Clearing November Storm on Buffalo Southern Railroad
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 фев 2015
- Between November 13 and 20th, 2014 over 79.5 inches of snow fell on Hamburg, NY. During that time most major roads were closed. Many railroads were unable to move traffic. It took the BSOR 4 days for crew members to be safely able to reach the enginehouse. After a day of digging the locomotive out of the enginehouse, the Jordan Spreader finally was able to reopen the line. See this ex D&H spreader plowing north on the old Erie BS&W branch from Hamburg to BC Junction. By the time the plow was mobilized, the snow had become extremely wet and heavy. Enjoy the Alco RS-11 pushing it's D&H companion, spreader #35053. Enjoy!
I drank an energy drink half an hour ago, put this video on and fell asleep twice in 15 minutes. WHAT A VIDEO!
Thank you for sharing and narrating this rarely seen footage in American railroading.
Thanks for showing this - in my state this would be a treat for the kids. Saw snow here in St Augustine in March 1985, last time
Oddly satisfying watching the snow roll over. Also that is some power! I can barely shovel my driveway with the weight. Lol look at that weight!
As another old D&H'er, that was a little bittersweet. Those plows came in pretty handy in the Adirondacks in the winter, and were a fixture in places like Saratoga Springs.
I have to thank you for this video, I'm down in Angola so we weren't hit as hard by the snow, but I still remember it quite well. Really glad we get to see the cleanup from a railroaders perspective.
Honestly that's so awesome. I've always found moving snow in that certain way was very relaxing.
Thank you! The comments of the operator are helpfull to understand his work.
Alpha men at work!!! Love you guys!!
Awesome. It was as if I was riding the engine with you guys.
Dang it I would pay to be that plow operator, you wouldn't have to pay me. Excellent video many thanks indeed.
But... it’s not a plow
Very informative. Nice camera action and good narration. Thanks for posting. Job well done.
Thank you for a very unique video showing what rarely gets seen. Very nice!
Very cool little posting. Thanks!
It’s just incredible the amount of power trains have, moving all that snow effortlessly
Weight has a lot to do with it, too. If all you have is power, you'll just spin in place.
It is the locomotive who has power, not the train.
Thanks Pat, great video. We haven't gotten that much snow here in about 20 years, but the UP can bring one of their spreaders from Wyoming or California if they have to.
That’s suppose to be a no wake zone!🤣
Im from the area. It cool to see it from this point of view.
Great explanations! Thank you!
Awesome video! Not something you get to see every day. Thanks! Pat Lawless
Lake effect... gotta love it. And by love, I mean hate with an undying passion
Boomer - That’s why I left Buffalo and moved to Arizona: now I just deal with rattlers, scorpions and anything else that bites, stings or pricks. Haha
Great to see detail of your Jordan working!
Amazing and interesting footage. Thank you for sharing
GREAT VEDEO PAT WHO KNEW WHAT IT TAKES TO CLEAR SNOW ON TRACKS
phantasm one I knew
doing the Lord's work
Awesome Job and Awesome Video!
Operating that plow wing could certainly trash a dwarf signal. That would be an intense job if you had those signals.
I can't help but feel SO COLD while watching this!! Y'all must freeze inside the plow
That was very educational on how a Jordan spreader is used. Thanks for posting this. Is there a certain level of snow or density of snow where this equipment becomes ineffective to use? Any idea of how much pressure is being applied to push snow like this off the line?
With snow, the more wet and heavy it gets, the tougher it is to push out. There is a point where the load is too great out one side. If this happens, then might only use front plow and not wings. Then once the snow freezes in, or gets above wings, then the rotary is the only option. I’ve never had it get that bad on us. Keeping it pushed back makes room for the next big snow.
Great video!
wow the engine becomes almost like a ship or boat pushing the snow (like water) out of the way
IntheeyesofMorbo Like a cutter ship that breaks through ice.
this should be in a most satisfying things to watch video
Great job! Thanks
awesome video! thanks
Nice Video!!
really cool video thanks Patrick get some more this year if you can !
Lol, this kind of storm was the worst in our areas recorded history. They do say due to climate change these storms should get worse as time goes on, so maybe sometime again we can see these ALCo's pushing more snow haha
snow train ask him we need mad
Full on heart attack snow, real wet and heavy. It's so heavy it's even straining this equipment.
@sardu, Good observation about the wet snow. I kind of didn't pick up on that but on review, I saw it. Thanks. Good on ya mate.
great video & narritation
My question is how much paint was left on the spreader after use, it looked pretty beat up at the start.
Good Grief! WOW! We had a record breaking snowfall this past winter of 4".We were shut down amost a week.
Jerry Traveler lmaooooo...where are you... Atlanta
Thanks for loading this video. It appears to me that that plow was designed to handle much deeper snow than it was this date. I would have thought the BSORR had backhoes to help shovel the snow away rather than just hand labor. What say you?
I'm begging for it to START snowing here! You are begging for it to stop!
81.2 inches on Hamburg, Ny for the Nov 2022 storm
In The Netherlands, the entire train schedule falls apart with just 1 cm of snowfall.
In the USA...
Nice video! Thank you for sharing. Wish the lens could zoom out more. Often seemed too close-up.
