My first memory of the hallowed turf of Portman Road is 1977 against Birmingham City. My first visit. We won 5 -2. I remember being a bit frightened at how loud it was! Been a few hundred times since. God bless Sir Bobby Robson.
Magic. Great bit of history. My family lived in Ipswich before we left for Australia in 1958. We had a fish and chip shop, and I remember my Dad riding his pushbike to the games. Those were the days...
Thank you, great video. Learnt lots more about the history of Portman Road, interesting to see how much the town changed around it in the photographs. IMO the Cobbold stand especially could do with a major rework but its just got so much history.
18th December 1993. Ipswich Town 2 Narwich City 1, Gary megson own goal in 90th minute 😂 absolutely fantastic 👏🏻 Great memories with my dad and late uncle 💙 Uppa Towen ☝🏻
Remember the ground from the 60s and early 70s. My grandpa first took me as a small boy in the 1961-62 season when they were Div 1 champions. He had a season ticket in the old Potman Rd stand and I sat on his knee if there was no free seat next to him.I remember one of the last games was against Arsenal and there were so many in the ground that small boys like myself were allowed to sit on the grass in front of the stand. Far enough from the line thankfully. Would never be allowed these days.
Great Video mate, I've been going to Portman Road since the early 70's, I remember being at that Leeds game where because of the large crowd, we young kids were all literally sat on the grass about a foot away from the corner flag !! can you imagine that today........
Thank you for sharing such a great vids... I'm Spanish and a fan of historical football, Archibald Leitch grounds and have most of books of Simon Inglis. I love your channel.
I really enjoyed your info on Portman road. Thanks very much for the detail that you put into this. I remember the old stand off Portman road which as l remember was referred to as the chicken run!
Been following Town since 1965, as a kid. You've done your homework and am impressed. Favourite moment, beating Barcelona 3-0 at home. Dunno about whippet racing though, there was greyhound racing in Ipswich at one time. Well done you.
Diggin' the new 'run out' music! I've been to PR three times; we lost the first and last times but, unexpectedly, won the second. We went up to third in L1 as a result then, bizarrely, heard on the train home that our manager, Graham Coughlan, had walked. The rest of that season was better forgotten. Anyway, PR's a good old-fashioned ground - close to the railway station and town centre. There's a great atmosphere there too. Thinking about it, it's not unlike Goodison Park. Up The Gas!
We were one of early adopters of the the "hooped" stanchion (if that is the right word) with most of the others going for a more angular stanchion or the a curved pole to the floor like Wembley Stadium. This was before the 2 or 3 poles pulling the net out of the way which almost all clubs seem to have these days.

There is no way they would allow that now.

They wouldn't allow it now these days. Thanks for watching the video.
In the 80s the police would let us in after halftime down at the Churchmans stand, bet that's stopped now.

Loved the nets in the 90’s, bit of an eyesore looking back but they were completely unique
Thanks for watching

Great video! Let me ask you: Are you from Middlesbrough? The way you say "played" makes me think so. PS: I am a Norwegian Boro fan!
I live very close to Middlesbrough
Your intro is far too long
30 seconds is too long?
