  • This is a 1973 Ford Escort Mk1 owned by collector John J Campion in Jacksonville, FL. It features a 1600cc four-cylinder engine by Cosworth with Edit SOHC and about 150 horsepower. It's caged, seam welded, and has a close-ratio four-speed gearbox. The Escort Mk1 was one of the most successful rally cars at the time, and this is a pristine example of the marque.

    To all you internet warriors that would call this a slow POS because it doesn’t have 1000whp. This is the pure joy you miss out on of a light weight rev happy car.

    1 - It's not a RS 1600, it has a 2.0 SOHC 8v Pinto engine when a RS 1600 should have a Cosworth BDA Twin cam 16v engine, and a Pinto should definetly not be revved to 9500rpm!!!!
    2 - it's not a real RS, it's a regular Mk1 Escort that has been turned into a rally car.
    3 - it weighs much less than 2700lbs.
    The guy is basically talking out of his ass.

    • @iDrive4fun93

      Blue Oval Forever idk why you guys are saying a Pinto engine can’t be revved, it’s tough as nails. Do you know who Esslinger Engineering is? If not look them up, they build them. You would be surprised the capabilities of that engine.

    • @FirstOnRaceDayCapri2904

      I do know about Esslinger, but that is not an Esslinger, i personally would not rev it that hard all the time.

      Blue Oval Forever it’s probably not bone stock either though. I wouldn’t keep any engine at 9k ever. But they can handle being revved hard every now and again.

    I turned one down for £60 in the 80s, I didn't think it would pass the M.O.T., so my mate bought it instead.
    The next day he took it to be M.O.T'd and it only failed on a brake pipe. Later that same day it had a full M.O.T.

      While taunting cops.. lol. Also, that guy had no idea what he was talking about. Guy said it was 2700 pounds, it's actually 1700. Also he said it has a 1.6 twin cam engine which it does not. He also said it revs to 9500 which was very bad information and I'm pretty sure this caused damage to the engine when he floored it for 45 seconds.. I got a feeling he's going to make another video explaining this one.

I once got to interview the great Pennti Airikkala while he drove me around the rally circuit at Silverstone in a '74 RSv1600 for a historic rally event. Just a legendary car, and a fabulous man. When i was 10 a neighbor bought a used 1969 Escort 1600 Twin Cam, with Weber carburetors. He took me for rides a few times and i just fell in love with the car. Those Webers made a distinct sound as they sucked in air, and as this one is, the car was naturally noisy. Beautiful little cars, and yes they were awesome in both rally and track racing.

    This is not a 1.6 twin cam engine!! It's the well known single cam 2.0 ''Pinto'' engine. There's no way this engine can rev up to 9500. 8500 is possible, but with a lot of modifications and strengthening.. It's true this car originally came with the 1.6 ''BDA'' twin cam engine by Cosworth, but it's not in it anymore.

      You guys are so busy "being right" that you have completely failed to understand the context of these comments. Let's look at the weight first. Car was advertised by Ford as 1731lb dry curb weight. That included no cage and a different engine. I'm not saying this guy is right but he didn't say 2700lb just to piss you off.
      As for them being cheap....he was clearly talking in the context of rallying FFS. And in that context they were. In 1968 they cost about 3 grand. In today's money that's about 48 grand (UK pound prices not US dollars). For a rally team that is hardly anything for a car you only need to throw a cage in.

    I rode shotgun in one of those in 1976 when I was ten, driven by a rally driver friend of my mum's. I don't think I've ever been faster on city streets in any vehicle since. I'll never forget it how loud it was! Epic little monsters they are!

    Raddest Escort ever! A redline that would make a Honda blush. Could benefit from tucking the wipers behind a short cowl maybe. Wish there was a few twistes on that run, but good to hear it uncorked! 👍🏼👍🏼

    My wifes da had a mk2 in the late 80s, and I had a chance to get it, but I let it go. It was the most poverty spec model, with a 1300 cc engine and beige paint, but it was spotless. It was the perfect project car, and I so regret I didnt get it and modify it, even here in Ireland they have become so rare, and the mk1 is almost extinct. Amazing cars when they are sorted properly.

    That thing looks like barrels of fun in canyon driving, lol. That little 1.6 Cosworth reminds me of Honda's old B16B CTR motor with like that 150hp at 9500 revs or whatever. In a super light car like this that's fun for days!