Surprised railroaders did not stay athenginehouse so they could gethe line open sooner. (I stayed at my fire station so we could dig out and not be stuck at home unable to get in.) Do thengine wheelslip much?
We had gone home (I live 45 minutes away) and didn't have the snow. Once the event started, the towns decided to close the roads and stop plowing in many cases, making travel impossible. Thankfully we aren't the emergency service like the fire or ambulance, so it wasn't quite as critical to be there.
I worked in Euclid Ohio at the time the back of the parking lot is ns I remember the trains from ny the back end of the cars was snow from bottom to the top
I must have had it on the wrong speed. it was barely moving
Buffalo does not have the pristine snow as found in Minnesota
You guys need a rotary plow methinks 😀
Does that snow plow have a horn?
Wow
Nice video, do you work for the BSOR?
Yes I do
I believe Lake Erie stays a lot warmer than the rest of the Great Lakes during winter. This of course gives for a stupid amount of lake affect snow.
There is a 3 city snowfall contest every year between Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. I don't recall Buffalo winning year after year...
@@chrisE815 When I look at where Rochester is on the map, it looks like it's in the best place for when the wind is from the north or NW (Lake Ontario in this case). So I'll go with Rochester out of those 3. Kind of the same deal for Marquette MI.
Are the local police informed before you go over a bridge knocking snow on the highway below?
Hey I love bsor I hope to see you and nick at the fair train this year. And please when you can find out can you tell me when you find out the dates to the fair train!!!!:) also subscribe nice vid!!!!)
Safe safe stay safe
That’s what I need lol😂
nice video , i did notice a couple of buildings collapsed, under the weight of the snow i guess
Martin Zecha this ok
What was the wrecked brick building complex from about 3:50 onwards? Looks bombed out!
It was a line of shops, you could still see the Mr. Tire sign out front
That's allot of snows
Nice video!
coming from someone who lives where it doesnt snow, and the nearest snow is thousands of miles away, couldnt you use like a modified blow torch to clear the snow away from the door? again pls excuse my non snow understanding haha. its crazy, where does all that snow go but? like melts obviously but doesnt it flood when it melts?
fhhsvnggbh We used to use a small jet engine to clear off aircraft. Hot bleed was bled off the engine compressor section, directed thru a four inch hose at eighty psi. Worked well in powder snow but not heavy wet snow. A blow torch idea is inefficient, turning the snow into a block of ice. Best bet is to just relocate the snow and wait till spring.
Yeah it'll melt but then it'll flood and freeze again turning the work area into an ice rink.
Dunno why that garage doesn't have inward swinging main doors. Otherwise they would have only had to manually shovel the personal door.
Public Buildings have to have outward opening man doors in case of fire. As for the garage doors, they usually aren't a problem. This snow just began to melt and formed an slushy mess right up against the door so we couldn't open it.
Did snow and ice ever derail one of these?
Many times.
why bring the plow up going over the bridge? works better on the ground
The front plow is a flanger (moves up and down to clean between the rails. Many bridges have center guard rails that the plow would hit otherwise.
Looks like powdered sugar
i was thinking the same, like id try and eat it. can you eat snow???
You can if it's freshly fallen and free of contaminants. Just about all outdoors training, including the boy scout handbook mention using it for a drinking water source.
Just avoid the yellow snow
I notice the rails at the top are very clea
Is it a Alco 5 39 engine?
No, these are the 251 engine.
That plough seems rather old technology. Air operated instead of hydraulics, cannot be operated while ploughing... they would need a newer model to get more efficient.
So what, it works and that is what matters. There are Jordan spreaders designed and fitted with hydraulic cylinders and controls instead of air. These machines are maintenance of way equipment and are used as needed but are very expensive not only to buy but to operate. The main use of a Jordan spreader is clearing ditches and reprofiling the cuts. Plowing snow is a high secondary use. They usually weigh almost as much as a locomotive to be able to stay on the track. I have seen where a 10 or 12 foot cast iron signal base was rooted out of the grade and shoved over by a Jordan .
UNREAL!!!!!!!
Better slow down this train. My heart can't take this much excitement at one time!
При такой съёмке не видно что и как убирается, неинтересно!
plow faster
It is better with a little speed to it!
Broken joiner send the locomotive right off the tracks.
I don’t care how good the tracks are.
They can’t see the rails so...
TWSS
They are unionized members. They are in no hurry They are getting paid overtime All most 89 dollars a. Hour Paid by the hour. Slow train equals more money Only in America
Bruce Kwak not even close to 89 z
Liable to find bodies in there.
Buildings collapsing? Obviously not proper buildings
cosgrove 80 inched of that wet shit would do it lol
It was an extremely heavy snowfall, worst our area ever saw. A lot of flat roofed buildings couldn't handle the weight
cosgrove notts nope, just OLD!!!!!
Get video.
Why the fuck shovel that in front of the door just open let train push threw
hard to watch this slow train
like watching paint dry
4ern ic8it Classic rallycar
Then change the play back speed to 1.5 or 2.
It will dry faster
Adjust expectations to match reality. works every time.
@Old Guy's Place Probably borrow one of those big snow blowers.....
hi everyone ,if anyone else is searching for get a railroad job try Tarbetti Rail Work Tutor (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got amazing results with it.
Slow
Global warming again. LOL
