Building My New 2022 Inspired Hex Street Trials Bike!

- This must be one of the main highlights of the year, getting my new Inspired Hex for the upcoming season!
This year I wanted a brighter colour after a year on a more sedated (but cool) silver bike, I was keen on red but left the actual choice to Inspired themselves. Well they did an awesome job with all their new colourways across the models but I definitely think this Hex got the nicest one!
Other than the colour not many other changes have happened, I knew what I wanted geo-wise a few years ago when developing the new Hex and nothing has changes, the geo is spot-on and didn't need changing. All the other features like the sweet one-piece dropout/disc mount are unchanged as they work perfectly, as does the two-piece welded bb/yolk area etc
I'm also keeping most of the parts the same but just newer, only thing that's really different is the stem, it's a little shorter than my last one.
What do you think?
HUGE thanks to the following:

BTW this is the first video I've edited in my office and with my new mic...it sounded a bit reverby when editing in my headphones and main speakers but sounded good on the laptop and with other speakers I had, can people give feedback, does it sound alright?
Thanks so much for watching, I can't wait to get riding when my shoulder feels better.

Anything you’d change?
Your Magura MT8 Brakes would fit a lot better colourwise :)
Maybe with Yellow Rings (Not the Neon ones !) to match with the maxxis logo :D
More about the frame-- Curious why Inspired haven't gone for integrated headset on the headtube?
Ah mate that frame is pimp
I think it looks great, but if time and money were not a concern, I'd go with some raw alloy pedals and then strip the paint off the cranks!
Using grease on the headset
My absolute favourite videos from Ali are bike builds and therefore I'm stoked! Colour looks sick Ali!!
Yes, I like the commentary, reminds me of Allen Millyard and there isn't usually any stupid music.
Glad you're keen on the build videos guys! :)
@@Ali_Clarkson the retro bike builds are awesome too especially the giant trials team
The reincarnation of 2017 Arcade. Lovely
Really appreciate the non-sponsored parts reviews, (tires, brakes).
haha thanks, the thing is I feel far happier about reviewing parts that I paid for than reviewing parts I'm sponsored by (much to the annoyance of my sponsors I'm sure), I like to think that if I'm sponsored by a brand then that speaks loudly about my opinion of the product.
I only ride dirt jump bikes, but ,when a new bike build from Ali drops I become a trials bike groupie again, they just look so tight and unbreakable.
I watch you all the time and you explain everything and helped me learn trackstands, thanks mate! happy xmas and hollidays. from Broome W.A.
happy to help, glad you like them :D
What an amazingly beautiful bike that is! Last time I was so stoked was when I first saw the 2017 Arcade. Astonishing!
That colour is awesome Ali, can't wait to see it in action!!
Wooooow! That is amazing as usual. Really great looking bike! Love it! Really interesting to see your long time brakes testing too.
Thank you!
AUGH ITS BEAUTIFUL
No seriously, so tidy, so symmetrical, I love it. Great content, keep it up Ali.
Lovely colour, great looking build. Look forward to seeing it in action.
Thanks Peter :)
Looks amazing!! Patiently waiting for mine to arrive!
you'll love it I'm sure!
so much want, it looks stunning in that red!
A sweet ride I'm hoping to get a inspired next year love the bike and get back into my trials again
Hell yeah! Bike build!
Insanely Beautiful!!!
Absolutely stunning colour!
Love the silver/chrome! Colour coordination is very important. 😄
Thanks Bruce :)
It's strangely therapeutic watching your bike builds. Nice bike as well.
Always good to hear :)
Sickest trials bike I’ve ever seen!
People think building a bike is actually much harder than it is. Great vid , love the bike.
Red maketh the bike, great build, looking forward to you riding this when your shoulder is better!
That bike looks perfect Ali!!
thanks buddy :)
looks so sick. I love all your bike build videos.
Thanks dude :)
That frame is beautiful! Such a nice colour!
looks even nicer in person!
La bici es preciosa. Buen trabajo Ali
You can avoid the need to bleed the brake aft taking the hose out by pumping the brake lever so the pads touch together before undoing the brake hose. When you lever the pads apart after reconnecting the brake hose, any air bubble that's in the brake hose will be pushed into the reservoir, where it will no longer be under pressure when the lever is pulled.
hadn't thought of that...might try it next time thanks!
Matches the bike-stand!
That's one hell of a Christmas bike!
just needs some green parts to really make it christmasy :P
the gx cranks looks so sick man
Great vid! Bike looks RAAAAAD! Get well soon (shoulder).
Thank you :)
Wow that looks sooooo nice!!!
Thanks Cliffy :)
Agree love my Hayes Dominion already sold 2 bikes but the brakes have stayed with me. So little maintenance too
Reminds me of the Christmas ornament red Arcade. Looks amazing!
just needs some green parts I guess :P
Looks Great!
Thanks again Joel :)
Love it the colors are badass
Thank you :)
looks really nice.
Those chrome rim graphics by Lucy @Indibike look amazing 😉👌❤
haha don't they just!
Awesome bike! I think with black stem and silver headtube spacers would look even cooler
yeah I'm still torn...I might try that at some point :)
nice
nice new moggy as well 😁
I'm curious how the Hayes brakes feel compared to Shimano Saint and Magura MT7's, as Hayes has been very much off my radar since the Hayes Nine about 20 years ago. Hayes now own Answer/Manitou and Sun Ringle though, so they're quite a significant component company under the radar.
I wouldn't even consider Shimano for a trials use because of the wandering bite point issue with every generation of their brakes after they moved to a cylinder shaped reservoir on the lever. I really like the MT7 brakes I'm running on my trials bike and my XC bike, really consistent bite point in both applications, and more modulated delivery of power for stops where the grip is low than Shimanos. Magura and Shimano also run mineral oil, so less maintenance and less dangerous than DOT fluid, but I've had very little trouble with DOT fluid Hope brakes either, so I won't write the Hayes brakes off based on the fluid.
This was the brake they made to try and bring back the name they once had, it's their take on what a perfect brake should be and I think they just about nailed it! The lever feel was what sold me initially...you've never felt a brake with a lever action this light trust me! They specifically aimed for this feeling and fitted specific seals, bearings etc and made it so there's zero dead stroke, it's sublime.
The crosshair centering adjusters on the calliper are one of those "why didn't they think of this sooner?" ideas, I've never had a brake this easy to set up rub free before.
Power-wise they're the best compromise of bite and modulation I've felt from a brake, I can lock the wheel easily yet pull a stoppie with no worries.
I've not had any maintenance issues either, no leaks, sticking pistons or wandering bite points, just reliable power.
So yeah, I'm keen!
Simply Wonderful
Thank you :)
Amazing build dude! Some ewings cranks would perfectly match the chrome theme! ;D
couldn't agree more although my wallet disagrees :(
It looks so good! :D
Thank you :)
Looks awesome 🤩🤘
Thanks Jim :)
Looks awesome dude
cheers!
This Looks 🔥
strong build

