  • When you reach the very end of a game and have to defeat the final boss to order to earn the right to finish the adventure, it can be a very scary and tense time. But not all final bosses are much of a threat. In fact, some of them are utterly pathetic, and there's no way they could possibly challenge you if you've already overcome every other obstacle in the game.

      I don't feel that way about fighting say Ganon in LoZ:TP where the whole story for Link felt like one where he was **supposed** to be exceptionally prepared to win unquestionably.
      It's a fitting conclusion for one who inherited the experience and blessings of his ancestor, the Hero of Time, who could finally rest in peace after passing on his teachings. In that sense, Ganon's intimidating factor within the story is preserved, but what leads to his defeat feels appropriate.

    In tactics RPGs, when in doubt, stay just outside the boss' attacking range, then drop multiple ally units on the boss simultaneously to take it out in a single turn (or at least deal as much damage as possible).
    Almost every boss battle in Disgaea 7 boils down to this, as the map automatically ends when you kill the boss (though occasionally there's more then one boss). Pretty sure I one turn cycled every boss in that game, including the final boss. All proceeding turns was to get my units in position (or sometimes, bait the boss into position).

    Fun story, my first encounter with Fomortiis did NOT go well. When I saw he had ?? HP I thought it meant he was basically invincible until I killed all his summoned monsters. The fact that they're saying he's ridiculously powerful in universe and had a mountain of corpses around him meant I had to sacrifice some characters. Throw that in with how terrified I was of weapons breaking at the worst times, I hardly ever used the sacred ones for fear of needing them later. This was the first Fire Emblem game I played way back when I was like 10, so I thought there might be some kind of superboss afterwards. Sadly I never did get to finish this fight because my cartridge was bugged and would often reset all my data.

    4:13 You are correct, in western versions he starts off with Demon Light equipped which also gives him higher stat bonuses in addition to a ranged counter attack. Prior to this video, I'd literally never seen him use any of his other attacks, I literally just kill him before he switches lol. One of the things that makes Fomortiis such a pushover is the ability to infinitely grind the game prior to fighting him, so you can just have a bunch of max level units rolling up on a Final Boss who doesn't have an annoying gimmick to artificially raise the difficulty either.

    As for Fomortiis, one idea I had was giving him a long map with tons of monster reinforcements. That way, you have a long fight to get to him, where its not only about getting to him, but having enough uses on your weapons to beat him. This would also reward good warp and rescue staff uses.

    • @ritachikorita6916
      @ritachikorita6916 3 месяца назад +5

      That actually does happen. All Sacred Twin Weapons are only double effective against monsters (and Nidhogg is only double effective against fliers due to how effectiveness is coded) to counterbalance their incredibly high might. As a quirk, it also overrides the Bishop’s Slayer skill, making it so that Aura does slightly more damage against monsters.

So I decided to back off, thinking I had to survive a couple turns before something would happen and I'd be able to attack him properly. Nope. After a while his monster summons cornered me, then he put my most useful characters to sleep, and suddenly this boss turned into a very intense fight. Couple of my favourites died on the very last map :( Still, it did make for a more memorable experience than if I knew I just had to keep wailing him.

    The Disgaea series has made a surprising amount of one-enemy maps. Disgaea 2 and 6 even made final maps like that with pitiful results.
    I haven't played 2, but I can definitely talk about 6. Disgaea 6 is *obsessed* with one-enemy boss maps, and they're always damage sponges to make them comply to Auto Battle. The Super God Of Destruction (yes that's seriously his title) somehow decides to simplify the boss fight even more than before by being a stationary enemy. Since Disgaea has no permadeath, this reduces the fight to a consequence free numbers game. And 6's meta builds can make regular attacks more powerful than skills so even MP shortage won't be a problem.

    • @aprinnyonbreak1290
      @aprinnyonbreak1290 3 месяца назад +2

      Yeah
      6 has this really bad. I just don't talk much about 6. There's 7 disgaea games, they just skipped the number 6 for some reason, and have DD2 in there.
      I really like Bloodis and Xenolith though. (Actually I think Xenolith has some adds, so) Xenolith in particular, he has such an interesting Evility that warps the way you deal with the fight.
      Also DD2 Baal is *chef's kiss*

    • @jvts8916
      @jvts8916 3 месяца назад +2

      @@aprinnyonbreak1290 Bloodis in particular really baffles me because it shows how they could've done things for the God of Destruction- first he's fighting you at a level higher than you're expected to be with a movepool that includes powerful attacks and status effects. Next he's at a more manageable level but no longer fighting alone. Then he starts alternating.

