  • In this test I'm trying to determine if Starline Small Rifle Primed brass will benefit in deciding which brass direction I should take on handloading 6.5 Creedmoor

    Seems to me that this kind of testing really doesnt make much sense. Two different brands of brass will throw off data. Besides, seems to me the whole reason for SRP brass is to withstand higher pressure loads and extend brass life through primer pockets staying tight.

    The small vs large primer difference in velocity and consistency is due to the powder. Some powders need a lot of fire (larger primer) and some powders work fine with either. If anything you'll even see slightly higher velocity with some powders using small primers.

      Thank-you! I actually settled on using SRP after doing a satterlee Test. I had a good velocity increase compared to the LRP. Let me know what you think!

    Nice, Brother! You’re gonna get it shooting great, no doubts!🤠 I’m amazed at how well factory ammo shoots, once you dissect the stuff. If I loaded like that, I wouldn’t even be on paper.

    Good info. Try 44 grains of StaBall in those Lapua cases and you’ll be much happier with velocity.

    I recently bought 100 pieces of Gunwerks LRP 6.5 C brass and it too arrived bulk loaded in a zip close plastic bag. A good percentage were dinged up requiring me to work the brass before ever loading the first one. Also....I only received 99 pieces. :-I I associate Gunwerks with high end, squared away products and capabilities. To get shorted one is what I would have expected from Remington or Winchester. Dimensionally, the Gunwerks brass was very good out of the box. I've loaded some with a147 ELD M and H4350 to test but haven't gotten to the range due a knee issuse (operated on 2/26/19) and ongoing ridiculous weather conditions in my AO.
    I always refer to factory ammo, whether 'match' or not as 'one size fits none' ammo. It just goes 'bang' but one need not set expectations too high.
    Thanks for your work! ATB!

    I absolutely LOVE Starline Nickel Brass for my Creedmoor. I appreciate this video man as I have a load of Federal and small primers but haven’t loaded any. I shoot the same rifle and with Federal Factory Match off the shelf mine loves the Berger 130 loaded version. I don’t know why and haven’t had time to chrono any of it but it shoots MOA or under at 525 yards with that factory ammo. It absolutely will not shoot the 140 gr version of any factory ammo but loves my hand loaded Starline/Nosler BT 140gr with a WLR Primer. Go figure.

    I have the Savage 12 LRP, I found my rifle simply does not like Federal ammo. I tried Hornady 140 grain Match and Hornady Black. Rifle liked those pills, Match slightly better in accuracy. Both sub Moa. On calm day, 8 or 9 out of 10 at 1,000 yards on 18 inch plate, with factory ammo. I am going to lapua small primer brass when I start my reloading, better brass life and less case prep makes it worth the price in my opinion. Will start with 140 and 147 grain Hornady projectiles, will stay with what the rifle likes. Good luck with your reloading and good shooting!

    Velocity loss could be from case capacity difference between starline and federal cases

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  5 лет назад +1

      I agree. Quickload does confirm this with even .2gr difference. I did a complete Satterlee load development and found SRP to have increased velocity in the lower charges over LRP. I settled with SRP brass due to the gradual increase and lower ES numbers. Thanks for valuable input and watching!

      Velocity drop is due, mainly, to the loss of energy from the LR primer.
      Swapping from LR to SR is worth almost a grain (of varget). The benefit comes from the extra strength in the case head of SR brass. This allows higher charges with no pressure signs as mentioned in the vid.
      The accuracy benefit comes from reducing the effect of the uncontrolled element in reloading, which is the primer.

Cant wait to get into the new space. Lots of opportunity and a big workshop I hope to setup with machining tools and such.. wife wants farm animals so its a complete 180 from my last house lol. Im finding a lot less stress here and less of a rush. • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  5 лет назад

      Hi Anthony. Yes cci450. I ordered some Starline large Rifle match also to do a comparison. In my experience so far with 6.5CM my SDs and ES numbers have gotten down significantly in the singles. Regardless of huge temp swings. Im really happy with that load. However either this rifle is picky or I have yet to hit a sweet spot. More testing to come! Thanks for dropping by

    What I see here is a handloader tinkering with every aspect of this ammunition...I don't see that too much anymore, at least on the Y-Tube. The net result will be your 'learning curve' will 'sky rocket' through the ceiling. You gain years of first hand knowledge in a very short time...it also helps to develop your comprehension of the results, it takes the speculation factor out of the equation. I am very pleased to see this kind of experimenting as the knowledge you gain is invaluable. It won't be long before we start seeing just one ragged hole in these targets..."OUTSTANDING & WELL DONE!" c h a r l i e

    i get good accuracy with fgmm my box looks different .. i don't think you are using' match ammo' its inferior to fed gold medal match (its just fed gold metal) sales pitch .....Nice test I was thinking of picking up some 308 with small primer holes,, interesting that you lost fps maybe you need hotter primers. Good test lesson learned small primer less bang makes sense i guess.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  6 лет назад

      Thanks Vlad Alexander. According to Federal. There "premium" line is considered there match ammunition and is made to the same standards but offered in different projectiles. Lots of course can differ. Ya I'm intrigued on the loss of FPS though I thought these being a magnum primer (Remington 7 1/2) wouldn't matter. Im going to try CCI 450s and see how those do. The Lapua 6.5x47 cartridge is very similar to the Creedmoor and IMO surpasses in longer distance performance yet uses SRP. There flash holes are 1.5mm instead of the traditional 2mm so to use there brass will need some filing of the lee decap pin or special order. Makes me wonder if there is a hotter gas jetting effect which is causing better ignition

      Thanks for the stats i love hearing specific stats its like gunporn talk dirty to me yess use the decimals tell me the Coriolis effect parameters in a specific altitude density gr .004 ant 3479 elevation at 87 deg mmhhaaaaaaaa..... :) just kidding bro.. kinda kidding.. I would also think the Remington mag primers are hot at least just as hot as standard large primrs what have you heard that is beneficial about having 1.5 hole instead of 2mm i can imagine it the ignition hole is too small and the primers are too hot that could potentially degrade the pocket hole prematurely, with wold make the switch to small primes redundant. i have heard that 20 reloads of small pocket hole brass in 308 is the norm, but I am skeptical small pocket hole primers have been out for a long time why was the switch to smaller pocket hole brass wasn't adopted by manufacturers ?? there is probably a reason
      1 cult following standard'' specs could be one. 2 manufacturers don't want you to reload. 3 larger primers are more reliable ..4?? hope I am wrong and there is a difference. I'm sure if you can find wolf mag primers they will be hot and reliable if you find a lot somewhere I would recommend them. ps. i have some 168 and 175 fgmm ill tear them apart and tell you if i see much defense between GR... by the way :) the brass with small primer holes i was going to buy comes from a company called eagleeyeammo .com check them out , funny how it would be fitting for you and you chanal, by the way i think that's how i stumbled on to your chanal I was looking for videos about eagleeyeammo and you happen to post the review between the lee presses.. I have herd eagleeyeammo is as good as Lapua it is thicker brass so it holds less powder but it lasts forever. there is one other manufacturer besides for starling that has nice brass but I can't remember the name right know it some 3 letter abreviation ARU something along that line...

      Atlas development Group brass? ADG. Yup I heard of Eagle Eye ammo and I laughed. Can't believe the prices they are charging. 10+ reloads uh? Well that depends if the "reloader" is resizing correctly... or layman's the lack of not sizing. I sent Lapua and email to explain why they chose SRP and 1.5mm flash hole Ill share what they said once I get a response. Thanks for checking my journey out. You can really spend some coin in this art. Through many folk here and TRN i've been learning a lot
