Historic fun fact about that incident. It occurred while the British ambassador was speaking, and he defused the situation by waiting for Khrushchev to finish and then drily replied, "I'm waiting for the translation." Laughter all round!
Funny thing is, the shoe banging showed up in another comic of that era, the first Fantastic Four Annual from 1963. Although at least that time it was an actual Soviet delegate doing it.

Superman was pretending to be the absolutist ruler of Metropolis in order to make Earth a bad target to a looming alien invasion. Clark pretends to be appalled by the authoritaria Superman and is censored and emprisoned by dictator Superman. Later, he is the one who writes everyone about the secret benevolent plan of the Man of Steel.

I'm surprised this doesn't get adapted more. I could see a show where Superman is acting more nefarious and someone goes to the fortress to investigate, only to find Clark in some kind of suspended animation. It could be really tense and fun.
I would love an update to this story. It feels like it could even be a decent movie adaptation, with a more 'boyscout' Clark challenging a more utilitarian Snyder-esque Superman - both with good intentions, but the utilitarianism of Superman causing enormous backlash/consiquences that Superman justifies as being "worth it to save humanity", while Clark clings to his ideals of freedom, honesty and doing what is right no matter the cost, even as his allies get picked off (probably 'detained' instead of killed, but with a generous amount of injuries as Superman is trying to convince Clark's resistance buddies to stop resisting). Could even throw in some world leaders cracking down on their people in the name of "King Superman", and when Superman is reunited it being revealed that he did tell these leaders what was happening, and they were taking advantage to secure their own power. Good choice for retrospective!
I think these issues are the perfect example of why I love the silverage, the interesting covers, the randomness of red kryptonite and superman's ridiculous explanations for why he was being a jerk.
It sounds fun. I haven't read it. I don't have much Silver Age Superman, and my Golden Age is Batman and Wonder Woman. I actually would love a remake or Re-Due of this story. Wow, this came out four hours ago. I recently discovered your channel and it seems like most of the videos I watch are several years old. I looked down to see how old this one was and was surprised to find it's new. I'm not much of a comic book fan but your descriptions of the stories have been fun to watch. I admit, I don't feel like I've missed out on much by not purchasing comics. Thanks for the entertainment.
Guessing before finishing the video: It's either going to be Kryptonite messing with him, or we'll go really out there and just have him use some super-mind-wipe on everyone when the people turn on him. Edit: Okay, it wasn't as ridiculous as I thought it would be. It's something I think could be recommended to people who aren't as familiar with the Silver Age, to ease them in.
These letters be like "When Superman played Clark Kent's ribcage like a xylophone, he hits the same rib twice in succession but it produces two different notes. Are we supposed to believe this is some kind of magic xylophone? But I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder!"
This would be interesting story to update, but I think instead of doing it with the Red K splitting him in two maybe it would work better as a Elseworlds where the Gold K takes his powers and Zod or somebody rules earth instead.
Sorta feels like the "Emperor Super-Man" arc in 2016's "New Super-Man" was at least somewhat a homage to this. The 'S' on Emperor Supes' chest definitely looks like the one on King Supes' Crown at least.
I love this story, it's far and above my favorite evil superman story. The idea that Clark Kent is the one trying to stop superman works for me on multiple levels.
Since everyone else pointed out the Khrushchev reference, I'll do this one: the world leaders bringing crowns to Superman's coronation might be a reference to Revelation 4:9-11 - specifically "The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created."
@@CasuallyComics Oh no, I don't mean mercy by not talking about it anymore. I meant talking specifically about the episode! Your insight is so much fun.
Imagine Lex Luthor shouting in everyone's face "I TOLD YOU SO! Who's crazy now?!" as Superman turns dictator, proving that Lex was right all along to try to kill him.
The scenario where Superman splits into two versions of himself, specifically a good Clark and an evil Superman, seems surprisingly common. It’s interesting to think into when considering themes of Superman and his humanity. Ps: De Powered clark Kent powering through the pain of a gunshot is such a genuinely badass moment.
Hi I’ve been a big fan of your videos for some time and I recently came across a great golden age hero that I think would make for an excellent video, Madame Fatal. She debuts in Crack Comics #1 as the matronly alter ego of millionaire and actor Richard Stanton who he uses to fight crime and search for his missing daughter. It’s like Taken meets Mrs Doubtfire, and she has a parrot called Hamlet who talks in Shakespeare quotes!
What I'd really like to see is a story where a modern version of Superman encounters this Silver Age Superman, and is mortified and incensed by his condescending attitude and needlessly Byzantine schemes he resorts to, while the SA Superman thinks the modern Supes is somehow simple-minded for how trusting he is or perhaps less dedicated to his duties as Superman, pointing out his marriage to Lois as an example of both these views.
Pretending to be an evil dictator isn't surely a good thing as you think, Superman! 😬 The concepts these writers come up with didn't really think this through lol.
Banging your boot on the lecturn specifically became symbolic of authoritarianism. More than a reference to Khrushchev (someone wrote it was a “nod” to him lfmao), it was used mockingly for decades as something people do when thirsty for power.

"Banging his shoe" I died. He stole that from Kruschev.
Clark tanking a point blank gun shot is more bad ass than I was expecting to see today

The Golden Age Of Superman is way ahead of its time.
King Superman was their version of Injustice.
But this is the Silver Age, not the Golden Age
Golden Age was when Batman killed, not Superman becoming evil.
Evil Superman gave birth and inspiration to Omni-Man, Homelander and Plutonian.
King Superman walked so they could run.
And Hyperion, sometimes.

Oh, neat. Why did he do that?
