- This is a 1973 Ford Escort Mk1 owned by collector John J Campion in Jacksonville, FL. It features a 1600cc four-cylinder engine by Cosworth with Edit SOHC and about 150 horsepower. It's caged, seam welded, and has a close-ratio four-speed gearbox. The Escort Mk1 was one of the most successful rally cars at the time, and this is a pristine example of the marque.

To all you internet warriors that would call this a slow POS because it doesn’t have 1000whp. This is the pure joy you miss out on of a light weight rev happy car.
Exactly. 150 hp in that light of a car is a great ratio for fun. I want one!
Kaymoney081 who tf is calling it slow this was a RACE car.... one of fords most famous rally cars. Not about joy with this car it’s about speed. in its day This was made to win rally stages. It just happens to be fun asf.
Fun fact: a 1000 hp means jack shit on its own.
even 100bhp in these feels quick.
Kaymoney081 facts. I love my little piece of shit 94 sentra. About 90 hp and 2100 lbs.
1st time I've seen our host this ecstatic
Kudos, Matt
"I get it."

And 2016, 2015, 2014 haha
New t-shirt right there lol
"How delightful"
or "I get this!"
He's so woke!
It is great to see Americans reactions to cars most of the world grew up with. These things were everywhere in Australia as well as the Ford Cortina.
Potaka79 We don’t see these car here in the USA that often I guess.
4:20 yeah! rev the shit out of it!
that's my man! great car!
I also wouldn't care if someone was reviewing the shit out of a car that isn't mine.
West Senkovec guarantee owner drives it harder. foh
"Rev the shit out of it"
*Shifts 1500rpm early*
at 4:37 he upshifts @ 8000. #sadface
This is what it should sound. ruclips.net/video/EWBOKD6fGu0/видео.html
This is one of my quickest clicks on a one take
"Take some corners!" "What corners!?" Lol!
dammit america

Time to move to the Rockies. About an hour outside of my city there's a "Winding Roads Next 99 Miles" sign.... I haven't had the chance to take my 86 yet... Can't wait.
Shouts out to the person using the high beams @4:50 for letting Matt know there was a cop ahead every1 should do this
Mike Arredondo or... Don't speed.
Martin Allen no the first option is far better.
They already knew he was there. The cops were aware they were filming, and knew they were driving fast. There's a reason they didn't get pulled over...
Everyone I agree
1 - It's not a RS 1600, it has a 2.0 SOHC 8v Pinto engine when a RS 1600 should have a Cosworth BDA Twin cam 16v engine, and a Pinto should definetly not be revved to 9500rpm!!!!
2 - it's not a real RS, it's a regular Mk1 Escort that has been turned into a rally car.
3 - it weighs much less than 2700lbs.
The guy is basically talking out of his ass.
Blue Oval Forever idk why you guys are saying a Pinto engine can’t be revved, it’s tough as nails. Do you know who Esslinger Engineering is? If not look them up, they build them. You would be surprised the capabilities of that engine.
I do know about Esslinger, but that is not an Esslinger, i personally would not rev it that hard all the time.
Blue Oval Forever it’s probably not bone stock either though. I wouldn’t keep any engine at 9k ever. But they can handle being revved hard every now and again.
thats right
Yup I followed that
Well myself 🤣
I turned one down for £60 in the 80s, I didn't think it would pass the M.O.T., so my mate bought it instead.
The next day he took it to be M.O.T'd and it only failed on a brake pipe. Later that same day it had a full M.O.T.
liverush24 my dad offered his best mate £4k for an original quarto in the late 90s (he wanted £6k iirc) ,that night he written it off drunk so lost any insurance pay out, plus his licence.
He should if taken the cash and got a taxi.
Stephen Butler Ouch!
liverush24 yea you could pick these up for £100 all MOT'd day long, or if they probably would need new sills and front floor pans about £50 shit i wish i knew then what i know now
This has gotta be one of the best one take episodes in a very long time, the only thing that held it back was the road to be honest.
Now the 'Matt gives no fucks' videos come out... that double line pass and higher speed run on a public, populated road... Love that engine. Holy crap.
