The net needed some sort of weights (tennis balls?) on the edge so that it would spread out when thrown. Otherwise it doesn't have much chance of entangling the opponent. The gladiator reenactors I saw at a festival in Germany used cork balls on the net. Historically it was probalby lead.
Just a quick watching of this, and it was obvious that the "net" was not made correctly. In order for it to open up and "trap" the opponent, it needs to have more heft at the corners. I see others have mentioned this as well. Light weight netting with heavier edges allows it to open up when thrown. You notice that during these fights, the netting never truly opens, it is more or less a long rope/whip. Add some weights. It would work better. Perhaps head out and spend some time with some net fishers and get some throwing techniques as well!
not only that, they typically fought with tridents which would also be good for trapping blades if used adequately. This and paired with a correctly made net, would be devastating to someone who had never fought against it!
Not to mention that if the net was weighted at the edges, you could also hurl it like a bolas at the enemy's legs or arms (especially against foes wearing armor which have more edges and joints for the net to catch on) and let the weights' momentum wrap around the limb. In a best case scenario, the opponent trips, but even if they don't they're likely to need several seconds to try and free their hampered limb, which gives you an opening to use the trident's long reach and go for a gap in his defenses.
@@slowbro1337 No you got that wrong, they always had a trident and a knife. It was the net which is sometimes not shown (though that could be because it was too difficult to draw)
@@Chraan That’s not at all what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that the class is based off of posideon. God of the sea. In the colosseum the retiarius would go and try and catch the fish which would be the scissor class. In the colosseum where this battle would take place, if the retarius ended up catching the fish, the crowd would choose to either let the fish go or for it to be killed. If the recipients of the colosseum chose the latter then the retiarius would go and pull out his/her knife and stab his/her neck typically. Not whatever that thing is…
From what I’ve been able to find with my very limited knowledge is that the reptiarivs would sometimes forgo the net or discard it. Also to be clear they would have a very big shoulder guard to cover their face, and they would hold the tridens in both hands
I'm actually impressed with the katana. Why do 1000 different different punches when you can do 1 punch 1000 times. It's the same as the katana. It appears that you can use this one sword, with enough observation and practice, to defeat all sorts of shit. It's a graceful cleaver. You apply a fearless rush to it, and it's terrifying...because it's a graceful cleaver for a fearless rush.
Dual wielding is always a sus one for me. Whip or spear is enough for most cases due to extreme range, spear requires 2 hand to be efficient. As you could see, the guy are very slow and unstable, despite using fairy short staff. Shield and whip tho, I don't see why it won't work. I guess being agile is better since whip can't be used on close range?
Agreed, Long weapons require both hands for fighting leverage. The excellent spearman in the other videos uses only his spear and dominates with reach and speed.
What kind of equipment should we search for if we want to get into this kind of thing? What sort of helmet, body armor and cloves? Would kendo equipment be enough for any weapon form?
Pretty much the Hema (historical european martial arts ) protective gear is used for many martial explorations . Like the hama (historical african martial arts) , eskrima , some groups of kung fu use that gear seeking practical application for their fencing expressions , even poeple from lightsaber groups use the Hema gear . So at this point i think is for every martial art with blades.
Kid with the net hasn't got a clue. It's also a _whip,_ so can be used to attack the opponents hands, disarming them, legs, unbalancing them and face, blinding them, as well as entangling them, while they reel or back off in pain. Smh and lol.
The only issue I have with this fight is that they don't untangle his net after each kill. He had confirmed kill after confirmed kill, before the katana dude learned to fight him. Not only is this a situation where dude would have run through 7 samurai before anyone learned how to defeat him in a one on one fight, but he would have fixed his net and gotten ready before each duel. Even without fixing the net, he would have taken down a ton of katana practitioners before anyone dropped him.

I agree but in the Mediterranean we use cork floaters and pebble or ceramic ball weights. Lead sinkers are a modern thing.
Lead balls may as well be used to end them rightly
@@AggelosKyriou lead sinkers are a modern thing? Lol.
Romans literaly eat lead😂😂😂
My thoughts was to swing the net, throw it at my opponent and analyze his balance for a opening finish.
Watching this reminds me more of the rapier and cloak than the roman retiarius, (maybe because of the weapon mixture)

This channel is one of my new favorite channels! I love the pressure testing of traditional weapons that you are doing. thanks!
Found this channel last night, keep it up, these videos are awesome!
The retiarius guy could certainly improve just by watching Woody Strode in the 1960 film Spartacus as the black gladiator Draba.
Wasn't it a trident, rather than a simple spear? Tridents add a bit more ability to catch incoming weapons as well.
Sometimes was just the net with a knife or nothing but net
Kind of a weapon of the docks, use what yah got type combo
@@slowbro1337 No you got that wrong, they always had a trident and a knife. It was the net which is sometimes not shown (though that could be because it was too difficult to draw)
@@Chraan The knife was used to kill the fish (other gladiator) in the reenactment which mind you that the retarius was a fantasy gladiatorial class.
@@ShinMegamiTensei1 I am not sure what you want to say, the Retiarius is definitely not fantasy because it existed.

Wish that he used a trident and that the net has some balls.
And the proper strategy for the net is to move backwards.
He should be flicking the net not swiping it. It takes too much energy to swipe the net.
This is awsome i qould love to see an actual trident being used ,it has so many applications that a spear doesn't have
Surprising to see how effective that net is!
臨機応変の対処出来てるのがすごい!!
Wow! That looks like fun!😀🤗
No barbs? Net with soderagami or trident combo might be more effective.
Should've thrown the net like a fisherman
Hold in middle, spin the net as you cast it. The edges fly outward. Same technique as when fishing/hunting.

He jerk the net he might have disarmed the swordsman😯🤘
In order for that net to be more effective, it needs small weights at the ends.

Да не, тоже самое бы было.

Nice videó!
If only he knew more moves with that net!
Interesting an ancient Roman gladiatorial weapon against a more recent sword technique
retiarius was dope but i'm disappointed he never mixed up his attacks by actually swinging the staff.
Guy with the net does not know how to use it properly. What a shame
Cool!

A whip with a long sword or spear would be nice. This net and staff is giving me ideas.

Can you put in different colored blood to differentiate them?
I actually think double hands controlling the net could be scarier than one handing it. If they tangle their blade in the open net they're done.
What kind of equipment should we search for if we want to get into this kind of thing? What sort of helmet, body armor and cloves? Would kendo equipment be enough for any weapon form?
Each weapon has its own safety gear, I.E kendo helmet shouldn't be used against fencing.

the katana used it only for thrust, which in real combat he could not have done it. gladiators> samurai
Uh, what? Katana can thrust, wdym?
Real samurai would have also had polearms and comprehensive armor coverage unlike gladiators...