Thank you!
That'll more than do pig ❤️🙏🏻👍🏻
Best bike so far and such a tarty colour 🔥
haha thanks!
Such an epic bike!
Thank you :D
Really nice looking bike 🔥
Thank you :)
Headset install rocks
it always makes quite the impact!
You saved my day 🙏🙏
Sick bike
How is Ali not sponsored by Home Depot with a line of signature headset tools?
Seriously its that kind of thing that makes Ali’s builds so great.
It got me to move on with a project using a similar tool.
My thanks.
wonderful beautiful!
thank you :)
Such a cool bike! Reminds me of the chrome red arcade you had a few years back
still got that bike :)
@@Ali_Clarkson sick! one of my all time favourite bikes!
Love your videos man. Wonderful entertainment! “Or sher” I’m dead xD
haha that was my favourite joke too :P
Love it makes me wanna save for 1 and start learning
Thanks Jason :)

Yeees! Favourite video!
Dream bike✌🏼
wow amazing^^
Hide under a duvet next time your recording audio and it'll take that empty room echo feeling it has. 👍
Nice bike build. 👍
nice color
agreed!
Perfect Color ))
agreed :)
I saw an inspired in my hometown the other day and although i know you and the boys all ride them, i instantly thought of Ali C. Lol
oh yeah? Where's this?
@@Ali_Clarkson Ann Arbor, Michigan. United States.
What brake rotors are you running? I have a four play with tech 3 trial zones. I would like to upgrade to 203mm in the back. What rotors do you suggest? Also what adapter will work for that?
I remember that for a while lightweight bikes were made from magnesium. I wonder if any trials frames are made from it
I loved it ali
cheers :)
The frame matches your bike stand 🙃
haha it does!
Ali, have to say, I think that red paint job is fantastic, looks to be about a perfect match to the tone of the hubs and work stand. I'm thinking you won't like that Hope stem, not because it's silver, but because it looks about 20mm shorter than on your previous build. Looking at it complete, for/to me, I think a black stem and silver headset spacers and bar would look really sweet, also, I'd be looking to some baking soda/stripper and stripping those cranks and polishing them up. Heck, looking at it again, maybe even getting the stem powder coated to match the frame would look sick.
Curious how wide those 2.2" Ikons measure on those i38 rims? Guessing they're closer to 2.4".
Lastly and sadly, you were doing so good on build and style points, right up until you installed the tyres with tyre name/specs and not brand logo by the valve stem, especially on Maxxis as it's only on one side :-p :-D
Yeah I might agree on the stem, I've been running a 95x25 which I've been liking but I have found my manuals and spins aren't what they used to be. This 70x20 is a little shorter but doesn't feel too bad but we'll see once I get out riding it. Not the end of the world to swap stems. You're the second person to mention silver spacers so perhaps I should try it (as well as a powder coated stem...I like that idea!)
Yeah the tyres come up larger because of the rims, not sure how big...maybe not 2.4 but not far off.
Sorry about the logos :( I did try to spin the tyre on the rim when I did the back tyre but it wouldn't budge and I was too lazy to change it, I then copied it with the front wheel. I'll sort it out when my new tyres come ;) (tan wall Ikons anyone?)
Was actually thinking about the stem being shorter and thinking that being you do have a shoulder injury, you might actually like the bit shorter reach while recovering and might find then that you actually like it once recovered.
Not hard to grab a few pics with the silver stem and get them in an image editor to see how a red stem to match would look. Definitely think that a silver bar would be needed to properly compliment it though.
Hahaha, no worries, wondered how come you aligned the tyres like that as you usually do the brand logo to valve. Everyone gets a bit lazy sometimes, but my OCD with that sort of stuff doesn't let me let it stay LOL.
hey Ali, I really like your content and would love to know more ins and outs of wheel building. unfortunately, you don't have one on an already build wheel? Might be a cool niche.
How can your cute thief do so well on color coordination?
My cute thief totally screwed up mine.. fork has a different color, even the left crank is different from the right crank arm...
Freshyyyyyy
The Colour is amazing btw....red bikes rule!
Fantastic bike build! The silver on red is really beautiful! On a side note, can you tell me where to get the specifications for making a chain tensioner like yours? Thanks!
