    This brings to mind the CATERPILLAR 7155 pneumatic automatic transmission from 1978, used in a few on highway trucks, and in military trucks.

    Excellent Sergei that you have been able to perform that test, it will be a boom that transmission for heavy haulers. The two speed differential deserves a video to see the differences in torque, speed and rpms. Greetings from Colombia.

    Been auto in Europe for years now. Very rare to get a manual these days would have to pay a lot extra to have one factory fitted. Volvo I Shift and Scania opticruse are both great transmission systems they are both a joy to drive . With hill hold pulling away up hill at 44 tonnes is easy both are just so smoooooth 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇸🇪🇬🇧

      Just wanted to say that the transmissions you identified are actually manual transmissions. Its just the gearchange and clutch are operated by servos controlled by the transmission ECU.
      MAN used the ZF version but it was again a manual box controlled by servos and ECUs.
      Scania's first versions were built so that the driver had to use the clutch to start and stop but all other changes were ECU driven. Caused many clutch breakages!

    Unlike what many people think, the automatic transmission, when properly used, is safer, more comfortable and more economical than the manual transmission.

      @@marciolprado1 47 years of driving manuals says they're wrong. And don't try to convince me otherwise. Seen too many trucks in runaway ramps because of automatic transmission failures.

    The second test truck that had the 2 speed rear end , did you have in low (5.6) the whole time ? Real world , closer to your truck would have been to drive it in the 4.10 setting to allow you to give a comparison to your trucks pulling power with the 18 speed standard shift

    Do they have a transmissions in Australia testing behind 4 trailer road trains where they pull huge loads every day on dirt roads in very harsh conditions

    Great video a lot of good info...also those steps on the wheels are used on soda and beer trucks all the time, so when the driver is unloading at a delivery much safer to climb to reach the product above the rear axle.

    Automatic transmissions are nice and easy to concentrate on traffic instead of shifting and killing your calf muscle.

    I hope in the next videos we are going to find out about the pros and the cons of those automatic transmissions the pricing and of course the Eaton guys will give some technical specs about this product. We need to know details and the performance of these trans and what they can do better than the conventional.

    I'm on week 3 of driving a 2018 T680 with 12 speed auto. Just general freight but made going around the DC beltway so much smoother than ye old 10 speed gear grabber ever was. Jake braking is an almost effortless system now. I can't go back to the Fred Flintstone 10 speed system now I know how the other half live.

    Hey Sergei !!! That "PETE"" is more designed for your work ?? With the 2 speed rears ,,you could gear down for US-20 in NY.. Then gear up when on the flats in Canada !! Great work on the video !! Have ""FUN"" with the rest of the day !! Bet you have reservations about your ""NEW"" KW for sure with a longer wheel base or smaller bunk to get the steps on the frame like the ""Pete"" has !!!

    I was wondering what the economical cruising speed would be at say 1500 rpm and the lower ratio rear on the B-train...The engine braking sure seemed very effective with so much weight.

    Capt: We had a Volvo EC380E excavator delivered to our jobsite (92,000 lb approx). It was brought in with a Pete 2 drives plus a booster (up). Talbert RGN trailer 3+1. NJ to NJ transport.
    When unloading the guy used the circumference of cut up tires on his ramps to protect them. They seemed pretty robust. Any thoughts on this?

    Did they explain how that transmission gets the air to operate the shift mechanism? Does it use the regular compressor under the hood? What happens in the event of an "Air Loss" situation??

      If you had low air your spring brakes would be applied so I guess you would need to change gears then I've operated equipment with air throttle and it's great because you can't rev it up until you have air pressure

      I know of you bust an air line on the old automated jobs in an intersection you are stuck in neutral. The transmission would not operate under like 80psi or so well above the point where spring brakes are applied. It doesn't take much even with a pretty massive leak to release the brakes but if you want to actually move to safety you're kinda screwed.

    Very interesting so far Captain, the W9 was a nice truck, though I liked the blue of the Peterbilt, and me thinks it won't be very long before Captain Sergei is ordering once this transmission is in proper production.