While taunting cops.. lol. Also, that guy had no idea what he was talking about. Guy said it was 2700 pounds, it's actually 1700. Also he said it has a 1.6 twin cam engine which it does not. He also said it revs to 9500 which was very bad information and I'm pretty sure this caused damage to the engine when he floored it for 45 seconds.. I got a feeling he's going to make another video explaining this one.
xogmaster someone looked up the tags and found out the car does have a 1.6 soooo ur wrong
He didn't hurt the engine at all.. you could hear it bumping the limiter at more like 7500-8k. Clearly the guy in the passenger seat was misinformed.
OriginalOrigins... You missed the point of dohc vs sohc engine mate. No one argued if this car had 1.6 L displacement.
Just lookup harris performance engines, Ron was a magic man with these 1.6 ohv, pinto's etc. in the 70's and 80's they could extract great power but the cam profile meant you revved the tits of them.
Ah, man. The sound of my childhood. Watching rallying on Grandstand on the BBC. I once got to interview the great Pennti Airikkala while he drove me around the rally circuit at Silverstone in a '74 RSv1600 for a historic rally event. Just a legendary car, and a fabulous man. The sound of a high-revving I4 still gives me shivers.
such a shame that you could not get on better roads.
waste to have these cars in FL
NYC LP Player its a waste to have all of our cars here. These roads suck balls
that's the one thing i hate about this state. you need a lot of horsepower to have fun on these roads because they don't have any corners. i do enjoy driving on 345 between chiefland and cedar key though.
City road will destroy anything low here but the view at night doing the out loop of Manhattan is amazing. Drive upstate and there are some amazing roads/mts on the way to cute towns.
Mr.Farah, Please reconsider the Smoking Tire...You will never find a watch that redlines at 9500RPM and does 7000RPM floored in 5th gear.
When i was 10 a neighbor bought a used 1969 Escort 1600 Twin Cam, with Weber carburetors. He took me for rides a few times and i just fell in love with the car. Those Webers made a distinct sound as they sucked in air, and as this one is, the car was naturally noisy. Beautiful little cars, and yes they were awesome in both rally and track racing.
This has to be favourite car review I have ever watched on YT for the pure fun factor and sounds great. I was actually smiling the whole time watching this!
It's actually sad that the only place you could film these was a straight open road, they'd be so much more glorious in the twisties.
+jujitsuman68
You do realize The US has some of the best "driver's" roads in the world, right?
Welsh forestry road is its home
reminds me of my 76' Capri with the 2.8 v6 that I had all pumped up it was so much fun blowing off vettes,z's& the mighty porches. I jealous of you Matt driving that car Thanx for vid bro
Wow. One of the best One Takes to date. This got me so hyped. That Escort is bad ass.
That engine has a beautiful sound
That looked like the most amazing One Take of all time. Such a fun video!
I grew up with these cars, so much fun, the smile on their faces say all
This is the happiest I've seen you, and it was on boring roads, with gears that were wrong. Such a great video.
The Mk1 Escort is a really really good looking car. What a screamer this one is!
Amazing car, its been a while since I've watched an episode all the way to the end, this one was great.
Makes my week when Matt is that stoked on a car.
Bruv my cousin had one of these back in the early 90’s in Barbados. it had a Kent 1600cc engine with 45mm Webber side drafts! He built it himself!! Brings back memories!!!
This is not a 1.6 twin cam engine!! It's the well known single cam 2.0 ''Pinto'' engine. There's no way this engine can rev up to 9500. 8500 is possible, but with a lot of modifications and strengthening.. It's true this car originally came with the 1.6 ''BDA'' twin cam engine by Cosworth, but it's not in it anymore.
Just what I was thinking- its a SOHC Pinto. If its a real RS1600 shell its got the wrong engine in it which is a shame.
Very true its def a pinto
Ernst Jan Dekker it's not in it because it's not an RS 1600, it's an RS 2000, slower much less valuable car, people who are not in the know think the 2000 is the one to have, and that so called mechanic in the passenger seat just makes stuff up.
It could be a 1.6L pinto wich if built properly can rev to 9500 because of the shorter stroke.
1.6 pinto ? sure they mean 2.0 .... well that was a let down ... agree with Ernst 9500rpm what isit ? a 30k race engine !