Thank you :) Send me a message on Instagram @aliclarkson and I'll send you a diagram
So with the hex coming with 180 mm mounts is there a reason one would run smaller rotors (like a 180mm) on a trials bike? It seems like you’d want to almost run the largest rotors possible like in your case with the 203
awesome
ooh, ali got a bmx too!
not mine!
Looks incredible Ali! Nothing beats a freshly built bike, fresh tyres especially haha. Curious to know what length you run your fork steerer to? As I understand you specify the Pro version forks.
After riding my Hex team for a year now (blue 2020 version) my only complaint is the fork steerer is a little bit short for my liking. I’d love to be able to run even an extra 5mm spacer under the stem but the top cap won’t reach the thread. A real shame as there’s still just enough steerer there for the stem to securely clamp on to. It would mean new forks which sadly aren’t available.
it depends on the stem I'm running, I don't like super high bars so I often cut it down slightly
Hi fella
Just starting out on trials ..
52, fat and a metal elbow, I've got a 2021 flow, fully loaded, but not sure about the size, I'm old school 26" rider,
Building a old hex up at the moment, rim rear disc front
What would you received for this, hope front magura rear ?
Cheers
That colourway should be named "Lickable red".
well it's Candy red which I guess is the same thing :P
Love the videos Ali!
Quick one, what tyre pressures do you typically run for street trials?
Thanks
Thank you :)
Depends on the tyre and terrain I’m riding but with the Maxxis Ikons for typical street trials (tubeless with Rimpact inserts too) I’m at around 38psi
my first bike was red so this is the best looking bike yet.:}
the only thing that's missing is a red mini bell
everyone knows red bikes are the best
The bike looks sick! Love the build. How many tooth on the cassette and chainring?
Hey Ali, is that hope stem 80x40, if so is it your preference over the 90x35?
Anyone knows any 160mm cranks with 29mm spindle/axle that will fit my street trials?
Bike looks great! If that's a Rohloff Revolver chain tool hanging in your garage, I just wondered why you did't use that on the chain to mushroom the joining chain pin?
It is (it’s actually Danny’s I keep on forgetting to give it back!) although I don’t think it really does the job any better than the one I use, not enough for me to bother getting it out of the box anyway haha
@@Ali_Clarkson ah hope Danny doesn't see this video then... haha. I once noticed the first chain link to get a bit wobbly on my chain was where I made the join, so I started using the Rohloff tool to mushroom the pin but it sounds like you have never had that issue. Thanks.
Ikons over tabletops? Nice build video Ali =)
Tabletops are my second favourite tyres, the Ikons work a bit better as an all-rounder though plus I find tabletops a little looser and can blow off the rim which isn't ideal
@@Ali_Clarkson thanks for the reply. I've been watching your videos since 2017, keep it up man \m/
only thing you need now are those red 510s you used to wear.
AAAA 😍😍😍
Hi ALi, you are use 175 mm cranks?
Have you weighed it? I would be interested to know how much weight you saved compared to the stock build.
Just weighed it and it’s 10.2kg… a little heavier than I’ve built in the past but I don’t think lightest always means best
Sickest build yet too bad they just came out with the silver Dominion brakes
oh yeah? I think I may need to place an order :P
hope brakes in red and hope cranks in silver would be insane ngl
not a huge fan of Hope brakes and I've seen too many snapped axles to really trust their cranks just yet.
@@Ali_Clarkson i mean, it would look better, but yeah i've never really used hope brakes either
First I click the like button, then I watch the video
the perfect order :D
Now the old frame can get a permanent front suspension fork!
maybe...watch this space
@@Ali_Clarkson I once built up my Namaiki DSY (24" trials/street bike long before Inspired.) with a Judy XL with DHO lowers and a drop crown upside down. Fun and Beefy. And for the record... I was with the company before Poser Brad stole it from the founders.
Really loved this cheesy video! 🧀😂
cheesy? :P
👌
Hey Ali, why don't you try running hope or trickstuff brakes?
Not a huge fan of Hope brakes and Trickstuff is out of my budget (looks nice though!)
@@Ali_Clarkson yeah I was looking at them once and my jaw dropped at the prices and delivery times😅
