As I recall this song was released the summer of 74. Waylon won a Grammy for best Country album in 1070. He won CMA Male Vocalist in 1975 .He broke out nation wide in 1976 and his Album "Wanted the Outlaws" that same year was the first Country LP to sell 1 million copies. Another great LB was 1973's "Honky Tonk Heros"

He is part of the 'Outlaw' Country. Those that were bucking the corporate take over of Nashville and the country scene. These artists wanted to do things there way, and the 'corporate' bosses wanted everyone to sound the same.
He has a lot of good songs and his duets with his equally talented wife Jessi Colter are really good too.
Best concert I ever went to was Waylon and Willie at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver. It rained on us and them and it was a soaking party!!! It was awesome!!!

Way back when, 1972 in Austin,Tx at the birthplace and date of progressive country, Michael Martin Murphy's (another country star) wife ran a second floor walkup musicians supply shop on Guadalupe (the drag) St right across from Univ Texas. It was a hangout for all the founders of Progressive Country. MMM, Willie Nelson, Rusty Wier and our man Waylon used to be there often passing time sharing music and road stories. I got to jam a bit with all of them back then. Got to be drinkin' (and ahem) buddies with most of them as well. One of the places they played often was the Armadillo World Headquarters (the actual birthplace of progressive country) an old huge open building with a beer garden outside. Many, many great memories of that music shop and the Armadillo. Many memories of clubbing in Austin or Dallas with many of them including Waylon. And great fun was had by all.

    Outlaw Country Legend. 🤠🔥✌🏼😮‍💨
Outlaw music: movement of American country music in the 1970s spearheaded by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Sometimes called progressive country, outlaw music was an attempt to escape the formulaic constraints of the Nashville Sound (simple songs, the use of studio musicians, and lush production), country’s dominant style in the 1960s. An outgrowth of the honky-tonk style pioneered by Hank Williams, it mixed folk’s introspective lyrics, rock’s rhythms, and country’s instrumentation. Like Southern rock and the country rock that developed in Los Angeles, outlaw music was a rock and roots music hybrid that had a local flavour.

My parents played music at the same tavern when I was little. i think the bar was called the Gallopin' Goose,or something like that. Waylon was sitting at the bar when my Dad sat me a few seats from him. Waylon wasnt famous at the time,so my Dad really notice him, telling the bartender to give me the dice cup so I could play with it,and a coke. He went in to see the manager of the place to let him know we had arrived and to find out who's set was first.
    Waylon was watching me throw the dice from the leather cup,and asked me if I wanted to play Horse. That was the game normally played with them. I dont know if they still play it. We played for about half an hour until my Dad came out. He got a can of beer and we left. Waylon was really nice to a little kid. I never forgot that little half an hour. :}

Waylon Jennings wanted to do his music his way. He wanted to use his own musicians in his recording sessions and control what he put in the album. He was sick of butting heads with the Nashville music establishment controlling his music So Jennings, and others, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver and others decided to make music their way. That's why and how the outlaw country music got started. Waylon Jennings was a pioneer way ahead of his time.

Pancho & Lefty Waylon and Willie Nelson classic!
The theme to the original Dukes of Hazzard tv show - He was the Narrator of the show. Line in the song " my mama doesn't understand they keep showin my hands and not my face on tv" referred to the tv show did exactly that showed his hands on his guitar but never his face.
He is one of the OG Outlaw country artists. Though he got his start in Rock n Roll. February 1959 after the band he was in finished a show, the lead singer and another's singer and Waylon were supposed to fly to next show. Another act asked if he could go, Waylon gave up his seat and in doing so saved his own life. Seat he gave up was for The Big Bopper, he was to be seated with Ritchie Valens and his band mate? None other than his best friend and musical legend Buddy Holly. 5 minutes later, they were gone plane crashed on take off... waylon struggled with survivor's guilt for years kater

  • @Gutslinger

Now you should check out Struggle Jennings "Outlaw Shit" featuring Yelawolf and Waylon Jennings.
It's a remix of Waylon Jennings' song called "Outlaw Shit." Struggle released it right before he got locked up in prison, and that was the first song that I discovered from Struggle. I've been a fan of Waylon since I was a kid, and never heard of Struggle before that. I'm 29 now.
It was weird to me, because I loved the saw and immediately saw people talking in the comment section of how he just got locked up and was going to be in there for about 5 years. I was bummed about it. Then those 5 years seemed to fly by, and I randomly rediscovered him doing "Fall in the Fall" with Jelly Roll. I was surprised to see he was already out, and shocked at his transformation.

If I remember correctly, back in the 50's Jennings and others did a rock and road show, and some was going to fly and some was going to drive to the next town show. Jennings gave his seat on the plane to Richie Valens (spelled wrong) later that night that plane crashed killing Richie and The Big Bopper.

Willie Nelson was in Austin Tx and noticed his crowd was getting more hippies and Bikers in it compared to the standard country audience of the time. So he called Waylon and told him things were different in Austin with a new younger crowd. So after a short while performing there in Austin they decided they no longer needed Nashville and their rules and contracts. Recorded and album that featured Willie Nelson Waylon Jennings Tom Paul Glazier and Jessie Colter (Waylon's Wife). It went gold fast. It was recorded in Austin in Tom Paul Glazier's Studio. Boom Outlaw country was born because Nashville considered them to be rebels against the system. Some Lady there in the office forget the name called them outlaws and the name stuck.

Outlaw country originals: Waylon, Willie, Jessie Colter (Waylon's Wife), Tom Paul Glaser, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Allen Coe, Johnny Bush (wrote Whiskey River).
Dive deep into the original outlaw music of the early to mid 70's.
Then go to the Honky Tonk sounds: Mickey Gilley, Ray Price, Faron Young, Gary Stewart, Tammy Wynette, Barbara Mandrel, Johnny Lee, and so many more.
Then, follow with the Cajon music: Isaac Peyton Sweat, Fiddlin' Frenchie Burke, Buckwheat Zydeco, and many many more.
There are so many facets to country. Those above plus bluegrass, Western Swing, the Bakersfield Sound, mainstream country, country gospel, to scratch the surface. Even a little Tejano mix with Freddie Fender and Johnny Rodriguez.

The first time i heard of Waylon Jennings was when i found out about a young kid/girl that lived in cedartown in georgia, she was only 12 years old, she took her own life and filmed it. but for the last month of her life she made videos every day, her name was Katelyn Nicole Davis, Her RUclips Name was Itz Dolly, i found out that Waylon Jennings sang a song called cedartown based on the town. if you want to see her story look for a RUclipsr called John Chrymes, he did a documentary about her, it tells her story so well. i've never been the same since i found out about her. her story is so sad its a head wrecker.

Waylon, and Cash were roommates. Definitely the same generation, and similar influences. I think the term "Outlaw" arose from doing country outside the accepted norm. I saw Waylon, in an interview, once where he said if they can use our instruments why can't we use theirs? He wasn't limited in scope. That went outside the "tradition" and made him an outlaw. In the same interview he mentioned a guitar pick... it's an amplification device so why is it allowed? I honestly relate to his way of thinking... He was just the man...

@@Roystothecoolkid This is from 1978 because two of Waylon's band members Gordon Payne and Rance Wasson who are playing electric and acoustic guitar in this video didn't join the band till 1976.

Outlaws chose to do their own songs instead of what the record companies wanted. It hurt their radio play in the beginning; but, made them legends. Waylan Jenning, Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Hank Williams Jr are some of my favorites.
