My mum was part of the Women's land army in Hampshire during the second World War. She still has her release certificate which is framed on the wall of her care home home. We used to say about her growing up " Don't worry about mum, she's bomb proof". She will be 99 in October. Thanks for a very touching video Kirsten and Joerg.

This cottage was a lovely reminder of a world gone by. I think, as long as we preserve these ornaments and objects they will stay in our memory as a gift for future generations. You did a great job of filming it in such a detail. 😊

As always thank you Kirsten and Joerg this has to be my ultimate favourite being a lover of the forties history styles way of life and being a land girl was tough especially for girls who came from gentry backgrounds and had never gotten their hands dirty before but they all mucked in together for the greater good .A very interesting cottage and it is now on my list to go and stay with my husband daughter and two dogs .Great that Glastonbury is so dog friendly .You are both amazing advocates for tourism in the uk and some of these quaint little houses and cottages you frequent are just my cup of tea .Blessings to you both and I will look forward to your next adventure. I have been in Germany and it is also a beautiful place to visit and I hope to return again someday .❤

We should not forget but so glad that Britain and Germany are friends and close allies these days. I loved the cottage and almost could imagine the ladies of the land army shattered after a day on the land , relaxing by the fire in the cottage.

It's wonderful to see history revisited in this exact context you highlighted: two German migrants exploring history, learning new perspectives on their adoptive country and just spreading great good cheer and much forward thought-- poignant when it's acknowledged how informed these cheerful gentle souls are. In a perfect world we'd see enlightened humans with intelligent curiosity, reverence for landscape, history (and aesthetics too) just like Kirsten & Joerg all over the world. Instead, we have unpleasant grievance industries and other deeply upsetting mentalities clashing all over Europe and the West now. If all migrants could be like these two, just IMAGINE what the world would be like...

Hi Kirsten and Joerg, from Australia. My Mother was a member of the Australian Women's Land Army for the duration of WW11. It was so lovely to see your video today. It brought some lovely memories of stories told to me by my mother and her life long Australian Women's Land Army friends. Sadly now they are all no longer with us. They stayed in some rather primitive accommodation in some parts of Australia, having to stuff their mattresses with hay to keep warm at night. However there was a wonderful comradery amongst them, 0:06 which remained for their entire lives. I am the beneficiary of many letters between my Mum and Dad during this time, which have given me an insight into their thoughts and feelings of a young courting couple, separated by war, at this time. Mum gave a great description of events in the Land Army in her letters to Dad, her then boyfriend. I must confess to only reading them once after my Mum passed and then putting them back into the tin in which Mum kept them safe for all those years. (She even painted it a lovely blue covered with white daisies.) I felt it too intrusive to reread them but I feel as if I now knew a part of them unknown to me beforehand. Jusr so you know, they had a wonderfully long happy marriage together. ❤❤ So thank you again for your video today. 😊

It's wonderful that they saved a piece of history. It's humbling to think of those who went and stayed at places like this in order to help feed a nation.
The fact that women and some children, had to step up to ensure food was grown and factories were manned in order for supplies to be available. I know in the US, materials and food were constantly being sent overseas.

My nan remembers waiting out raids on Liverpool in her family's anderson shelter. Her dad didn't fight but he was very proud of his 'dig for victory' garden! On the other side, my great-aunt was a nurse and fell for an RCAF fighter pilot. She still had wartime letters and a flying badge from him some 60 years later. Wonderful to see a glimpse of what countryside life would've been like - everyone made do. Thank you!

That big grey cabinet in the kitchen was called the 'Housewife's Helper' - the shelf that pulled down into a small table was designed to make it easy to roll out pastry - that's why flour and sugar was stored just behind it, for easy access while baking. They were extremely popular from the 1940s right into the 1960s - my Mum had one - and then people got their kitchens renovated in the 1970s and 80s, and sadly, many of these old HH's ended up at the tip. I love them - forget air fryers and all the fancy kitchen gadgets of today - these old cabinets were simple, practical and rather charming.