A lot of times I find myself craving cars with lots of HP and big numbers...but when its all said and done, I think this might be one of the more exciting things on 4-wheels!!
I love my '72 mk1 rs2000, the sound and the way it feels. 1st Ford with rack and pinion steering I believe, rwd, light and a very rigid chassis. It isn't ultimately that quick, but it feels like you're flying! There is simply no other car like them to this today
Yep, iconic legend of a car. Would rather this than all the modern McLarens. Look at the joy on Matt's face. Says it all.
in my top 5 one take videos right here, definitely.
One of my top 5 cars right here, definitely.
I LOVE that this guy is telling Matt to beat on this vintage car. They are MEANT to be used.
With cars like these I can see how you want to call it a day
OH YES! I've been waiting for this since forever!
Another awesome classic and a ride with the Punisher! What more could you ask for!😄
1:09 - The squicking door sounds like a chicken lmao
West Senkovec that’s the clutch making that noise
West Senkovec u
Billy Colemans registration number! Millstreet County Cork, Irish Legend!
Going out in style I see, top work.
I'm going to miss this show. You've done us a great service Farah. Sure hope someone can pick up your mantle.
best one take in a while
One of my most favourite cars FUCKING EVER results in a response like this, justice! Absolutely awesome and ever since I could start driving my interest in the "power of 4" just grew and grew from first experiencing the sound of the 9000+rpm I4 SOHC/DOHC engine
The window wiper would of annoyed me. We used clip on fins to keep the wipers firmly on the window. Another wiper mod was to attach metal tubes with holes drilled in them, and have these connected to the window washer pump. Worked very well even at high speed. Loved those days. Oh to get my youth back again.
These are loved over here in Europe big following here in uk old skool ford fans us brits these are the Ford's that my name represents not the American ford as most assume you Americans think they are slow by v8 standards but these were meant to tear up rally stages and was very tail heavy and loads of fun
ThatRetroFordGuy91 You guys got a whole bunch of cool little Ford cars like that back in the day, wish we did too
A Wonderful Ford Escort All The Best To All The Team.
Sent a tingle up my spine LOVE the old rally Escorts 👌
"I stood on the floor boards for 45 seconds!" that was pretty amazing! An excellent italian tune-up, heh. But then again, in Florida, you could have it on the floorboards for 45 minutes :P
I see this car and think instantly "Scandinavian flick"......One of Fords real gems! Weight of this particular car is around 1730 Ibs and not 2700 Ibs....Just gutted i never kept one of the many i've owned... That's hindsight for you !! I could've been a millionaire !!
the fun, matt has in this beauty, is priceless.
LOL No way in hell does this car weigh 2700LBS. Not even with a cage in it. Stock these things weight just about 2000lbs. Im sorry to say, but that "engineer" really doesn't know about ford cars. These cars didn't become popular because they were cheap...smfh.
marque27 You're right, he knows nothing about the history of these cars.
You guys are so busy "being right" that you have completely failed to understand the context of these comments. Let's look at the weight first. Car was advertised by Ford as 1731lb dry curb weight. That included no cage and a different engine. I'm not saying this guy is right but he didn't say 2700lb just to piss you off.
As for them being cheap....he was clearly talking in the context of rallying FFS. And in that context they were. In 1968 they cost about 3 grand. In today's money that's about 48 grand (UK pound prices not US dollars). For a rally team that is hardly anything for a car you only need to throw a cage in.
@@ruk2023-- dude they were about £850 in 68
@@swebb302 Sure, if you wanted a bog standard Escort 0.9 litre in 1968. This is a 1973 RS1600. I can't remember where I got the price from but I did look it up because I had no idea what they cost new off the top of my head.
@@ruk2023-- It isn't an RS1600
Probably the very best "one take" yet - loved it !
Matt seemed to have the greatest time ever, and it really translates.
love how they both hype eachother up -
"Rev the shit out of it!"
"Let it clutch-slip a bit, just floor it!"
"Rally Car baby!"
"Let it whine in 3rd!"
