Mp5 just another longarm that you wont have when you need a gun and it doesnt hit all that hard, especislly not with subonic ammo. When allowed to cycle normally, a LOT of noise comes out of its breech and eveyone knows what that sound is.

For our remote undisclosed location HQ we went with a surplus Vietnam-era backpack tactical nuke from eBay. We bought two (one to make sure they worked - using a simple trip wire to trigger and voila! - it worked). Of course we tested it underwater at a nearby lake so as not to cause a commotion. Additionally, as a side benefit, we caught a lot of the stunned fish in the lake from the blast and had dinner for days. Oddly, they were mostly pre-cooked once we gathered them up.

But yes, I’m grabbing my 14.5 if I need to be dynamic with one weapon.
Food for thought though, at 10’ my shotgun’s 00 buck spread is inside C-Zone. 9 pellets one trigger pull. This can shrink with better barrels and ammo. If I’m not going to be Dynamic, and I have something like a stairwell or choke point where I know my shot will stop if I miss, okay. Furthest distance in my house is the entry hall, into the living room, 20’. Everything else is much closer.

Suppressed 11.5 sbr/ar pistol is a great option for home defense. Throw a WML on there and you're pretty much set. You could take this a step further and get like a 7" or 8" suppressed 300 blackout. Those things are pretty quiet and you won't damage your hearing. A suppressed 11.5 5.56 is still pretty loud indoors but you won't blow your ear drums out. A 300BO with subs is like the same noise as a friggin air rifle or something. They're really quiet.

keep in mind the terminal ballistics are poor with subsonics in 300BO. Supersonic ammo will do lots more damage. If you are gonna do subsonic, they u may as well just do a .45 pistol with subsonics- the difference in damage is not that big between the 300BO and 45acp with subsonics.

With all due respect to the pro, I disagree on the shotgun. My 18" 20g Remington pump 870 puts a 3" hole in sheetrock at 15ft using #6 birdshot. At 20ft, it's a 6" pattern with a core hole of about 1.5" Penetration of birdshot is 1-1/2 rooms. Buck is 3 rooms. Both do NOT include room where the shot id fired. A 5.56 can easily go through 3 rooms with enough punch to kill someone. So, there is that to consider.
A .38 special, at 920FPS / 2" barrel may go through a wall and into a second room, but have little energy left. That same lead round nose 158 grn bullet shot through a 6" barrel will travel at about 990-1020FPS and can easily injure or kill someone in the second room -if the bullet does not disintegrate along the way.
For those not well trained or shoot infrequently, the shotgun is the King of Home Defense, hands down. Yes, in the hands of someone very familiar with the rifle, it will be extremely effective. But, whether the rifle or shotgun, both need to be aimed from the shoulder and accuracy counts.
Think about it: What house or apt has an open space of more than 18ft? 20 at the max. Most typical American homes are not the 4,000 sq ft barns you see in the real estate rags. At close defense ranges, buck or birdshot is devastating.
Right now, I am sitting with my back to an outside door, 9 ft behind me. The room is 12 feet wide - a former attached garage. I wear a pistol because the shotgun would be too slow to bring into battery. So would a rifle. In fact, if someone actually was successful in kicking in the door, I would be dead before I could spin around a draw. So, that door has been made very secure.
All three types have a role, but the shotgun, used with prior awareness of an attack, is the best solution for most people. Sheet rock repair is easy.
    Jus' sayin'

I tell them 80% of people survive pistol wounds, and a shotgun is super loud, kicks like a mule and essentially doesn’t form a pattern at close range. I tell them the best option is something you can shoulder that has 30 rounds in it, preferably with a shorter barrel. Pistol or rifle caliber, but rifle is superior.

Ruger PCC. Small, accurate & heavy af for its size (if you go winchester you can just club 'em like a harp seal). The weight mitigates most of the recoil impulse, so the wife & kids love it. Heavy usually means "sucks," but we're not keeping a f'king Viking raiding party at bay here, right? Also have a CZ Scorpion that was my favorite PCC - until I got this one.

