Making an Insulated Door for My Off Grid Log Cabin, Painting Wooden Walls Ep.14

- The first frost of the season has arrived, so I'm focusing on doors in this video. I design and make heavy doors from pine and alder. I made a 4" thick wooden frame and added Styrofoam inside, this will help keep the heat inside the log house much more effective. The temperature outside sometimes dropped to -5 degrees Celsius, so I had to work inside the log cabin. Making the herringbone pattern was much more difficult than I expected, so it took me 3 whole days.
Now that the door is installed, I can comfortably work inside the log house. Also, at the beginning of the video, I painted the walls with motor oil, this will protect the wood from weather conditions.
Sometimes I take a break to play with my dog Joy, which helps me clear my mind and get back to work with renewed energy.

I Continue to build my own log cabin (on my 2 hectares) which will later serve as a sauna, shower and a small room where I can relax while building my real big house and my farm for me and my family. Next summer I plan to start raising livestock, maybe goats, sheep, chickens and cows. Also, my goal is to learn to live a more independent life.

I just lost my husky two weeks ago to cancer and it makes me smile to see the fresh faced little one. :) I still have my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but my husky was so funny and talkative. , Nice work on that door in your log cabin.
When I started making the door from the frame with the insulation and the plywood.
That will be a nice light door, but when you covered both sides with a herringbone motif. Then I thought that it would be something to just hang the door. But you had already thought about that and learned something from your carpentry.

Maybe a lot off work, but the end result is magnificent ! It will keep the cold outside and it will be so more comfortable when you are going to use it as the Sauna.

It will help your cabin and all of your Wood projects protected for many years, but obviously you will need to continue to do this every couple of years. @@bjornbrenton Bjorn I come from Alaska but I now live in Germany where I met the love of my life but very unfortunately, my wife died from terminal cancer which goes without saying that was the saddest day of my life and very unfortunately she died before we have a chance to have children, so I am now living alone. 😔 One thing is for sure is that there is no replacement for true love, so I will continue living alone unless God has another plan for me. Perhaps, if you are ever traveling through Europe and you are coming through Germany. My door is always open. You would always be warmly welcome in my home. Incredible door Bjorn made. I've never seen those types of hinges used before.
That type of hinge used to be quite common on kitchen cabinets before the 'Euro' type took over; variations of the type are still widely used for gates and barn doors, etc. They can be a pain to hang the door but it is easier if you shorten one of the pins by 5mm or so. Then you can align the pins one at a time rather than having to get two or three lined up simultaneously.

Loved this video. Little "Joy" is a great companion. He sure is a good puppy and so quiet. I am sure he gets up to his shenanigans in the woods, when you go for a hike. When they are so young they are curious about everything. Your continued excellent workmanship and craftsmanship shows when you are making your front door. It is beautiful. It is such a great pleasure watching your progress. Thank you for sharing. Hope to see a Christmas tree set up inside closer to Christmas.
