At the Paris Opera Ballet, a dancer who is offered a surnuméraire contract is not a member of the company. The POB publishes the auditions results so it is easy to see who has won the auditions this year and has joined company.

@@ballet2558 Je suis complètement d'accord. Self-promotion and self-entitled attitude on social media is not what's going to win you POB auditions and/or respect within the company. Even though Alu and Froustey were from the École de Danse, it seems they thought that public accolades would translate into promotion.

In trying to find success in my own career (engineering, completely unrelated lol), there has been countless struggles and roadblocks. I have watched and re-watched your videos about the challenges you faced leading up the China tour you went on with the Kremlin in late 2015 so many times and was able to find the strength to keep pushing. I recently went back to school and have found so much peace going back to learning the "basics". What's more, it's given me the opportunity to keep pursuing the research I love in a way that doesn't ruin my mental health. I hope you are able to find this same peace as well. Always advocate for yourself. I wish you luck on this new adventure and God bless!

OMG Joy, what incredibly amazing news! If you are a corps member, be patient, be humble. It's not Russian ballet (the best), but it's top of the line in the West. They will soon realize what you can do. You have had such a tough journey after leaving Russia, where you were doing so well. Landing at the Paris Opera under such adverse circumstances of the last two years is a huge accomplishment.
I hated to see you at the Boston Ballet and at the Belgium wandering piece-meal company. You are so much better. But you didn't give up. My very best to you and your amazing husband, Andrew (plus your sweet little dog) in, of all places, Paris!!! I watched the Paris Opera ballet class for World Ballet Day - not for slouches. So you have landed well, in a company that favors Paris Opera students.
One thing you have, Joy, is incredible tenacity! Congratulations and the very best!

I'm a long time follower and I just wanted to say that you're an exceptionally brave and inspirational person. To go through all that you have, and then the war and having to leave Russia, finding a new home for you and your art - the combination of hurdles is something most people never experience in their lives. It takes a lot of courage to face it all, take it all, and still be able to move forward. I'm glad that you have many loving people around you, and hopefully have been able to share the emotional side as you've seen fit because it's definitely been a lot. It's more than normal to have conflicting feelings such as being grateful for a new chance and at the same time sad for all that had to be left behind. I discovered a love for ballet very late and while I can't dance myself, I'm so happy for everyone who can, and grateful that you share the art and your story with us. Wishing you all the best. 🙏

      @@ballet2558 seriously?
You are basing this because of whether or not she has her picture on their website?
The fact of the matter is that she IS dancing with POB: she is taking class, she is in rehearsals, she is performing in the Corps de Ballet.
This is especially fantastic considering that POB doesn’t take too many dancers outside of their “bubble” (i.e.: those who gone through their system of the school in Nanterre and then auditioned into the company).
This is a fantastic opportunity for any dancer, it’s obvious that Joy is thrilled to be dancing in such a storied company! and is working on adjusting her technical style to be more in line with the French style (versus her Soviet-era Russian style).
She deserves to be happy and post her joy with this!

      @@ballet2558
Before we go dumping on POB dancers who don’t make it through the traditional school/examination process, *surnuméraires* are under contract and are members of the ballet!
May I remind everyone that this is the route that Ludmila Pagliero went through to where she eventually reached the rank of *Étoile* at POB. (A South American dancer, via American Ballet Theatre, becoming Étoile at the original French Ballet company?!?? Non!)
I fail to see how a dancer *under contract* with POB is not a dancer with said company?
The elitist snobbery is right up there with the Russian-style xenophobia of not allowing non-Russians to dance in their company, especially in the first year as a company dancer, (*gasp* just like Joy experienced at the Bolshoi! and *gasp* just like Precious Adams while a student at Bolshoi Ballet Academy!)… doesn’t help that with POB being something like 95% French doesn’t help with the fear that anyone outside the “system” isn’t able to learn/dance the French technique!

Careful there, someone might actually think you have something worthwhile to say! 🤣😂🤣😂
The fact that you keep yourself so entrenched in this bitter thought process, and for what?
So you can be butt hurt because a non-French person is dancing with POB?
      Your Xenophobia is showing!
It’s good to know that non-French dancers must be young (sounds just like Hollywood… when does a dancer turn “old”, 25?) and in no way will they ever be offered a traditional company contract because you say so!
It’s so good to know that because you are a “donor”, that you have the inside track with José Martinez!
Yes like almost every country in Europe (as well as some Asian countries), I’m very much aware of the dancers in France being Civil Servants (gasp! Just like Russia!) and gasp! I’m very much aware of the current retirement age and pension fight/reform going on in France and how Louis XIV fought for this allllll the way back to 1689 (gasp I took Dance History all the way back en Lycée! and I listen to NPR with the occasional France24 or whatever else I can cobble together)
Do you know what happens when you ASSUME…??
The fact that you keep trolling any/every post (and clearly can’t bite your tongue) is really quite sad.
Now speaking of Armchair Quarterbacking (or in this case, Armchair Psychology), all of your posts have been nothing but pure projection of your internal dialogue/hatred and are in clear need of some professional help.
Hate to break it to you-it’s obvious that you are clearly hurting and for some reason, perhaps thinking that non-French people are stealing the very scare ballet spots from French dancers?
      Quite sad indeed.
Perhaps pain au chocolate will help you feel better? hmmm
      Have a nice day! 👋👋 ✌️✌️

@@ballet2558 aaah. I think you are right. I think Joy has a great story but she has manipulated the truth in the past. But still, having a chance to dance with POB...

@@crustyrash clearly @Ballet has some grudge against Joy (or is otherwise just a miserable person to begin with and wants to gatekeep) because if they had bothered to look up *surnuméraires* they would see that these Dancers are UNDER CONTRACT with POB (see Ludmila Pagliero, current Étoile with POB), even if they didn’t go through the traditional route of joining POB (and don’t have a traditional company contract).
So good to see that trolls on the YT get to determine whether what a dancer experiences is “real” or not 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Last time I checked, having a Contract with a Ballet Company means you are a member of said company and *gasp* are getting paid to take company class, rehearse, and perform with said company!

While she does have a supplemental corps contract, she is not considered part of the company. So the issue is with Joy saying that she has joined the company. Don't get me wrong her achievement her is amazing. I just wish she didn't embellish as she has done in the past.

@@Beane_the_RDWhile her experience might be real what is not real is that she is a member of the Paris Opera Ballet. Being a surnuméraire means that you work for the company for a shot period of time, not that you are part of it. Theres nothing wrong with admitting youre on a short term deal, the problem with her is she always lies about her actual status, like when she claimed to be a principal a whole year or two before being promoted
About Ludmila Pagliero, she was 20 years old when she arrived to paris as a surnuméraire and by 22 she was an actual member of the company (quadrille) Joy is already 28. Theyre situations are not comparable

Aw I love this. We are American, and my ten year old is a student at Paris Opera. She lives there. ♥️ It's such an amazing institution.