    The thing I like about that transmission it's a lot quieter than an allison that ( the big Cummins and EATON , great combo . The only thing is the fuel bill

    Сергей так какой поезд чувстуется лучше...Кеша или Петруха... думаем с боссом на перевозку воды для обьемов брать, пока таскаем в 8100 галлоных танках, но надо больше, сейчас дилема ...к какой марке прибиваться...нужен автомат, городские условия...трафик постоянный...Аллентаун Пенсильвания...сейчас на Фредах возим с автоматами...КАЙФФФ

      у Кенворта Т880 спальник получше но для дневного грузовика он не нужен. Я бы взял что-то с set back axle - для маневренности в городе, Обе марки неплохие НО у меня знакомый взял накрученный Питербильт 389 и у него в первом году было больше проблем чем у меня с Кенворт Т880. Я думаю в наше время Кенворт получше чем Пит. Также можно позвонить к обоим дилерам и спросить какая у них ставка за час работы в мастерской (shop hourly rate). У кого дешевле - там и бери ;)

      I can tell you what my KW-T880 cost back in March 2018 in Canada, but I think prices are much higher now, especially in US.

    Interesting. What button did he push at 34:34? To hold the gear?
    You said you was at 3/4 throttle when you did the start from 0. Was you not allowed to use full?
    The gearing is very low in that pete. 1600rpm, gear 18 doing 50mph. The beauty of the dual speed to change to 4.1 for highway. Your truck is 4.10 right? You was driving in 5.6, it's a shame you didn't start in 4.1 as this would be a fair comparison with your truck.
    It looks smooth and smart enough though! But 5.6 ratio makes it feel much better!
    You had a hard job. Those guys weren't for talking. I figured they would be telling you all about it, giving you the 'hard sell' - You had to ask them everything. Even when to turn!

      The button on the end of the stalk toggles between auto and manual, he switched it to manual to avoid an unnecessary downshift.

      Exactly. It has to be more gas on an automatic unless the driver of the standard does not know how to shift properly.

      @@JohnSmith-ug5ci They aren't torque converter type like an automotive automatic, so there shouldn't be any frictional losses in the driveline that come from that. It is just an automatically shifted manual transmission. If the shift programming made performance tradeoffs for fuel efficiency you could have some difference but I think it could be a net benefit to fuel consumption.

      @@JohnSmith-ug5ci Do you think that a human is smarter and faster than a computer? We are not talking about the 1980's auto transmissions, we are talking about 2021. My Volvo (Europe) does 16-18 lit/100 km that means 13-15 miles per gallon when I bobtail. Can your pickup truck catch that milleage?

      Here in Ireland.. you can have the same engine horse power, with different trucks.. like scania volvo Mercedes etc.. but all have different stopping power... thank you for your time to reply back.. keep it safe out there my friend

    i LOVE YOU ARE DOING THIS VIDEO SERGEI HOWEVER IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO REAL WORLD TESTING OF THESE AUTOMATIC GEAR BOXES i MIGHT CONSIDER PROPER MULTI COMBINATIONS UP TO 6 TRAILERS LONG TRI-AXLE/QUAD AXLE 210 FEET LONG B-TRAIN combinattion
    A 6 TRAILER B-TRAIN WOULD AVERAGE 190 FOOT CARGO
    A STANDARD 5-6 40 FOOT TRAILERS WOULD BE THE REALITY OF 200-240 FEET CARGO SPACE..
    NOTING: THAT 40 FOOT IS THE MAX TURNING RADIUS YOU HAVE ACROSS THE REALITY OF BULK OF 2 Lane flat top roads if you want foster in the reality of road train setups..
    whilst it is nice to run 53-65 foot trailers down the interstates of the world the reality you don't have road real estate to physically to support the turning radius\..
    with the axle counts you deal with in heavy haulage I am surprised you aren't running the goldhofers more often because width wise you are not really supporting the loads you are hauling
    personally if I was going to do a heavy haul application with a 2nd steer axle it be under the sleeper with a 3rd drive axle in the rear in 10x4 layout and tanks between the 2nd steer axle 3rd drive axles

    Put automatic transmission in them 'cause you can't find drivers who can drive a manual transmission.

      Plenty of people like myself that drive a manual would prefer automatic especially with the stop and go traffic that i deal with on a daily basis. Id rather preserve my knee and shoulder but you’re welcome to keep your ego if that’s all you care about.