Way back in the 70's, I remember as children, we had so similar kitchen cabinets. Only ours was made out of a thin metal. My mom loved them. As we were living in an old 2 story farmhouse that was over a hundred years old. The property was completely surrounded by corn and bean fields. The metal cabinets were a huge blessing as in the midwest winters mice always managed to find a way in. The metal cabinets kept the rodents from being able to get into the food & dishes. I remember being my mom's helper by carrying supplies and following her around the house as she "mouse proofed" various nooks and crannies lol. She'd block up a hole with steel wool, metal can lids and either nails or staple gun. But they would manage to chew through the wooden walls in another area within a couple of days.
Mom sure utilized those metal cabinets. Even had them for linens, clothes, and games.

The viewing of the WWII Tin Cottage you have most graciously made possible for viewers gives a sweet nostalgic insight into that period and makes it more real for me, a US citizen. Once again, thank you! The view of the air raid shelter was sobering yet speaks beautifully of the will of the human spirit to survive and live. You both do a wonderful job of observing with reverence the remembrance of such a challenge. On a totally lighter and different note, Kirsten, I adore your clothing. I haven't complimented yet but do so now. I love the top (?) with green and blue scallop closure! Wonderfully fun!! I would think it would have been very rare for the Land Girls to have stayed in such luxury. Many stayed in barns and places that were freezing and had no indoor plumbing. I did a lot of research about the women who served. I wrote several novels which I never published about their role during the war. One book was about the women working ont he soil, and another about the women (really girls in their late teens and early 20s) working the narrowboats bringing parts to the north and coal to the south,) and another about studying nursing at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing in London and then being sent to hospitals where the wounded from D-Day were brought. These women were heros and the country would never have survived without their service. Thank you for bringing this house to my attention. I have been to the UK 55 times but was never aware of this cottage. Jane, Philadelphia

Wow… I felt ALL kinds of emotions watching this video. Some… very sad and teary… some very quirky and playful and some made me want to flash a ☮️ and ❤sign to mankind, 😊as I am a baby boomer.
    I must say..
I Honor ALL the women, past and present, that sit in silence and do their
do diligence to help a (their) world in need,👍🏻 and Cheers to the accomplished female as Jane Austen often wrote about.
Big love and appreciation to you both!!!

It was good to see the cupboard and the Formica table reminded me of grandma`s house as a kid. There were three brass ducks on the fireplace too. The light switches, radio, telephone and hairdryer all Bakerlite it could be and was molded into anything. The blast tape on the windows a nice touch.
I spent ten years working in a care home and spent a lot of time with this generation, fascinating to talk to. Many of the ladies had been land girls or worked in spitfire factories in Birmingham. They did everything on the farm starting with milking the cows at 4.am working until it was dark. I was also told there were no stockings unless dating a Yank. So they would colour their legs with gravy browning and get a friend to try and draw a straight line down the back of the leg with mascara for the seam when going out for a Saturday night dance.

Wonderful video as always 😍 my grandad came home on leave to find the family in the Anderson shelter, buried under the rubble of their house. He dug them out and took them out of London and all the way up to Rochdale in Lancashire, not to return until the end of the war.
When we bought our first house, built in 1949, we found under the carpets Lino that was as new. Under that were beautiful pine floorboards and 1940s newspapers protecting the floor. I still have those in my memory chest.

I have the same blue crockery in my cupboard as you had your tea and cake in! The dinner plates are quite small compared to modern plates. My sister bought the set for me over 30 years ago. 💙

Kirsten und Jörg and a "Night at the Museum", lol. That was awsome guys. I can`t believe all the historic things they keep in this place. Well, the whole place is historic I guess. I wonder why the nurse`s things where still in the cottage. I wonder, what happened to her.

Interesting decor and theme for this cottage. I haven't found many of those style pots myself I love that you two are great readers as so many places give televisions I never use them when on holiday even the shortest of ones. The hoses for the shower I have used I gave up in the end head under a tap and cloth or a bath. I would never sleep in that attic ;) I have viewed a lot of old Alec Guinness films still trying to find copies makes for interesting viewing a chameleon of an actor. What a fun little cottage and step back in time thanks you two :)