    • @KeterMalkuth
      @KeterMalkuth 8 дней назад

My issue is this; pistol calibers are pretty anemic. Yeah, they'll do the job, but the only reason we use 9mm is because we can't fit 5.56 in a Glock mag. If you're already working around something the size of a rifle, why *not* use the most lethal option possible? A well tuned AR will already have less recoil than most 9mm PCCs. 5.56 is stopped by drywall easier than 9mm. It's more lethal. It's louder, that's a fair point to make, but any gun fired indoors without earpro will be deafening and disorienting.
Use what you have and what you feel comfortable with, that's true, but IMO if I'm choosing a long gun for home defense, it'll be some kind of rifle caliber.

Poor muscle memory will get you killed. If you train more with an AR type rifle.. She's the winner. Yeah I’ve never understood people acting like a shotgun spreads so much you don’t have to aim it or you’ll have such an insane spread within most homes. My home has one land to 12.5 yards. At that range with my Vang comp barrel and Fiocchi cheap buckshot I’m at 4.5 inches on paper. If you make it federal flite control 8 pellet (which I use) it’s like 2.5. I pick a shotgun due to less concussion than an AR and less trigger pulls to achieve what I want. To each their own though.

I prefer my keltec KSG loaded with 22 aguila mini shells. I’ve patterned it enough and to the point I’m confident that within my home, the spread is manageable. I know I wouldn’t need 22 c shells but it’s very easy for my wife to shoot with the mini shells, she can hit a bowling pin at 25 yards reliably and follow up on a second one with relative ease, which is farther than the longest shot in my home. I like the design of the KSG because it’s closer to the body than a standard pistol shooting position.

@ no problems at all. I do know the first iteration had some problems. Having said that, the only short stroking issues I’ve seen with the newer model from others is a training issue. Shotgun Short barrel w/ stock, and flashlight. Shoots a pattern. Greater chance of hitting target. Less chance of going through wall into neighbors. Two hands on it. Greater retention, and can be used as a bludgeon. Sound of chambering a round might be a deterrent.

You’d be surprised how tight shotguns patterns hold. If you live in a mansion, you may have concerns with shotgun pattern spreading, but the average middle class bedroom hallway or living room isn’t big enough to matter. The shot will hold and transfer slug like energy levels.

I'm certainly not going to argue with an expert because anything you use that protects your family (and yourself) is okay with me. But a rifle may have unintended consequences, depending on the rifle for home defense. You gotta know your background. Rifle rounds, again depending on the rifle, can penetrate and exit home walls, doors, etc. and into the neighborhood or the next apartment, etc. Shotguns may necessitate the services of a carpenter and drywaller after the fact, but probably not the services of the EMTs...except for the perpetrator.

Amusing observations aside, the hole in the drywall is insignificant compared to the loved one who might be behind the drywall. So don’t miss.

When i was a kid a few of us would go over to a friends house. The boys that lived there were brothers and at night we'd all sleep in the same bedroom when we spent the night. There stepdad would usually come home drunk late at night and if we were up playing and making noise he'd just cut lose with his pistol and shoot 3 or 4 holes through the bedroom wall about head high to a grown man or a little higher and yell "you boys shut up and go to bed in there". 😂 Cant remember what caliber or make the gun was but the bullets dam sure always came straight through the wall. I remember feeling pressure come off one when we were jumping on the bed one night. I though i had been hit.

The list: Crossbow, Black powder firearms, Spear, Tomahawk's(as in more than one😊), various other cutlery, oooooooooorrrr my regular pistol, or my shotgun or my rifle. Or I just use my big ass hammer. DECISIONS DECISIONS 😊

What about things behind the wall? Shotgun runs out quick where rifle might go through the wall, wave "hi" as it flies over your kids heads and still goes see the neighbours. I love your take on lots of things but I am not 100% on this one. Learn to fix dry wall and vacuum. Keep every innocent around you as safe as possible. Shotty for the win in my book.

The first line of defense is a good barrier and alarm system. Something that will slow the invader down and alert you if you've been breached. No gun is going to save your ass if you're passed out and the guy is already in the room.

yeap... 10/10. some cameras and motion sensor activated flood lights will do a lot already and it's not wrong to plant some thorny roses or shrubs in front of seemingly accessible windows to discourage would be thieves. i also heard that dogs are a major deterrent. that may be enought to send them on their way to easier prey.