XD Hillarious. That's just how such a car should be treated!
that guy at 4:55 flashing his light to warn that theres a cop ahead is one of the only redeeming qualities of Florida drivers , were all criminals in the sunburn state
I grew up the village of Boreham back in the 70s , about 2 miles from the Ford competition test track . We'd play in the local scrap yard and it was full of wrecked stuff left over from their rally and race development programme - like BDA and zakspeed 4 cam V6 engines . Plus old body shells from escorts like these but everything was smashed with sledgehammers before it left fords . . . .
Matt is a true car enthusiast. He can see the fun in a car without it having a million horsepower.
Goodness me this is a piece of art.
Epic little car!! I am not a Ford person, but I have ALWAYS wanted one of these!
I grew up in New Zealand with these cars ,that's a sohc lol ,we used to get Mk 1 escorts and the 2 ltr sohc out of a mk3 cortina .modify the sump around the xmember then shove it in on xflow flywheel and clutch and box as they were $20 for a escort box ,did 180 kph on a 4.1 locked diff at about 7300 rpm on a balance 40 tho over block was great fun and chewed through many stock heads due to there bad oil feeds in rockers and cam,
there were so many cheap English fords here in the 80s and early 90s due to floods of used jdm cars, every one was dumping their brit cars and getting a mazda turbo hatchs and gsr and evos ;subs;rx7 etc
Totally awesome! Proof you don't need tons of power to have fun driving. Light, high reving, good handling >+ power.
This is the most excited I've ever seen Matt besides the motorcycle swapped Honda n600
Awesome! Iv'e been waiting for this video! Escorts Rocked!
i'm so glad there's an edit in the description because not only is that now a twin cam it's not even the same engine ffs haha! 2.0 pinto ftw!!
I rode shotgun in one of those in 1976 when I was ten, driven by a rally driver friend of my mum's. I don't think I've ever been faster on city streets in any vehicle since. I'll never forget it how loud it was! Epic little monsters they are!
Raddest Escort ever! A redline that would make a Honda blush. Could benefit from tucking the wipers behind a short cowl maybe. Wish there was a few twistes on that run, but good to hear it uncorked! 👍🏼👍🏼
My wifes da had a mk2 in the late 80s, and I had a chance to get it, but I let it go. It was the most poverty spec model, with a 1300 cc engine and beige paint, but it was spotless. It was the perfect project car, and I so regret I didnt get it and modify it, even here in Ireland they have become so rare, and the mk1 is almost extinct. Amazing cars when they are sorted properly.
Car sounds really good!
Best car on TST by far! Had to watch it again!
Now I know why my dad loves this car. Awesome.
OneTake drinking game: take a shot every time Matt says "I get it", "I get this", or "this is lovely". Lol
What an awesome video and car!
That induction noise is glorious.
One of the coolest cars on the smoking tire ever
That' the mad max stuff right there love it!
Cool decals nice to see motorsport Ireland gets some attention in the US.
My friend had one of these at school (an ex rally car), they were dirt cheap back then in 1988 in the UK, it was his first car at age 17. He wished he kept it.
Kudos to that guy that flashed his lights at him to let him know that cop was up ahead.
That was so good i had to watch it twice
Loving this mini series of one takes. Just wish you could have had a tighter, twistier road!
That thing looks like barrels of fun in canyon driving, lol. That little 1.6 Cosworth reminds me of Honda's old B16B CTR motor with like that 150hp at 9500 revs or whatever. In a super light car like this that's fun for days!
This looks like so much fun!!!
My first car was a 1974 mk1 escort. Awesome cars - sideways everywhere!
Had no idea The Punisher was so into cars.
Daniel Halverson THANK YOU!
What a classic... Single overhead cam...9000 rpm... wow.
Did you seize the engine Matt...???? You looked a little worried at the end there...?
When I heard the guy say 9000 RPM for a Kent engine... it raised my Eyebrows... Cosworth engine would be OK at 9000... but even a well built Kent engine, 9000 RPM is pushing the boundary quite hard. Sounds like the owner must have a crap load of money so I guess it doesn't matter, and the guy did tell Matt to rev it out.
That guy got fired
FalconXE302 that's not a Kent engine dude, that's a pinto , Kent or overhead valve engine or it's more common name 'crossflow' has a smaller valve cover as the cam is in the block
I'm fairly sure the 1600 was a Kent... there are Kent crossflow engines also.
