The message of this book seems to affirm the old saying: ‘Give a man a fish, and he will have food for a day; teach a man to fish, and he will have food for life.’ Handouts are usually the least effective way to help those in need.

Africa is actually richer than what most people are led to believe. While there has been no simple solution for the past many decades, It seems education has always been the underlying root towards economic prosperity. Africa is rich in resources, but how they learn to manage those resources will go a long way. Will Moyo's proposed solutions work? Only time will tell.

Awesome analysis. As A Zambian and full supporter of trade not aid, I feel that you pointing out a typo was "a good thing" this, to me, means you didn't anything wrong with the book, other than a typo.
The example Dambisa gave about the mosquito net maker, is my basic argument for why aid is not working in Africa!
Africa is not poor! It is only "poor" when others make reference to what it does not have (and not what it does have(!))
"You don't have access to high speed internet - you are poor" [Africans love to spread goods new, and very fast]
"you don't have access to financial services (credit/loans), you are poor" [The informal sector in Africa works just fine without credit scores]
"You don't have democracy, you are poor" [The African chief/traditional system is more respected today than any politician]
"You don't have access to the free market, you are poor!" [Local trade is more desirable than any capitalistic system in place. People love a good deal - especially if it is real; and not a corporatocracy gimmick].
    #TradeNotAid

I know I’m 5 years late but read when helping hurts to get a better understanding of how you can help individually. It picks up where this book lacks.

I feel like your video was kinda pointless bcz reading the index should clearly inform you it was strictly on the economic level.. not social or medical.. but I do salute you in your adventures
