I hated being black when I was younger and it took so much for me to finally love my skin and my community. This is such a huge issue that is not fully addressed because black is beautiful and so many of our youth don't feel that way. Black love, black power, and black lives matter 🖤

Theyre half white in the show and Beats is bi-racial in real life. Its not about self hate, its a deeper question than that and one that Van was already struggling with before her sister said anything. She said "you chose black" but what she was really saying is, "you chose to be a baby mama" its not the fact that Ern is black, but that Ern didnt ask her to marry him and it hurts her because does want to be married, she actually is uncomfortable being a baby mama.

What really got me about this scene when I first saw it wasn't the self hate, though it was very apparent, but that because Van fell in love with Earn, had a baby, and chose her lifestyle (aka "chose black") that she set herself up for failure AND THAT WAS OKAY BECAUSE SHE "chose black". That's just fucked up! Just because YOU'RE BLACK or choose to live your life a certain way does not mean you're a failure, and her implying that really pissed me off.

Alex Woodard I agree with you 100% It's definitely an increase! And you have to be very careful with black women, more then ever nowadays! Because our sisters seperating themselves from the black man daily. This was the 1st episode I ever watched of Atlanta but I thought it was very heavy! Earn is the typical struggling black boyfriend that comes from the hood trying to hold on to whatever he can because he has nothing. Van is becoming the new modern day black woman who is "exploring self" and looking pass the black man to a white guy. And the white guy of course has ALL the answers and knows "what love is" while Earn struggles. I just think this is showing black men in a bad light in front of black women as they usually do. And to run to white men.

Interesting... In Korean culture, it's a term of endearment in a sense. Only closest family and some friends will identify someone through their oldest child's parentage. Typically when children are around as to not gain a behavior where they start calling elders by their first names. But the children don't use this same style if they're family. It sounds complicated but makes sense to those who grew up in or studied it.

Van's friend doesn't seem to like her identity as a black woman. She said that Val "chose black", which pretty much means she thinks Van chose wrong. For her, it's a surface-level comparison, since Van chose not to hang out with her as much, but, that was because the girl's friend, Melanie, was judgemental and rude to Van.
The biggest tell is Van's recall of her friend saying that she wished she had kinky hair, though she grows naturally kinky hair Van's friend just straightens it, while pretending that it's not to have the same hair texture as a heavy majority of black women. It's a way to distance herself, not that black women can't/don't straighten their hair. I doubt many claim that it's natural though

I know I’m probably the least qualified person to say this but…I do get why a black person would think this way. It’s sad, but I do get it. America’s not kind to anyone who doesn’t fit the designated bill.

his brother who co-writes says they don't really write with an agenda or message, they just put out what happens and the experiences of people. they're not trying to make you think anything, but since it's presented through media it forces us to take a different perspective.

@@prenuptials5925 I actually think it's the opposite. Donald Glover understands both sides of the black experience without preaching about it. Also I like how they tackled how black people come from different cultures and are not mixed with black and white. It was also nice seeing Van speak German