    It's especially funny when you compare it to Blazing Blade's Boss who's basically the same, but better in (almost) every point.
    It always inflicts fixed damage, and is virtually impossible to avoid (184 Accuracy.). Instead of having tons of powerful weapons effective against it, there's only 4, all Prf weapons . They all weighs a ton, so you won't double, and are actually likely to get doubled yourself.
    Athos with Luna is your best option, but he won't survive two turns of combat.
    It is also harder in the international version, funnily enough, because effectiveness was reduced from *3 to *2

    • @alejandro_rodriguez_99
      @alejandro_rodriguez_99 3 месяца назад

    hard bosses in FE kinda don't really work tbh, because of the random nature of the player army's stats and composition
    The Black Knight (PoR) and Ashnard are "hard bosses" with big stats and they both fucking suck because if your Ike got stat screwed you can't do anything but go fuck yourself against the BK, or engage in a multiple turn long slugfest using Giffca/Tibarn with Ashnard, with basically no actual strategy involved
    To be honest, the best FE final bosses are ones that are "part of the map" so to speak, like Nemesis (3H) or Sombron (Engage), where instead of being a one-and-done setpiece that is either done in one or two hits (Fomortiis) or takes ages to whittle down as you do nothing else (Julius), the boss isn't exactly a pushover, but the real challenge is reaching him/making him vulnerable
    (You could argue that Julius counts since he's the ending of a much longer map, but the actual fight still takes way too long for something that's just clicking attack and healing up every turn before he finally dies, and you don't really feel his presence for the rest of the map the same way you do Nemesis')

    Fomortiis is also bullied by game design. At the end games, Sacred Weapons are one thing, but the twins are basically true powerhouse at that point. I found the final trial ruin is actually more difficult than Fomortiis, and finishing it before endgame gives you massive amount of experience that trivializes everything, and in my first playthrough, I made a mistake finish it first, and all of my units were level capped, including the ones I benched until then.

    I never saw him equip much less use ravager or the AOE at all because he went down so easily.
    I think when looking at FE Final Bosses we should consider the entire chapter built around it as part of the challenge. Especially when Bosses like Duma can always participate during the map just as regular enemies or when doing something on the map like defeating the bosses during the Golden Deer Route Final boss contributes in a victory... Even then though, Idounn and Formortis arent really good...
    From a gamedesign perspective I think many fe final bosses where designed around the fact that units can permanently die so this explains the ammount of good weapons in FE8 (though you will always have the lords who will force reset chapters because game overs, however most of them excluding Ephraim can grow bad). Or why many games have that one Solution like Julias Narga Book or the Falchion in Shadow Dragon (on normal and not on H5 at least).

    Not sure if it would be considered too easy of a target, but the Spider Mastermind from Ultimate Doom definitely qualifies for a pathetic final boss. When I played Doom on Xbox Live Arcade and reached her for the first time (I played Doom on the PC prior but never all the way through), imagine my shock when she was done in after 2 BFG shots. She doesn't fare much better in Doom 2 or Final Doom, either. You always either have a BFG that can 2-shot her, or there's loads of cover that make it piss easy to avoid her chaingun.
    Thankfully, Doom 2016 redeemed the Spider Mastermind and turned her into an actual proper final boss. It's still somewhat on the easy side, but you at least have to try... assuming you don't use the BFG weapon wheel glitch that melts her health bar in seconds. Dang, even in the reboot, she can't catch a break.

Yes, you technically fight him several times as a form of a final battle, but I don't see those as Phases since he goes from fighting one team, then when he loses he fights the other team, and yes, *those* battles are a bit tricky, but I'm talking about IX vs Super Sonic, the final final battle.

    Those are promoted monsters in the US version. Pretty scary if you don't know you can rush him, especially if Draco Zombies are mixed in, but survivable. And of course a non-issue if you wallop him with your hardest hitters from the word "go".
    For all the problems he caused when he was behind the scenes manipulating everything, when push comes to shove, he's not so tough. That's pretty common in Fire Emblem, now I think about it, although there have been plenty of bosses that buck that trend. (FE12 Medeus comes to mind, largely due to obscene levels of dragon spam. I've also heard a *lot* about a certain archer.)
    Incidentally, the final boss of the ROM Hack Illusory Dungeon is a reskinned Fomortiis. He's absolutely a pushover compared to the giant enemy gauntlet before him. His weapons have 0 might in that hack! But Illusory Dungeon is a Roguelike, so you could be stuck with a crappy team, and you only get one super-weapon, which doesn't get effective damage against him (though it's still pretty strong).

