That first mvt theme reminds me of SP's belief, rooted in his religious convictions (Christian Science), that his melodic ideas were a product of divine inspiration- hence, they retained their independence/integrity even if he re-used them in other contexts. Such a mysterious, floating quality- frankly, I prefer a slower approach to it than is common, notwithstanding SP's own dry, modernist performing style.