I've owned several of the 2 litre Pinto crossflow engines in my time... great little donks they are.
I actually did a little research before making the comment and it seemed to me that the 1600 was a Kent, and the 2 litre was the Pinto... but I stand corrected if this one is a Pinto.
Still, 9000rpm is way high for even a "built" Kent or Pinto engine.
Happy new year...!
FalconXE302 yeah I didn't word it very well,Kent crossflow in escorts available in 1.1 , 1.3 and 1.6 ( there was a pre-crossflow available before the escort was launched , you could get 1.2 and 1.5 in cortinas , the lotus twin cam was based on this I believe ) the mk1 escort only got a 2.0 ohc pinto , but the mk 2 escort also got a 1.6 pinto in the mk2 Mexico ( mk1 Mexico had a 1.6 crossflow, confused yet? lol ) the pinto was actually made in 1.3 as well, I think this was fitted to capris and cortinas and I imagine it was rubbish lol. but the one thing that I think everyone agrees on is 9500 rpm is ridiculous, plus that engine doesn't sound highly tuned enough to need those sort of revs, somebody else commented that guy probably just cleans the cars and they're probably not far wrong 😝 Happy New year to you too dude
Best 1 take yet
Some misinformation in the video but liked the hell out of it for both Matt and the other dude having such a no fucks given attitude lmao. Great one take
Yeah i love these kind of videos
I haven't seen Matt this happy on a one-take since the VFR800-swapped N600
This is one of my favorite one take cars. I *SO* wish there was corners.
Absolutely EPIC!
I guess you can imagine how much fun it was to be a teenager in UK through the 80's-90's when mk1s & mk2s were sold for next to nothing.
A good one would cost a couple hundred and a rusty MOT fail was less than £50.
The 2 liter BDG engine would be even more mental in this car. 280hp @ 9200 rpm in a car that weighs 1 ton.
Very exciting drive! Nice
In the very early part of the video, the guy behind the wheel mentioned twin cams, this is not a twin cam engine. This particular type of power plant belongs to the British designed family of Ford Kent series engines, it started in 1959 as a basic push rod single flow 4 cyl engine(intake and exhaust on the same side) and later on in 1967 evolved into a more modern cross flow single over head cam 2 valve engine, with a higher compression ratio, superior head chamber and intake and exhaust flow characteristics. These engines were heavy, they featured all cast iorn head and block and had a sturdy well built bottom end. They were basic and underpowered in Stock form, but had crazy potential to build very linear use able power and torque, once tuned and strengthened. The 2.0L version was over square in design and built torque earlier than other typical 4 cylinder engines of the day, the 1.6L engine had less torque, but the shorter connecting rods and less crankshaft throw, meant that the bottom end with competition forged connecting rods and pistons would rev to kingdom come all day long without fear of catastrophic failure. The cross flow basic cast head, could be modified to fit very large intake valves and aftermarket high duration and/or high lift performance camshafts, obscene amounts of compression ratios numbers could be thrown at these engines and if properly tuned would handle higher than normal combustion chamber temperatures and a fair bit of detonation with out blown head gaskets, add twin side draught style, high air flow carberators, and it sealled the deal, these very basic engines now turned into a force to be reckoned with. Several types of motosport activities involved many different compact ford cars running these engines, from Rallys to drag racing, circuit to auto cross, all tuned and drive train ratios tweaked, ment that Ford dominated a fair amount of motosport in the 60s and 70s.
I have personally built and raced these engines, I've seen them boosted, shooting nitrous, fuel injected or just running naturally aspirated in Stock form, as basic transportation, they are tough, robust and reliable engines that don't care if they are abused, overheated, or badly tuned they will go until the piston rings are too shot to run anymore, or a cop pulls you over for smoking up the public roads, detonating on low octane fuel all the way home. 😁
Awesome car brings back great memories
Omg. This is absolutely beautiful.
Nice video mate. Looks like you loved it.
When cars didn't need 1000Bhp to be fun , great vid, keep e'm coming
Great looking car!
How did y'all get away with this lmao!!! This was so insane hahahahaha
Great one,thks.
