to see it now. Thanks for posting it, John :-)

Never seen BEFORE!!! thank you
Excellent. I ve never seen this footage before 👍👍👍

Never seen this before, pure gold.

So frickin amazing.....🔥💪👊
what a treat!
Wow!
The only band that mattered!
It's so good to see the Clash covering a Ska song, this time in a rather rock n roll way.
brilliant...
Live.clash
Well.done
very good
Wooow....the Israelites
💥💥💥
Fucking hell they were amazing!
They were at their best in ‘79. At least that’s what I thought that night at the Armadillo.
Love The Clash but I can only wonder why they never played the cover of Israelite's too often.
I wish they had recorded it. So good.
@@violetsky5202 Thanks but I will stick to the original from Desmond Dekker.
@katoness suit yourself but I like the Clash’s version as well as the original.
I love the clash but I think that's tunes an untouchable one
@@kameronnaeole7680 100% Agree!!
some of the best footage is from the film "Rude Boy" - used to be on here but must have been removed bc of copyright
The Israelites !!!That fuckin contemporary as you get welcome to 2024 !
..got that right.. listening to this the day after Iran’s drone strike..
I wanna walk down any street dressed like a creep- brilliant.
A 40 years confinement...
Anybody know of another recording of Israelites or the rest of this one?
When Jones goes overboard on the bad effects that dominated the 80s.

Is that the guy from King Kurt?
Den Hegarty from Darts.
le vaucluse chantez moi ce beau pays
le mirage va exploser
That band could do no wrong. Although they began to do wrong after “London Calling”.
They still had some amazing songs on Sandinista! and Combat Rock though in my opinion.
je commence hair ce pays de chevre et de vache babe
Micks guitar sound just fucked up what could have been really cool!...great footage though thanks!
Mick went through a really weird stage where I think he just discovered effects pedals and got carried away haha
He was using a phaser. A lot of guitar players like to use them in the bridge sections of songs or solos but Mick kept it on the entire time haha.
tomcat

Clash live performances tended to tilt to the shambolic side: vocals out of tune/vocals over-projected; tempos too fast; Mick Jones using too many effects on his guitar, etc. (Glyn Johns, who mixed the Clash live album "Westway To The World" , said, "The bass player was on another planet!") The Clash were a great studio band. The myriad subtleties on "London Calling: & 'Sandinista" could never be reproduced in concert as an improvement on the original recordings. The Clash's studio work is where it's all at.
I enjoyed the Clash live.
This is rare footage of joe looking clean and healthy...the black tar took yet another one of our great artists
Joe always looked pretty clean and healthy. Wasn't it a congenital defect that struck him down?
@@Heston68 yeah, I think it was a heart condition
He died from a heart defect that kills mostly men suddenly, for example the American Actor John Ritter also died from the defect, I am sure that Joes heavy smoking habit had a lot to do with it, never heard that Joe Strummer was a junkie.
JOE RAN IN The very first London marathon in 1981 3:00 hours,,,no training!!!!!!!!! THIS MAN WAS FIT!!!!!!!!!And it came out on stage....joe was a FANTASTIC cross country runner at school,,,,,and carried that right through until the end WHAT A MAN,,,,, This is joe publicly,,speaking,,,,C,O,N, troll,,
Twas Topper using Heroin not Joe, they sacked him for it and he`s still allive.
