  • The U.S.-China bilateral relationship is a competitive one, from economics to security, diplomacy to geopolitics, technology to the oceans and deep space. It is subject to varying degrees of tension, punctuated by intermittent cooperation and now, a resumption of selective dialogue. Each side views the other with suspicion and the policies of both are in keeping with a sense of alarm. Yet the two countries seem to agree that decoupling the two economies would be a grave mistake and that security, including technological preeminence, is essential to development, growth, leadership, and sovereignty.
Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky at 5:30 p.m. ET spoke at the National Committee’s Annual Members Program on May 21, 2024, with NCUSCR Director Amy Celico. They discussed the foundations of the U.S.-China relationship, the policy focus and goals of each side, and opportunities for greater collaboration even in the face of political sensitivities and the de-risking driving economic and trade ties.

she speak as a stateman should. but the reality is US leadership do not act as stateman, they act as politician because the nation is too polarised. if you can turn something as basic as abortion into political divide, what can you not turn into one? politician piroritise how policies will affect their reelection than what is benefiting to the state. that is why they make the decision they make. until american thinker can say boldy that it is the political system that is in trouble. US cannot resolve even domestic concern, much less attempt to deal with international concerns. I hope more attention is place on returning US politic to moderation. with a toxic political culture that tries to define their own side as "real america" and "american value", which politician would dare to speak truth that would not toe the line of either side? the inability for US to handle Israel proves how dysfunctional US leadership is at being decisive and the world watches on. this is not good for US image in the world.