    What a classic... Single overhead cam...9000 rpm... wow.
    Did you seize the engine Matt...???? You looked a little worried at the end there...?

    • @FalconXE302
      @FalconXE302 6 лет назад +6

      When I heard the guy say 9000 RPM for a Kent engine... it raised my Eyebrows... Cosworth engine would be OK at 9000... but even a well built Kent engine, 9000 RPM is pushing the boundary quite hard. Sounds like the owner must have a crap load of money so I guess it doesn't matter, and the guy did tell Matt to rev it out.

      FalconXE302 that's not a Kent engine dude, that's a pinto , Kent or overhead valve engine or it's more common name 'crossflow' has a smaller valve cover as the cam is in the block

    • @FalconXE302
      @FalconXE302 6 лет назад +1

      I'm fairly sure the 1600 was a Kent... there are Kent crossflow engines also.
      I've owned several of the 2 litre Pinto crossflow engines in my time... great little donks they are.
      I actually did a little research before making the comment and it seemed to me that the 1600 was a Kent, and the 2 litre was the Pinto... but I stand corrected if this one is a Pinto.
      Still, 9000rpm is way high for even a "built" Kent or Pinto engine.
      Happy new year...!

    • @lukeshytalker02
      @lukeshytalker02 6 лет назад

      FalconXE302 yeah I didn't word it very well,Kent crossflow in escorts available in 1.1 , 1.3 and 1.6 ( there was a pre-crossflow available before the escort was launched , you could get 1.2 and 1.5 in cortinas , the lotus twin cam was based on this I believe ) the mk1 escort only got a 2.0 ohc pinto , but the mk 2 escort also got a 1.6 pinto in the mk2 Mexico ( mk1 Mexico had a 1.6 crossflow, confused yet? lol ) the pinto was actually made in 1.3 as well, I think this was fitted to capris and cortinas and I imagine it was rubbish lol. but the one thing that I think everyone agrees on is 9500 rpm is ridiculous, plus that engine doesn't sound highly tuned enough to need those sort of revs, somebody else commented that guy probably just cleans the cars and they're probably not far wrong 😝 Happy New year to you too dude

    I guess you can imagine how much fun it was to be a teenager in UK through the 80's-90's when mk1s & mk2s were sold for next to nothing.
    A good one would cost a couple hundred and a rusty MOT fail was less than £50.

    The 2 liter BDG engine would be even more mental in this car. 280hp @ 9200 rpm in a car that weighs 1 ton.

    In the very early part of the video, the guy behind the wheel mentioned twin cams, this is not a twin cam engine. This particular type of power plant belongs to the British designed family of Ford Kent series engines, it started in 1959 as a basic push rod single flow 4 cyl engine(intake and exhaust on the same side) and later on in 1967 evolved into a more modern cross flow single over head cam 2 valve engine, with a higher compression ratio, superior head chamber and intake and exhaust flow characteristics. These engines were heavy, they featured all cast iorn head and block and had a sturdy well built bottom end. They were basic and underpowered in Stock form, but had crazy potential to build very linear use able power and torque, once tuned and strengthened. The 2.0L version was over square in design and built torque earlier than other typical 4 cylinder engines of the day, the 1.6L engine had less torque, but the shorter connecting rods and less crankshaft throw, meant that the bottom end with competition forged connecting rods and pistons would rev to kingdom come all day long without fear of catastrophic failure. The cross flow basic cast head, could be modified to fit very large intake valves and aftermarket high duration and/or high lift performance camshafts, obscene amounts of compression ratios numbers could be thrown at these engines and if properly tuned would handle higher than normal combustion chamber temperatures and a fair bit of detonation with out blown head gaskets, add twin side draught style, high air flow carberators, and it sealled the deal, these very basic engines now turned into a force to be reckoned with. Several types of motosport activities involved many different compact ford cars running these engines, from Rallys to drag racing, circuit to auto cross, all tuned and drive train ratios tweaked, ment that Ford dominated a fair amount of motosport in the 60s and 70s.
    I have personally built and raced these engines, I've seen them boosted, shooting nitrous, fuel injected or just running naturally aspirated in Stock form, as basic transportation, they are tough, robust and reliable engines that don't care if they are abused, overheated, or badly tuned they will go until the piston rings are too shot to run anymore, or a cop pulls you over for smoking up the public roads, detonating on low octane fuel all the way home. 😁
