- A behind-the-scenes look at Costa Georgiadis, before he became the bearded face of Gardening Australia.
Replacing the ‘almost irreplaceable’ Peter Cundall and Stephan Ryan, Costa took GA to a new level when he was unleashed on the ABC audience in 2012. With his style as part clown & part guru, Costa is now one of the most famous gardening faces in the country.
At the beginning of his role on GA, Costa established his community verge garden in his street in Bondi. The verge is now home to a street library, compost system, bathtub worm farm as well as indigenous plants and vegies.
He attended Rose Bay Primary School and his first performing role was in a Grade 3 play. Not surprisingly Costa was the king in the play but was deposed by none other than TV star Larry Emdur (who currently co-hosts the Morning Show). Costa: “It was a pivotal experience. I was taken down! I have trying to get back ever since.”
Costa took a turn on the Red Faces talent quest on Hey Hey it’s Saturday around 1989 as a member of the Hellenic Rebirth Brothers. Around the same time he was on the Ray Martin Show competing in a Bathroom Baritone competition, which required singing in the bathtub. He also sings in a band, the More Please Orchestra. They do one gig a year as part of the annual Beardstock festival in Bondi.
Costa’s Pappou (grandfather) was a market gardener and that’s where Costa learnt about growing food. His grandmothers were the ones that taught him the importance of cooking and eating. His Pappou was obsessed with composting and building up the soil.
His number two love after gardening is sport. He was a member of local RSL youth club and was also a gymnast. Cost is also is a rugby referee: "For me my rugby refereeing is meditation. I turn up and for that 70 or 80 minutes the world is turned off and all I’m focused on is what’s happening on the field.”
Surfing at Bondi is another passion.
Costa is a qualified Landscape Architect and studied at the University of NSW. As a student he used to mow lawns in Coogee but to make cash to travel overseas after graduating, he worked as a clown at Darling Harbour. Costa took off to Europe where he worked on and off for the best part of a decade working on roof-top gardens, community composting, natural swimming ponds and wetlands working in Vienna, Austria and Bavaria. Costa’s linguistic skills include German, French, Czech, Greek and English.
Costa’s school friend Sean Kennedy studied to be a filmmaker and Costa appeared in one of his graduating films, the topic was the greenhouse effect. Costa: “I am a person that becomes a plant!” This collaboration continued, and together Sean and Costa pitched the Costa’s Garden Odyssey idea to SBS via an independent production company. The show went for 25 episodes on SBS, but the broadcaster wasn’t able to extend the series. Costa says, “I’m forever indebted to SBS because they backed me. I mean who would have backed a talking scarecrow, garden gnome, half man, half hedge? None of the other stations would have ever gone near me.”
Costa has been on GA since 2012, but he is already an institution. Costa: “This is this awesome opportunity to do so much. GA is such a relevant program, with such tradition. I can combine everything I think is important - food production, the environment and the community. From the ‘get grubby’ side to bringing more young people and families into gardening.”
The Beard
Costa’s beard is also almost 30 years old! He started growing it when he was overseas. He was in Egypt and got sick. “I was crook and couldn’t be bothered shaving. I never shaved again.” Would he shave it off for charity? “I would want a million dollars for each year, so let’s say that the price tag is 30 million bucks. I would sit down at the table for $5 million. If you want to see this happen, you had better do it soon as the price is only going to go up!”

Look out for the Christmas special and we'll be back for Season 31 in the new year.
Kosta when you finish from all these please come and fix my garden?
How good do those natural swimming ponds look!?
they are in Centennial Park
I bet he’d love to lose that blasted beard - he’s very good looking without it, but I guess it’s his “brand”. Good on you Costa!
The beard must have gardening tool in there man. Who needs a shed
I like your Videos but your beard is to wild! 🤪
He should learn how to pull out of a wave before he runs over people
Hey mate he's a local. Local rules ya know.
The worst thing is seeing that beard and hair around food when he does cooking segments with guests. Yuk!! Isn't it time anyway that Gardening Australia became less Eurocentric - I would love an Indigenous Australian to replace Costa Georgiadis and perhaps the woman from South Australia could also be replaced to make a more equitable type of show, representative of Australia's First Nations.
Oh pluuueease. Get over yourself. Due to his Greek background, you feel he should stop and give someone else an opportunity to make a living? I tell you what. If someone better comes along, then we can talk.
