  • A pellet feeding rocket stove that runs on jelly palm nuts.
    Still a working progress with lots of room for improvement.
    see part 2 for the rest of the build.

    In addition to the interesting design idea, I have to say you are one of the few metal working youtubers who has any taste in music. That screaming heavy metal garbage that so many here in the states are fond of ruins their videos for me. Good work!

    I dont know if some day i'll build one, but i find quite pleasant see you building yours! You got a firm hand on TIG welding!

    One thing I see is, in my observation with mine, if you would block off the hole you cut in the burn tube (where you light it) it would force the air thru your fuel source to keep it burning. You're letting too much air behind the burner and not thru it. Just worth a try.

    I made a burner similar to that one for burning hardwood pellets. I used a2" square tube welded to a 4" burn tube to feed pellets into it from a large hopper that holds 60 lbs. of pellets, so it can run all day. I have it mounted thru the door of my wood furnace to heat my home and it works very well. I am surprised at how efficient it runs too. Absolutely no smoke and it can run as hot as 800 degrees if I want (I run it at 500-600 degrees to protect the steel tube however) I've heated my house with it now for the past three years and it's holding up quite well. The secret to it working so well is the design of the burner inside the tube that makes it run so well. Most videos on here show how to use a basket type burner for the pellets, but I found that they burn out the stainless rods too soon. I copied the burner design off of a Riley camp stove pellet attachment you can purchase for about $300 (way too much for what you actually get) I decided to do some experimenting on my own and it works so well, I have people that want me to make them one too! Also with my burner setup, the ashes blow fast into the stove so there is no ash build up in the tube and the ashes end up in the stoves ash pan instead of inside the tube, which can slow down the burn.

      I had always planned to make some kind of video with the stoves I built, but I'm making another stove right now (different style) so I don't have time. I'll try to get one out when I get my next one completed. I want everyone to see just how simple and easy it is to make the burn tube setup I make and how to adapt it to just about any wood stove or wood furnace.

    I think the fuel feed should be in front of the air intake, not the other way around... good progress! looking forward to the next rendition!

    Have you ever thought about making one that has a very large feed tube like say 12" x 12" to burn full size firewood? I would like to see you make one like this that would be more practical. You could call it the Little Aussie Giant. Thanks

    Very nice build video... would of enjoyed your analysis of how might improve continuous palm nuts burning...

    • @LittleAussieRockets
      @LittleAussieRockets  6 лет назад

      Douglas Pohl I think adding insulation to the combustion chamber will help and opening up the gaps in the burn plant so that the palm nuts can fall through sooner, making room for more unburnt fuel. Then I will add a secondary burn plate for those nuts so not to waste fuel. What's your thoughts.

    • @douglaspohl1827
      @douglaspohl1827 6 лет назад

      Here are my thoughts:
      1) Grate needs to be inclined (not flat) so fuel better moves across and even off as it burns - the initial fuel load should slide down covering most of the grate - steep is better.
      2) Primary grate spacing increased so fuel falls earlier onto secondary grate below not more than 2" spacing between grates
      3) Secondary grate between bars spaced for continued combustion with heat rising helping primary burn above
      4) BOTH primary and secondary grate with a shaker handle so they can be slide back-n-forth to clear debris - with rakes? maybe worth it.
      5) Ash pan below secondary grate for ash accumulation enabling many hours of burning... sliding out pan a bit allows more draft air from below.
      6) Room for heating coffee or a small fry pan and if possible think about adding an oven...
      7) Try changing the slot size for air opening after the burn with a manual piece of scrap to optimize the width or size...You want to draft primary combustion air to flow over or through your grates not all from the slot... its a 60-40 balancing act - listen to your stove burn - it is gasping or pulsing for more air.. with the slot covered draw all air from the mouth passing through the primary grate as fuel drops to secondary grate open ash pan a crack to create draw from the bottom up through secondary and secondary grates... NOW open slot a crack and balance draft air... repeat and adjust for best burn...
      Good luck!

      Wow! I'm happy I asked! Much appreciated Doug.

      You are attempting to burn palm nuts which have a shape that is not conducive to natural gravity movement... a steep grate is better... might even add a stop plate at the end of the grate? Good luck!

    That protype is interesting, but has way too much air at the burn chamber, & the gaps at base of chimney.,.hence, slowed burn, throttled “rocketing”, then snuff.

    your stoves seem to be primarily designed as cooking stoves, but how do you think they compare for heating to a pellet stove like the WiseWay gravity feed stove?

    Love your work .
    How much life do you get out of using stainless steel vs mild rhs steel . Like how many hrs use before it exfoliates to pieces ?

  • @SuperQuickfix1

    Would covering the ignition cutout help the intake air increase the burn of the nuts? More air would be drawn in under the grate helping to burn the nuts. Like a pellet stove or a forge air is applied underneath, in this case not in front of the fire.

    • @LittleAussieRockets
      @LittleAussieRockets  6 лет назад +1

      SuperQuickfix1 yes that is correct. I have been experimenting with this and with the burn plate. Still not perfect but much better. The next step is to add a secondary burn plant and a way to control the air flow from both inlets. With time and help we will crack this nut.

    At 1:25, notice the male & female SPIDERS in the square tubing marked for circular cutouts - the female must have sneaked out while he was cutting! Likely an orb/garden variety writing spider, at that size I would have imagined her hard to miss!

    That is exactly what I want to make for myself but I've never welded stainless with my everlast welder before. Is it difficult to do?

    • @LittleAussieRockets
      @LittleAussieRockets  5 лет назад

      Yes and no. The main thing with stainless steel is good gas shielding, a nice sharp Tungsten and a short ark length. Just practice. Get some scrap staino and start running fuse welds (with out filler rod) keeping a short ark length. When you start getting good colours then try with filler wire. Make sure you get comfortable when welding, that removes a lot of variables out of the equation. Have fun and wear gloves 👍
