  • Is this the best trail in Mt. Rainier National Park?
Join us on an exhilarating journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Mount Rainier National Park as we hike the iconic Fremont Fire Lookout Trail. Nestled amidst the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, this trail offers a blend of scenic vistas, historical significance, and unparalleled adventure.
Starting from the Sunrise Visitor Center, our adventure begins as we trek west on the Sourdough Ridge Trail towards the Frozen Lake junction, nestled in the shadow of Mount Rainier and the three Burroughs peaks. Along the way, we'll have the opportunity to reminisce about the time when watchmen stood guard over the forest, keeping a vigilant eye out for wildfires from the two-story frame cabin of Mount Fremont, built in 1934.
At the Frozen Lake junction, a trail veers off to the right, leading us uphill past the tranquil Frozen Lake, the water source for the Sunrise Visitor Center. From here, it's a 1.3-mile ascent to the lookout, ascending 481 feet. Be prepared for the exposed terrain, as there's very little shade along this stretch of the trail. Remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection to stay comfortable on the journey.
Thanks to the efforts of the Washington Trails Association, a series of steps have been built into the steep sections of the trail to prevent erosion. If you've visited before, you may notice a difference in the tread as you make your way up the trail, reflecting the ongoing efforts to preserve this natural gem.
Upon reaching the lookout, we'll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of Grand Park, Redstone Peak, Skyscraper Mountain, and Berkeley Park. Don't forget to bring binoculars, as Grand Park, the meadow to the northwest of the lookout, is a prime spot to spot mountain goats and black bears amidst its lush greenery.
Whether you're drawn by the historical significance, the stunning vistas, or the chance to encounter wildlife, the Fremont Fire Lookout Trail promises an unforgettable adventure for hikers of all levels. So, lace up your boots, grab your gear, and join us as we journey through the past and present of Mount Rainier National Park.