  • @YOSHIERIDER
    @YOSHIERIDER 3 месяца назад +4

    I would argue FE isn't about the bosses; that's at the end of a sometimes lengthy chapter; getting there is the part involving tactics and making full use of your party. Defeating the boss is only interesting if you want to do it quickly anyways.
    FE does have the unfortunate trend of making the final boss someone you can only defeat with 1 or 2 specific units, usually including the main lord. FE1 and FE 3 did it with Marth and Tiki (same for FE11 & FE12), FE4 was intended to be beaten with Julia specifically (some other units are usable, but outclassed), FE6 has Roy and Fah, FE7 is a little better - letting you use the 3 lords and Athos - FE9 makes you use Ike and the royal laguz, and FE13 makes you use Chrom and Lucina (technically not, but... c'mon). Haven't played FE2, FE14, FE15, or FE17.
    All of those bosses suck; fundamentally, Fire Emblem is about building an army, so making that entire army useless against the final boss is a terrible idea, and goes against the spirit of the franchise itself. With that in mind, I consider Fomortis to be one of the better final bosses, because you can actually use your whole army against him. It's easy, but at least they're involved. Worth noting the boss was buffed a bit in the international versions of the game; if he lives long enough, the monsters he summons are stronger. Idk if his stats are better; he's still a chump if you rush him.
    FE10 was probably the first game in the franchise to have a satisfying final boss. You have to get the finishing blow with Ike (for some reason), but otherwise you get to use your whole army, and it can't be trivialized in a single turn.

      Yeah, I always thought Idunn was deliberately easy. She isn't even a fighter to begin with, she's a factory - she exists to create war dragons, and because the Binding Blade is Super Effective against dragons, it's easy to save her.

    Yeah Fomortiis didn't account for Tower of Valni. You see this is a little misleading. It's a piece of cake when you over-level your characters, but if you play in a reasonably quick pace he's no joke. You'll have to think really hard who attacks him cause most of the cast cannot survive a retaliation.

      I like to think that max stats Fomortiis is what the fight would have been like if his soul hadn't been captured by the Sacred Stone. We're just fighting his body canonically, so it's not a surprise that it isn't as strong as it could be.

    I've pretty much never had issues fighting Fomortiis, because usually the trio of Ross, Ephraim, and Seth just full scale annihilate him with Garm, Siegmund, and Vidofnir respectively. Also Ewan with Luna in my most recent run because using the Metis' Tome on him while he was still Trainee Level 1 and leveling him all the way to 10/20/20 maxed him in every stat except HP and Defense (and he was close on both at 53HP and 17 Defense.
    Fun fact, I've never seen him use Nightmare until I saw this video. I always seemed to think there was some sort of bug that prevented him from doing so.

    If considering a noob player with less unit and that the player didn't know optimized weapon, maybe this bosses is in the end for them (to be balanced for them)?
    as much as i don't like if this is the intention, it will be crapton impossible for this kind of player to defeat the boss, otherwise the only option is resetting the game and try all over again, and this is forcing 'optimizing play' that i feel like can be shallow sometime, and have less depth if this is what the developer wanted.

    Hah, I recognize that sprite from 8-bit Theatre.
    All the FE games I've played (currently playing 3H) have the same issue where the early game is brutally hard but the late game is easy once you've gotten your troops to the peak of their strength and potential. Of course this fight would be harder if he summoned his monsters as the fight began instead of wasting a turn. You're an army that is used to fighting huge enemy armies- a single target just can't be as threatening unless you make them nearly invincible. How about a list of all the Fire Emblem Final Bosses and where they rank in difficulty?

    Sacred Stones content is always 10/10.
    Anyway, I completely agree that he's stronger than Idunn but still pathetically weak. If I had to make him stronger, I would say: Way more Hp (300?), monsters already on the map, he can attack after summoning monsters, and he can teleport across the map every so often, thiuygh I think removing his stone abaility would be for the best if he was improved so severely. Fomortiis CAN be dangerous, you just need to give him several turns to setup. It's like a really bad version of Ashera.
